Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD,

when I will raise up a righteous shoot to David.

— Jeremiah 23:5a

Question of the Week

What is it that moves me to feel a visceral form of compassion toward others? What, then, do I do?

TYPOGRAPHY

FR RUSS’ REFLECTION – 16th SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME Images of sheep and shepherds abound in our readings for this 16th Sunday in Ordinary time. Sheep, although we may want to idealize them, are basically dumb animals. No one can lead them; they have to be driven. Without a shepherd, sheep simply lie down and don’t move ahead. Without a shepherd, they can’t find their way; they can’t find pasture and food; they have no defense against those things that threaten their very lives! They need a shepherd with his rod, his staff, and his slingshot! Jesus perceives that the people have basic needs that are unmet. They NEED a shepherd! Moved with pity for them, Jesus teaches the great throng many things sufficiently interesting and engaging to keep them there dan-gerously late. Remember: they were in a lonely place! Being in a remote and lonely place far from kin and without provisions, every-one must have wondered: what’s next? (the story continues next week.)

Reflecting on God’s Word

Often we are unable to identify the truth in our lives. Is our passion love or lust? Is our financial secu-rity greed or wise preparation? Is the raising of our children good discipline or carving them into our own image and likeness? Is our religiosity superstition or faithfulness to the tradition? Do our dreams nurture the Kingdom of God or the Tower of Babel? In other words, is it from God or is it from the Other Side? So we look about us, and because our neighbors’ lives seem little different from our own, we put into any self-help harbor that seems able to shelter us from aimless drifting. Most of us, I suspect, wonder if there is anyone who knows the deepest truths, whether they be about life or about our world or even about ourselves. So we find ourselves gathering about Jesus, though even then some may do so half-heartedly—at times trusting that he will have some sort of answer and at other times wondering if he indeed does, yet not knowing where else to go. And so we gather, like sheep around a shepherd, simply because every other voice has been heard and found wanting.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — I shall gather the remnant of my flock and bring them back to their meadow (Jeremiah 23:1-6). Psalm — The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want (Psalm 23). Second Reading — In Christ Jesus you who were once far off have become near by the blood of Christ (Ephesians 2:13-18). Gospel — When Jesus saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he began to teach them many things (Mark 6:30-34).

CATHOLICISM 101 – 271 In our Gospel reading for today, the apostles have come back from the mission on which Jesus sent them and are reporting to Him the things they have done. Jesus wants them to get away for a while and get a bit of rest but it seems that is not to be. People found out where they were going and went there to see Jesus. Those people were hungry for the spiritual nourishment they knew Jesus had and they wanted it. Even though it meant an interruption of much need-ed rest, Jesus began to minister to them. How do you think the apostles felt about that? They had been on long journeys, had worked hard, needed rest and wanted a bit of “alone” time with Jesus. Jesus very clearly demonstrated to them that caring for those in need is more im-portant than rest. Needless to say, the human body does need and must get rest but we must also be willing to go the extra distance to minister to those in need. If we are truly Christ Cen-tered, we will put others in need before ourselves. Showing that we are living in real love and we are indeed, disciples of Jesus. We will have faith in our Heavenly Father to help us get the rest we need, to exercise our call to be servants and to serve without the need to be served.

FIRST THURSDAY MONTHLY DEVOTION: The Flame of Love Rosary and Divine Mercy chaplet will be prayed at Holy Rosary Catholic Church at 7PM on Thursday, August 2nd, in the church. Please come pray with us. We are praying for both the protection and safety of Memphis and the whole world. These prayers are for Pope Francis, Bishop Martin Holly, and all priests. We will pray also for both private & public schools.

Funeral Rites Workshop Ever wondered about pre-planning your funeral liturgy? Plan-ning ahead makes good sense. It's the same type of planning we've been doing all of our lives. We plan for all the important moments of our lives: marriage, buying a home, retirement… A death, whether expected or sudden, brings with it a flood of emotions. It is a challenging time to make all the decisions that need to be quickly decided upon. One of the best gifts you can give yourself and your family is to indicate your funeral liturgy preferences and desires in advance, so that your loved ones are not burdened with making arrangements in their time of grief. But, where do you start? Peace of mind is easier than you think. Join Fr. Russ on Thursday, July 26th, at 7pm in the Family Room to learn more about how pre-arrangement & estate planning can ensure that your last wishes are carried out. Fr. Russ, a Canale Funeral Home representative & an Estate Planner will answer questions covering everything you need to know about death & estate arrangements. No pressure. Just an op-portunity to learn more information about Catholic funeral plan-ning at Holy Rosary.

