ENRICHMENT CLASS
Holsworthy High School has an Enrichment class in Year 7 and Year 8 to cater to the needs of talented students. Talented students are those whose skills are dis nctly above average in one or more key learning area.
Research tells us that capable students can benefit greatly from working with others of similar ability. Not only do students have the opportunity to work with students of similar ability, they also enjoy challenging and more complex work. Teachers have developed programs that incorporate both accelerated and enriched learning.
Posi ons in the Year 7 Enrichment Class are dependent on student performance in literacy, numeracy and wri ng skills. Student primary school scores are reviewed in conjunc on with the results from this test for eligibility. Students who do not gain immediate first round entry may be put on a wai ng list for placement. Parents may choose to provide addi onal informa on about their child’s achievement, including test results from other schools and their primary school por olio. Students must be enrolled at Holsworthy High School for Year 7 the following year to be considered for this class.
The Enrichment Class will con nue in Year 8 in a combina on of English, Science, PDHPE, History and Geography. Mathema cs is metabled on a separate line and is graded according to individual academic achievement in Year 7. From Year 9 the core subjects are graded according to student achievement.
Posi ons in the Enrichment Class are reviewed at the end of each semester.
Please refer to the enrichment policy found on the school’s website. h p://www.holsworthy‐h.schools.nsw.edu.au/curriculum‐ac vi es/learning‐extension

STUDENT SERVICES AND FACILITIES
Learning Centre The study area provides an opportunity for teachers to extend class work with enrichment ac vi es, individually or in small groups. The area also includes the senior study, which is used by senior classes as a study area when they do not have metabled lessons.
The Library is incorporated into the Learning Centre and is open to all students before school, at morning recess and lunch me. Students are welcome to use the library for research, homework, reading magazines or for general interest reading.
Students in Years 7‐10 may borrow up to four books for a two‐week period. Year 7 are given orienta on lessons at the start of the year and shown how to use our computerised catalogue.
Defence Transi on Mentor Mrs Carr is employed as a Defence Transi on Mentor. She is part of the school’s student support team and her role is to assist students during the transi on periods of reloca on for defence families. Students may approach Mrs Carr directly or parents may make an appointment. Her office is located in the Learning Centre.
Counselling School Counsellors are appointed to schools to provide counselling, assessment, advice or referral to outside agencies for students and parents regarding educa onal, social and personal support.
There is a counsellor on site three days per week. Students can see the counsellor to make an appointment and parents can make contact by telephone and / or make an appointment through the School Office.
Sickness and First Aid Students who suffer illness or minor injury during the course of the school day should inform their teacher and will be given whatever first aid is necessary.
As facili es for trea ng sick children are limited, please do not send children who are exhibi ng signs of illness to school. Whilst the school has several members of staff with a First Aid Cer ficate we do not have a resident nursing sister and consequently only minor first aid can be given. For more serious injuries the ambulance will be called and students taken to hospital. Where necessary and where possible, parents are contacted in cases of serious sickness or injury.

ATTENDANCE
SMS – No fica on of Absence or Lateness When a student is absent or late the school will send a text message to a parent’s mobile (to mother by default unless otherwise requested). A reply by text to the school with explana on can be sent in lieu of sending a note when the student returns to school.
Parents must complete an Extended Overseas Leave / Travel form and submit to the Office prior to departure when planning overseas travel for their child
Lateness Students arriving late to school during Roll Call must report to Late Roll Call in the Library. Students arriving a er 8.50 am need to sign in electronically at the Front Office. Students should have a note explaining their lateness. Please mark note with Year and Roll Call number.
Absence Notes When students are absent parents need to inform the school of the absence and the reason for it. This can be done by bringing an explana on note to the Front Office on the day the student returns to school, by phoning the school on the day of absence or sending a return text upon receiving sms no fica on. Notes must be signed by a parent/guardian and preferably wri en by them. Parents/Guardians will be informed should unacceptable absences become apparent.
Early Leave Pass Any student (Years 7‐12) who is required to leave the school grounds before the normal finishing me needs to bring a note (signed by parent or
guardian). The note is to be shown to their teacher enabling them to leave class early, go to the Front Office and sign out electronically before they leave school grounds. An early leave pass will be issued when they sign out.
Leaving the School Grounds:
No student is permi ed to leave the school premises during the day without permission. This includes senior students accessing their cars.
Senior Students Senior students are expected to spend any study period lessons in the Learning Centre / Library.
Year 12 students do not a end roll call but instead sign in at the Administra on Block. Senior students are permi ed to arrive for their first metabled lesson of each day. Students can leave at the comple on of their last metabled lesson for the day or at the end of
period 4, whichever is later. Alterna vely, students can elect to stay at school and complete independent study in the Library or Learning Centre.
School grounds must be secure and safe for students despite various areas being available for use by vehicles.
Due to pedestrian safety and traffic conges on issues, parents are asked to refrain from driving onto the school grounds unless they have official business ie. An appointment with staff. The staff carpark is for the use of staff and delivery vehicles only and not for use by parents and students to drop off and pick up children.
Parents are encouraged to use the appropriate areas out the front of the school when needed. We would like to thank the majority of families who take care to behave responsibly and park in safe and appropriate loca ons outside the school.
Students are required to have a sa sfactory record of a endance and punctuality at school across all years. The NSW Educa on Standards Authority considers that 85% is the minimum acceptable rate of a endance. A sa sfactory record of a endance and punctuality at school in all years is required by stu‐dents to qualify for either a ROSA or Higher School Cer ficate. Sport is a mandatory and integral part of the school curriculum. Students are required to a end sport. Doctor and den st appointments (other than emergencies) should be organised outside of school hours.

