Reflection on our Gospel Reading

From today’s Gospel reading:

...a man shall leave father and mother and be joined to his wife,

And the two shall become one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together,

No human being must separate. Reflection: While our Church’s marriage laws are meant to protect the institution of marriage for the common good, still, Jesus has taught mercy and forgiveness, and, in his ministry, he kept persons primary. How then can the Church do the same? By holding fast to its current laws and restrictions? Or, while raising up the ideal, by also ministering to those wounded by their previous experiences in marriage, who now hope to start afresh in new relationships – and still be full participants in the church.? So, we ask ourselves:

By their love and commitment to one another which married couples have witnessed to me the blessings of the sacrament of marriage?

What can I do or say to give support to those who are

struggling in their commitment to one another?

Sunday in Ordinary Time

The 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Some Musings

“May the Lord bless us all the days of our

life.”

We live in a time when things simply don’t last. We may purchase the top of the line appliance knowing full well that we’ll be replacing it within five or ten years. We buy expensive cars and know we need to buy another within two to five years. We live in a very disposable society. We throw out water bottles, plastic containers, boxes and bottles so why not spouses? Jesus, however, sets a much higher standard. “Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.” If we rely totally on our human will we are bound to fail and that’s true in whatever we do. We can forget that the graces we receive at our marriage are meant to sustain us through the difficulties that will arise throughout our married lives. We can spend a great deal of time and energy preparing for the wedding. We make sure the clothing is lovely; and well coordinated; we plan the meal carefully; we make sure the flowers are in place and the reception hall is well decorated. However, we need to spend even more time preparing for the marriage. A wedding after all, is a day, while a marriage is meant to last a lifetime. The wedding will be over in a breath leaving only memories; but the marriage? That’s meant to be a lasting and loving relationship in which both partners are loved and nourished, strengthened for the life ahead; and where children are loved and raised to be good and loving members of God’s community and the world. It’s not an easy task but then no one ever said that life was easy. Like anything that’s worthwhile having, a good marriage requires work. It means loving when loving isn’t easy; it’s sacrifice when one would rather have one’s own way; it’s staying the course when the grass looks greener on the other side of the fence. However green that grass may look, it still needs to be mowed and mowing is difficult work. I learned a long time ago that love is not a feeling – it’s a decision. We decide to love when the other makes that seem impossible; we love when it’s a time to celebrate; we love always. We continue to love our children when they’re disobedient, when they’re stubborn and cantankerous. It’s easy to love another when the other is pleasing us or returning our love but it can be quite another to love when that’s not the case. When I consider the relationship between Christ and His Church, I’m so very glad that Jesus doesn’t give up on His Bride. He’s there through thick and thin, through good times and bad, in the spring of its inception and in its aging body. We can take some good lessons from that. We know that there are marriages that should never have happened and so does our Church but that’s not true of the majority of marriages. And if we want to make our marriage successful we need to be prepared to work toward that end.

Thanksgiving Appeal As Thanksgiving weekend approaches, we are reminded of our blessings of prosperity and family, as well as our responsibilities. Every year, our parish takes up an annual collection that

raises the money needed to fund our parish locally and as part of our diocesan family. Caring for others and seeking social justice are deeply rooted in our faith: in the Gospel, Jesus directs us to help the poor, feed the hungry and clothe the naked. Together, people and parishes are united in our incredible mission to bring Christ’s light to the world. Please give as generously as you are able, and please pray for those in need.

Just as Jesus stays true to us, we need to stay true to one another. It’s a wonder to me that no matter what we’ve done, He showers us with blessings – colours of sunrise and sunset, colours of earth and sky, the scent of damp earth and pines, songs of birds and calls of beasts. He blesses His Bride with the sacraments and a community of like-minded people and stays with us until the end of the age. Wishing you a week of openness to His love and many small miracles.

Bereavement Support

“Guardian of the wounded, wrap me in your embrace. Hold me close to your heart and assure me of your love. Protect my sore spirit. Ease the pain that it holds. You are always ready to embrace me, no matter how hurt or desolate my heart may be. I will trust you with my pain. I will rest in your solace. I will take refuge in your love.” (Your Sorrow Is My Sorrow; by Joyce Rupp; Crossroad Pub.; page 147) For resources, companionship or to volunteer in this important bereavement ministry please contact Sr. Teresa at (519) 539-0876 or at [email protected]

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

“The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a restoration of the ancient practice of initiation in the Church…. Initiation into the Christian community is not concerned about programs that come and go. Rather, Christian initiation is concerned with the fundamental values of the Christian way of life. This is why the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is not a program but a sacramental process. Though we celebrate the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults during a period of one to three years, it reflects a sacramental attitude that is at the heart of all Christian living: conversion....the Spirit empowers the believer to proclaim the gift received: liberation and redemption in and through the person of Jesus, the Christ.” (The RCIA; Thomas H. Morris; Paulist Press; 2010; page 10) On Thursday, October 4th a new cycle of RCIA began. Please pray for the men and women inquiring about embracing the Catholic Faith or deepening their Sacramental commitments. To learn more please contact Fr. Dariusz or Sr. Teresa at [email protected]

Bereavement News

Holy Trinity Parish joins the families and friends who are grieving the death of loved ones. We especially remember in prayer – ** Jane Vleuten, wife of Jan; mother of Audrey, Ken, Sandra and Alida. May all who grieve the death of Jane experience comfort and peace in your faith and in shared memories. Jane was a faithful and extremely active member of our Church Family. Her volunteerism and generous spirit added greatly to our parish outreach and service of hospitality for many, many years. Rest in God’s peace, Jane.

“God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God.”
