Easter Reflection When Christians are asked the meaning of Easter, they refer to the resurrection of Jesus. It is the day for telling the wondrous story: Mary Magdalene saw the stone moved away, Peter went in and saw the wrappings on the ground, and the beloved disciple saw and believed. The faith of contemporary believers builds on their testimony. It is our festival of life, for the boldness of God’s love snatched victory from the jaws of death. Our memories and rituals unite us with that event which was so disconcerting, marvelous and liberating. Sunday after Sunday, and especially at this greatest Sunday of the year, we enter events which show Easter as more than a once-upon-a-time event. We bless and share a meal that shapes us as the Body of Christ. We sing alleluias and say the good news still takes flesh in our world. We color eggs and enjoy feasts without

need of a rational explanation. The pull to dress finely may be marred by commercialism or a drive for status, but we know our winter has passed and new life is here. In these and in so many other ethnic customs, we renew life just as we renew our baptismal commitment. More correctly, we rest in awe before the One who renews life and provides the possibility of commitment. The reading from Colossians highlights still another dimension of this day. Implicit within all these celebrations, there is a sense of future. We can be intent on “things above rather than things of earth.” Easter is a promise of the end time. Our festivals take place in a sinful world, in an imperfect Church. In them we taste that time we will all be in glory.

W e shout “Alleluia” to the Good News that the Risen Lord brings us fullness of life everlasting. In prayer, in song, in being together for our Easter Celebration, we personalize and deepen our baptismal commitment to living in faith.

We look forward to making the Easter commitment with you this year. May the Risen Lord continue to give you hope, increase your faith, and let you feel His ever-abiding love in each and every moment of your lives. All Liturgies today are being offered for you, your intentions, and those you love!

Sincerely in the Risen Lord, Father Robert J. Cedolia, Pastor Deacon David S. Miller Deacon James Mickens Sister Anna Marie Gaglia, C.S. CATHOLIC MEN’S FELLOWSHIP We are starting the Catholic Men’s Fellowship (CMF) at Holy Sepulcher. CMF offers the opportunity for men of the parish to share their faith and love for Christ as Catholic Christian men through prayer and fellowship. They gather in Christ’s presence to share experiences, strength and hope, and prayerfully support one another in an atmosphere of trust and confidentiality. Scripture readings and reflections are used for the weekly lesson plans. Then there are questions that provoke discussion in the group pertaining to those readings and to real world situations in which a man may find himself in. On Thursday, April 9 at 7:00 pm we will meet in the John Paul II room. All men are invited. Please contact Michael Eury with questions or for further details at 724-625-2885 or [email protected].

We also wish to express our heartfelt gratitude and thanks to all those who helped in any special way to make the Easter Triduum a beautiful and spiritual experience in the lives of the people of Holy Sepulcher. To the Liturgy/Arts & Environment Committee who have given their time and talents to decorate our Church, your hard work truly made our Church bright with color and the freshness of spring, symbolizing the new life of Easter. To Madlyn DeRito, our Music Director, and the Adult Choir and Music ministers, whose talent enhances the Easter Triduum; their voices and music filled our church with the glorious joy of this Sacred Season. To the Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Ushers and Altar Servers, your involvement in our worship helped make our Sacred Liturgies very special for all those who attended.

May God Bless you and your families with the many gifts of this Easter Season. With our sincere thanks and constant prayers, Father Robert J. Cedolia, Deacon David Miller Deacon James Mickens Parish Staff

FORFAMILYDISCUSSION

FUN THINGS ARE HAPPENING IN GRADES 3 & 4 The Third and Fourth grades have been enjoying studies of the Native Americans. The lessons have been taught across many areas of the curriculum. Activities included reading a novel, writing a five paragraph book report that turns into a 30 sphere, a visit from the

Carnegie Museum curator, building a life sized tee pee, and ends with a trip to the Carnegie Museum. In reading and language arts, the students read From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konings-burg. The story takes place in the Carnegie Museum of Art. Students read the book in literature circle groups to maximize comprehension. The students wrote book reports that include five paragraphs written to describe character analysis. The final report is written and built into a 30 sphere. The students loved the activity! In science and social studies, the students studied Native American tribes, lifestyles, and geographic locations. A curator from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History brought dozens of items from the museum archives for the students to study in a rotation of eight stations. The students learned about how climate, land forms, and the environment made an enormous impact on lifestyles. In math, the students learned how measurement could maximize use of natural resources during construction of Native American homes. The students built scale models of Northeastern Native American long homes. The students added details to show understanding of Native American lifestyles. We built a tee pee that is ten feet tall! The circumference, diameter, and height of the tee pee were discussed and measured in metric and standard units. In religion, the students reviewed our study of virtues and practiced team building activities while constructing the tee pee and long houses. We learned that "many hands make light work" is a philosophy with great value. Our own virtues were demonstrated as we helped each other to erect the tee pee. The students worked very well together, as they raised, secured, and covered the tee pee. The final decorations will be a drawing of a saint that we fee l touches our lives. The studies of Native Americans of North and Central America will conclude in May with a field trip to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. The students are very excited to see many of our topics displayed in real life artifacts. A writing and research project will accompany the trip as we prepare questions before our visit. Students will write answers to their questions and present the information to each other. These activities reinforce writing skills and build confidence. Our students love learning and sharing with each other.

that he preached?

1 Corinthians 5:6b-8 How do you think a small amount of yeast can affect all the

dough in bread?

John 20:1-9 Why do you think such a vivid description is given about

the burial cloths?