HOMEWORK
“Homework is a valuable part of schooling. It allows for prac sing, extending and consolida ng work done in class. Homework provides training for students in planning and organising me and develops a range of skills in iden fying and using informa on resources. Addi onally, homework establishes habits of study, concentra on and self‐discipline.” (NSW DoE) The Holsworthy community of schools have a combined belief:
That homework should be a purposeful learning experience, designed to consolidate and reinforce or extend concepts already taught in class. Parents and caregivers, students and teachers are vital to the dynamics generated by the homework partnership.
That homework fosters and develops mature study habits, self discipline and a life‐long love of learning.
That homework should be administered with a balanced approach, in recogni on that learning also occurs outside the formal school environment.
STUDENT WELLBEING
Holsworthy High has a strong Wellbeing and Discipline Policy opera ng in the school. The welfare of students is nurtured by our Year Advisors, Counsellors, Welfare Head Teacher, Girls Supervisor, Defence Liaison Mentor, Careers Advisor as well as Learning Support Teachers. There are regular welfare mee ngs where welfare strategies are discussed and ac vely pursued to support the changing needs of students across all stages of their learning. Personalised and differen ated learning and support allows all students to reach their full poten al. There is targeted support for students at the school level. Interven ons are tailored to the individual needs of students and are co‐ordinated to access exper se from across the school community.
16
Deten on:
An a er school deten on programme operates on Thursday a ernoon from 3.00 pm to 4.00 pm in the Library. Students have the opportunity to complete independent study while on deten on and have access to computer technology. Parents will be no fied when their child is issued with a deten on.
If parents do not want their child to a end the deten on they need to inform the teacher who issued the no fica on in wri ng prior to the nominated deten on. Students may complete the deten on as 4 x 20 minutes at lunch mes instead of a er school.
Out of Bounds
Some areas are “out of bounds” for students. This is because the areas are either dangerous, private or they do not have teacher supervision. Such areas include all roofs, car parks, teacher staffrooms, prep rooms and classrooms when a teacher is not present. Out of bound areas in the playground are marked with red lines.
Prohibited Items As in all state high schools items that are prohibited include weapons, drugs, aerosol cans, thick permanent markers, lasers and other dangerous items.
Prohibited items will be immediately confiscated. The police will be no fied as per DOE policy in cases of illegal items.
MOBILE PHONES
Mobile phones are part of modern society. Many students have a phone and bring it to school, usually with the knowledge and consent of their parents who see it as convenient and important for their child’s safety. Unfortunately, mobile phones present a number of concerns for schools including:
Interrup ng lessons and disrup ng the learning of others
Incidence of the
Disrup ng examina ons and assessment tasks
Being used for malprac ce in examina ons and assessments
Being used to photograph / video others without consent.
MOBILE PHONE POLICY
1 Students are discouraged from bringing mobile phones to school. The school accepts no responsibility for mobile phones that are brought to school.
2 Phones are not to be used in class to make or receive calls or messages. Phones must be turned off when students enter the classroom and remain off un l students are dismissed unless otherwise directed by the teacher.
3 Students who use their phone in class inappropriately will have the phone confiscated and placed in the lockup ll 3.00 pm. Students should not allow other students to use their phones.
4 Likewise students who use their phone inappropriately in the playground eg. to film other students, will have their phone confiscated.
5 If a phone is confiscated the staff member will send the student with their phone and a note to the Principal / Deputy Principals.
6 If parents need to contact their child urgently during class me they should contact the school through the switchboard. Alterna vely they could leave a message on the students message bank for viewing during a break.
In addi on, Holsworthy High School Bring Your Own Device program aims to improve student learning experiences both in and out of the classroom. The school does so with the expecta on that students will make good decisions with regard to their personal use of technology. The Bring Your Own Device User Charter must be agreed to and signed before students are permi ed to bring their devices to school and connect them to school facili es. Students and parents/carers must carefully read the Charter prior to signing it. Any ques ons should be addressed to the school and clarifica on obtained before the Charter is signed. The Charter and agreement can be obtained from the school website.
17
SCHOOL UNIFORM
Holsworthy High School is a uniform school.
It is the expecta on that all students a ending our school will be dressed in full school uniform. School uniform promotes a sense of belonging for students and creates a posi ve iden ty for the school community. School uniforms also contribute to the personal safety of students by allowing easier recogni on of students inside the school and in the community. Holsworthy High School expects students to wear the uniform during school hours, while travelling to and from school and when engaged in school ac vi es out of school hours.
Students who consistently wear school uniform are acknowledged through Semester Reports and the Merit Scheme while students out of uniform are unable to represent the school or par cipate in certain events or du es.
