The Annual Financial Report (subject to Martin Wakefield Accountants Review) tabled at the AGM on Sunday disclosed a net surplus of $43,200. The latter will now impact on the current year results. Holy Family Parish Luncheon: Sunday 17 July, at Seven Oaks. From Fr Brian:

About 50 parishioners attended the Holy Family Parish AGM last Sunday. During the Meeting parishioners went into groups to discuss three practical

questions: “What practical things could we do, or ask, or help:

1 Non- practicing Catholics return to the Church ?

2 How is the Holy Family Parish going ?

3 What Adult Education Session topics would you like for next

year ?”

The response from the Groups were reported back to the Meeting. These responses will provide the Pastoral Council with material to discuss. Reports from Parish Groups will be presented in the newsletter over the forthcoming weeks.

The Annual Financial Report (subject to Martin Wakefield Accountants Review) tabled at the AGM on Sunday disclosed a net surplus of $43,200. This very comfortable result was mainly due to the receipt of two $5,000 general purpose bequests, and delays in carrying-out budgeted repairs and maintenance in the basilica and the Sacred Heart presbytery. The latter will now impact on the current year results.

Holy Family Parish Luncheon:

Sunday 17 July, at Seven Oaks. Tickets cost $33.00 and available after Masses this Sunday, or at the Parish Office during week between 9—12. If you would like to donate something towards a raffle it would be greatly appreciated. Proceeds to Liturgical supplies for Holy Family Parish. A good social catch up for all parishioners and good entertainment has been arranged.

“The Salvation Army” invites parishioners of Holy Family Parish, and the other Churches of Timaru, to join them in a celebration of the life of the Booths – the founding Family of the Salvation Army: at the Salvation Army Hall, corner Otipua & Wai-iti Roads, this Sunday 3 July 2.30pm. This year is the 151

st anniversary of the beginnings of the Salvation Army. The Afternoon

will involve Readings from the Booths and music provided by a brass sextet from Christchurch, plus afternoon tea. It would be good to see a few parishioners at this afternoon to support the Sallies in Timaru.

Over the next couple of weekends, Fr Anton McLean will be supplying weekend masses while Fr Joaquin is on his Annual Holidays.

Beginning this Wednesday, 6 July, and the subsequent six Wednesdays, at 1.30pm, in the Sacred Heart Presbytery these DVDs will be repeated. The Sessions are all independent – so it doesn’t matter if people miss a session. The DVDs provide a very good discussion on significant Catholic teachings. (There will not be a session on 13 July – as it is the ‘Friendly Afternoon’ at St Thomas’ church).

Voice for the Family – have published a booklet, entitled: “Euthanasia: an examination of euthanasia and assisted suicide and their implications”. Cost $15. There is a copy in the Parish Office for anyone who may wish to view the booklet. Orders may also be made at the Parish Office. This booklet is a thoughtful, practical and pastorally sensitive resource that provides a clear and thorough commentary on the ethical issues of euthanasia and assisted suicide. This booklet is a good resource to provide positive

answers to this debate that has been introduced into NZ.

Year of Mercy Ecumenical Service: is now Sunday 7 August, 2.00pm, in Sacred Heart Basilica. The Main-Line Christian Churches are being invited to share with the Catholic Community the Year of Mercy. Parishioners are encouraged to come and join in this Ecumenical Venture for the Year of Mercy. There will be a cuppa in the Sacred Heart Centre after the Service. If you have friends in the other Christian Churches – then invite them to accompany you to the Service.

Some parishioners at St Thomas’ may have noticed the new chairs, with arm rests, at the back of the church; they also have a firm seat. These chairs may be suitable for parishioners who need a higher chair. They are worth $414 each – a small fortune.

At a recent funeral, a friend of the bereaved family came up to me to say how they appreciated the Funeral Mass, but then added that because they were divorced and remarried – then they were unable to have Catholic Funeral Mass. This is RUBBISH. It surprised me that after 50 years since the Second Vatican Council some people still think that the Church has no compassion or mercy. Being divorced is not a problem in sharing in the full life of the Church; however, there is a difficulty if the person, who had a Sacramental Marriage, then wishes to get remarried. The person needs an annulment. The process of investigating the nullity of the marriage now has no financial cost. It is important to appreciate that a Catholic is not prevented from having a Catholic Funeral Mass because of their personal situation. As I have said before, non-Catholic members of the family can also have a Funeral Mass or a Catholic Funeral Service. It is a pity that negative interpretations still persist. I hope the Year of Mercy will assist Catholics in seeing the Church as a haven of God’s love.

Handyman, with a plane, is required to plane a fraction off the second drawer of the vestment press at St Thomas. The drawer gets stuck, which prevent good care of the books that are kept in the drawer.
