A Pledge to Parish Life My parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is.
It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its community, if I invite and bring them.
It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a parish with a noble spirit, if I who make it what it is, am filled with these same things.
Therefore, with the help of God, I shall dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my parish to be.

Sharing Great Love
WE WELCOME THE COMBONI MISSIONARIES to our parish this weekend. Founded by St. Daniel Comboni in Italy in 1831 they are a community of more than 4,000 priests, brothers, sisters, and lay missionaries. They learn from the people their serve and act as a bridge between the Mission Church and our own Churches at home, sharing experiences of others cultures, languages, and traditions as well as the stories of their encounters with the poor in developing countries. They sponsor sacramental and pastoral care ministries, work to improve the quality of life for those they serve, and prepare local Christian leaders for the work of the Church.
Welcome Father Paul (Nyahanga) Otieno Sibondo, born in Kenya (1964) and ordained to the priesthood in 1995. He has a degree in philosophy and religious studies, and has served as a missionary in Egypt (1991-1995) and Uganda (1996-2010). He now works in the slums of Nairobi in Kariobangi Parish, where he witnesses to the power of the gospel to many who are deprived of their dignity and a decent living. We are blessed to have Father Paul with us. Be as generous as possible with your attention and your support for him and his community.
Also, since I will be on vacation through August 23rd, warmly welcome Father Joe Damhorst SJ next weekend and Father Dave Polek CSSR for our weekday Masses at 8:00am each day. In these last weeks of summer may we all be able to find and enjoy a little more rest and relaxation.

Those who are sick or doing rehabilitation—especially if they live alone—so often find such visits and the sacraments an important part of their healing.
OVERNIGHT ASSISTANCE IS NEEDED for our monthly Room At The Inn Program in September through November. For these 3 months one person is needed to complete the two person overnight team (7pm to 7am). If you have or can make the time, please let Joan Aslin (314-868-5574) or Sister Rose (314-868-2310) know as soon as possible.
IT’S A GOOD TIME NOW to begin inviting your family and friends to come and join you at our Fall Festival & Homecoming on Saturday, September 28th. This week and make sure they have it on their calendar. Also, start letting your neighbors know.

PREPARATION Imagine the following scene: you sit down in your school desk. The teacher walks the aisle, placing the paper before you, face down. You set your watch. You will have exactly one hour to do the test. You turn the paper over. Then it hits you: you never took any notes. You never studied or did even one assignment. For a student, lack of preparation is the nightmare of night-mares. Jesus talks about the need for preparation in to-day’s Gospel. God is pleased to give us the kingdom, Jesus says. “Gird your loins and light your lamps.” See that you are prepared. Jesus’ teaching reminds us of the question once posed to St. Francis de Sales and his companions, who, according to the story, were playing billiards. “What would you do if you knew the end of the world was coming in one hour?” The friends of Francis shared various plottings of how they would get their affairs in order. Most mentioned prayer. Francis shrugged, “I would continue doing what I am doing.” Are you ready to meet the Lord? .

WHEN TIMES GET TOUGHT GET LAUGHTER
Medical research shows that a sense of humor also helps your health, relieving tension and releasing feel-good hormones called endorphins into the bloodstream. But when life gets unfunny, humor can go into hiding just when you need it most. Here are some “time out” examples to help you relax, smile and lighten up when hard times get you down: COMEDY TO GO: Some 70 years’ worth of funny movies, sitcom seasons and stand-up comic specials are available to buy , rent or from the public li-brary. Make low-fat popcorn and let the punch lines set you free. COMEDY OF 9PAST ERRORS0. Things are fun-nier at a distance. Look through old albums and yearbooks; challenge family and friends to remem-ber what you did or didn’t get away with. PLAY A FUNNY GAME. Gather friends, neighbors, family to revisit the silliness of charades or trivia games. Write odes to your favorite things in rhyme, or recite all the bad songs you ever memorized. MAKE MUSIC. Play some “oldies but goodies” on your radio, get CD’s from the Public Library...and just sing, sing, sing. If you are alone, you won’t mind if you are off key, if you are with oth-ers….well everyone can join in the fun. In serious times, a little laughter can be a saving grace. Take the lead on one of these steps, and let a little foolishness make you feel better. Peace, S. Rose, SSND, RN Thanks so all who donated school supplies and money for supplies to Belize and Guatemala. Your gift will bring joy and smiles to many. Diana and S. Rose

someone cares, that God can be trusted, that our parish is a community and a place where anyone can find God.
Our neighbors turn to God everyday with they needs. Some have no church or practice of religion, some have given up on religion, and some are growing more religious. All who turn to God though – whether they know it or not – are men and women of faith.
We are blessed that they are with us, to be the “answer” to their prayers, the sacrament of Christ’s love.
As a parish this is what we’re all about – practicing faith and growing in faith.
Evangelization Teams focus on hospitality to those who visit our parish or receive parish services. Welcoming people confirms their sureness of God’s daily care.

"Current Events: A Blessing in Disguise?" Archbishop Robert Carlson will address this paradoxical question at the buffet dinner & lecture sponsored by 'Credo' at 6 PM, August 11, at the Rigali Center. Prosecution for declining to bake for a gay wedding; teaching 'gay-is-good' to kids in schools; the HHS Mandate. All this and much more manifests an aggressive push to enforce a new set of cultural and legal norms that pose grave threats to our religious freedom. Is there a way these challenges could prove to be a blessing in disguise? $35 registration required before Wednesday, August 7th at credostlouis.org, call 314-481-2512, or e-mail [email protected]. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
In recent weeks, we have reviewed how the Churches of East and West have enriched one another, and this Thursday’s solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was born in the Eastern Church. It is a gift from the ancient Church of Jerusalem, a commemoration of the death of Mary, and a feast charged with a deep sense of the Resurrection. Mary, the first disciple, is the first to share fully in Christ’s victory over death. In the tradition of the East, today is the “Dormition of the Theotokos,” or the “Falling Asleep of the God‑bearer.” There is no shadow of death or gloom in the theology, since this is seen as a transformation of Mary’s life into a heavenly and immortal existence. There is a sense in the tradition that she who made earth heavenly and exalted the human race by her faithfulness is glorified today. A persistent legend among Orthodox Christians tells how all the disciples, except Thomas, who was preaching in India, were present at Mary’s death and burial, and sat by the tomb for three days. On the third day, Thomas saw Mary’s body rising to heaven. She greeted him as “my friend,” and he was escorted by angels to proclaim her assumption to the others, who then realized her tomb was empty. Thus Thomas, the one who expressed doubt at the resurrection of Christ, received a gift from Mary: the chance to proclaim resurrection faith to the disciples.