We hope to see you there! CALLING ALL USHERS!

If you did not receive the email regarding your meeting with Fr. Russ

please call the Parish Office.

Meeting: July 24th, 6pm, in the church.

St. Vincent DePaul Society Thanks YOU! During April/May/June the Holy Rosary SVDP made home visits to minister to 16 different fami-lies including 37 children & adults. Those in need of assistance come from all walks of life &

for many different reasons. During our visits we share God’s love by listening to our brothers/sisters concerns & needs, offer-ing prayers & providing hope for their future. Thanks to your generous donations, SVDP was able to offer assistance to these families. The assistance included help with rent and/or utilities for some, and food or medicine for oth-ers. We are currently working with many other families. Your donations to SVDP make this important outreach possible. Without your generosity, we would be unable to assist these brothers/sisters in their time of need. Thank you! We want to include an invitation to anyone who would like to participate along with us in SVDP’s mission to assist those in need in our community. Please join us for our monthly meetings in the Parish Office Conference Room at 6:30pm, on the 4th Monday of the month to learn more. Our next meeting is July 23rd & we hope to see you there!

Open Le er to the Parish #4 July 15, 2018 My Fellow Parishioners By now the pews, cushions, and kneelers have been installed. I hope you find them esthe cally beau ful and also very comfortable. Two more projects to beau fy the church: a new bap smal Font and new inside doors are in the works. More about these later as we proceed. In order to thank those who contributed to the pew part of the ini a ve we are doing or have done the following. We are working on a plaque to thank those who gave at least the cost of renova ng one pew, $1,000.00. Some didn’t want their names on the plaque, so we will honor that and have a recogni on of anonymous others who gave. We want to thank all who gave no ma er the amount. Without you we couldn’t have reached our goal. We also recognized those who worked so hard taking pews out and replacing them once they we refurbished. Because of them, we saved over $10,000.00 on the project. We honored them by placing their names in the bulle n and other social media; by giving them a special blessing at Mass; and by giving them a BBQ lunch. Thanks to all who made the pew project such a suc-cess. We have tried to improve the budget process and will be more transparent on the financial side of the parish. Look for more financial info in the bulle n, not only offertory giving but also special collec ons. We iden fied three new posi-

ons that we need, so our weekly target for giving has increased. We are also developing a new Stewardship Program. More about this very soon. In Christ, Rev. R. D. Harbaugh

Living God’s Word Admittedly, there are those times when the way of Jesus can be just as frightening to us as no wisdom at all. Yet if you seek a way that offers light, test his way. If it does become light for you, stay with it and explore yet more of it.

We recognize and support parents as the primary educators of their children in matters of faith but also acknowledge that the local church has the responsibility of ensuring the proper catechetical formation of those who desire the Church's sacraments. 4. Matrimony Please call the parish office and schedule an appointment with the pastor at least five months in advance of the proposed wedding date. Church Law as well as diocesan and parish policy require that certain guidelines be met before a wedding may be scheduled. 5. Christian Burial Please call the parish office before making funeral arrangements to confirm the availability of the church and a priest or deacon if a Funeral Mass is to be celebrated. 6. Ministry to the Sick When a family member is hospitalized, call the parish office to request prayers and to arrange for a pastoral visit. According to the "Patient Privacy Act," it is the patient's and patient's family's responsibility to provide the patient's room number if a pastoral visit is desired.

Friday is a universal day of penance: abstain from all meat.

Holy Rosary Parish Mission Statement It is the mission of the People of God gathered together under the patronage of Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary, to proclaim the Good News of Salvation and to invite others to know the Lord Jesus Christ and adopt a life of discipleship for his glory. This is accomplished by: † Calling members of the Church to the recognition that we

are a pilgrim people who are both called to the Eucharist and sent from it with the knowledge and joy that God's promises to us are being fulfilled;

† Promoting Christian Stewardship as a way of life that enlivens each disciple, regardless of age, to satisfy her or his hunger to worship God in thought, word and deed through generous gifts of time, talent and treasure;

† Inspiring the People of God to grow in their faith by offering ample age-appropriate educational opportunities based on scripture, interpersonal relationships, peace and justice, and personal improvement; and

† Seeking justice for all God's children in the proclamation of hope through concrete actions.
