A Gospel Reflection

Helpful hints for this week’s readings

Peace Be With You

Consider the deep peace of Christ. The shalom of God in Hebrew means more than freedom from anxiety. Shalom is the fullness of God’s blessings, joy, and satisfaction, a life without need. To have the peace of Christ is to have it all. Nothing interrupts this abundance.

You know you live in the peace of Christ when nothing can harm you. The loss of a job means God has something new to offer you. Loneliness becomes the soil of contemplation, from which new life will come. Illness becomes a means of polishing your soul to a brilliant witness. The death of a loved one is sorrow mixed with the hope of reunion in God’s reign. Compassion becomes natural, forgiveness the first response to injury. You face life with freedom, others with love, and death with confidence.

The peace of Christ comes to us in ‘angel-speak,’ words rich in meaning. We can hear these words, Peace be with you, like we do most greetings: as a salutation of little impact. Or we can receive these words in full knowledge that Christ isn’t saying hello here, but means to give something vital. The peace of Christ is our environment, as native to us as sea is to fish. We live in this peace. We breathe it in and let it out.

Catch This Spirit

I went into the house confident that I could bring some of God’s peace with me to share. The Holy Spirit was with me. Help Wanted

We are looking for volunteers to assist setting up chairs in the school hall, for the larger mass celebrations – e.g. 9:30am Sunday. Adequate numbers will allow me to create a roster to ensure volunteers availability is taken into account. It takes less than an hour to do the chair set up if there is 2-3 volunteers for each set up, and is normally done around 10:00am on Saturday. The exact time would be negotiable to ensure a more suitable time for those rostered. Joining the roster does not commit you to every Saturday. Instructions on how the chairs are set up is available, and a training session will be provided. If you wish to be part of the roster or are seeking more information please email me at [email protected] or call me on 0419 282 656. Thanks. Mike Whyte

St Philip Neri was born in Florence in 1515. His mother died when he was young and he was educated at a Dominican convent. In 1533 he went to Rome and lived as a hermit for two years, then spent a further three years studying theology and philosophy. He gave up his studies and sold his books and encouraged his friends to join him in working for the sick and visiting the churches of Rome. St Philip was ordained a priest in 1551 and he spent many

long hours hearing people’s confessions. He founded the Congregation of the Oratory, which gave its name to the musical form ‘Oratorio’, which developed from their services. St Philip was known as a happy man, who enjoyed playing the occasional practical joke, but was also regarded as a living saint by those who knew him.

Our song is the music of the Spirit Understanding the Trinity is among some of the most challenging “teachings” of our faith. Especially when we think about and talk about the “Holy Spirit.” It seems so elusive, and everyone seems to have their own interpretation and/or opinions about what the Spirit is, what it “does” in our lives, and how it acts and moves in the world.

We should really try to stop trying to “understand” it, and just simply recognize it and celebrate it as being a force that guides our hearts, and wraps our lives in care. The Holy Spirit is so many things, so why try to limit or trap its power (as if we could do that anyways)? It is light, it is the air that we breathe, it is the voice that helps us to find our voice. It gives us the music – the melodies, the rhythms and phrases that leads us on the path not only toward God, but in coming to know ourselves.

So when we pray, “come, Holy Spirit,” we pray for just that: to find light, to find the air to breathe in and out in our faith, and to open our mouths and our hearts to offer our praise. And this seeking out of the Spirit is not limited to Pentecost, Trinity Sunday or celebrations of Initiation (Baptism and Confirmation) – it is a daily exercise in finding our breath – the very breath of God working in us. A Sunday Poem and Story

Today I’m walking, with The Holy Spirit

today the road we are both going to hit.

I’ll be trusting Him, for the right directions

I’ll follow His lead without any objections.

We’ll travel together, without Him I won’t go for the righteous way

I know He knows.

I’ll be looking for Him, to steer my desires

into all that God’s will asks and requires.

Today I’m walking, with the Holy Spirit to whatever He says I’m going to commit!

A New Way of Seeing

We are too often stuck in seeing the world in only one way and forget that we can be led to different viewings. A wealthy oil baron once commissioned Picasso to paint a portrait of his wife. When the work was completed, the baron was shocked to see the image that had been created. ‘Why that looks nothing like my wife! You should have painted her the way she really is!’ Picasso took a deep breath and said, I’m not sure what that would be.’ Without hesitation, the oil baron pulled out his wallet and removed a photograph of his wife saying, ‘There, you see, this is a picture of how she really is! Picasso, bending over, looked at it and replied, ‘She is rather small and flat, isn’t she?’ The point is clear: The man was so wrapped up in HIS view of his wife he could not understand anyone else’s view of her. On the day of Pentecost there were many Jews who understood, who saw Gods new view of the world through the eye of the Spirit but there were also many there who did not, who could not see the world around them in any other way than the way it had always been.

The Irresistible Influence of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit warms us and melts our cold, cold hearts. Recently I ran across a parable that makes the point: Once upon a time there was a piece of iron, which was very strong and very hard. Many attempts had been made to break it, but all had failed.

‘I’ll master it,’ said the axe… and his blows fell heavily upon the piece of iron, but every blow only made the axe’s edge more blunt, until it finally ceased to strike and gave up in frustration.

‘Leave it to me,” said the saw… and it worked back and forth on the iron’s surface until its jagged teeth were all worn and broken. Then in despair, the saw quit trying and fell to the side.

‘Ah!” said the hammer, ‘I knew you two wouldn’t succeed. I’ll show you how to do this!’ But at the first fierce blow, off flew its head and the piece of iron remained just as before, proud and hard and unchanged. ‘Shall I try?’ asked the small soft flame. ‘Forget it,’ everyone else said. ‘What can you do? You’re too small and you have no strength.” But the small soft flame curled around the piece of iron, embraced it… and never left it until it melted under its warm irresistible influence.

There’s a sermon there somewhere. Perhaps it means that God’s way is not the way of force but love. God’s way is not to break hearts but to melt them. Perhaps it means that that is our calling – to melt hearts… under the irresistible warmth of God’s gracious

love. James W. Moore, What Do You Do With Such A Gift?
