Thursday, October 5

Elections are held every November. The Nominating Committee begins talking to members In September

about becoming part of a very active Advisory Council. These meetings are open to the membership. If you

are considering running for the Council, you are welcome to join us at a Thursday meeting.

Advisory Council – President’s Meanderings:

Autumn marks the transition from summer to winter. It brings a new crispness to the air and beautiful foliage of red,

orange and yellow for all to enjoy. It is also a time for harvest, festivals, elections and the Hollin Hall Bazaar. Each

year, on the third Saturday of October, the Advisory Council sponsors a fall bazaar. The proceeds are used to support

the programs and activities offered at our senior center. We cannot do this without your help…it is really a total

‘community’ effort. Sign-up sheets, with job duty descriptions, will be posted in the lobby.

Reminder: Advisory Council Elections will be held in November.

Hollin Hall Senior Center Advisory Council Liaison Program

The Liaison Program began close to 10 years ago when the Council President at that time wanted a better way to

communicate questions and concerns from the general membership to center staff and the center’s Advisory Council.

On the other side of the coin, a way was needed to help disseminate and share information from the staff and

Advisory Council to the general membership. A list was then created of all recurring programs, activities and club

meetings; day/days and time the club meets, room number assigned and club leader’s name. Each Advisory Council

member would then be asked to choose several clubs they’d be interested in being a liaison to. To make it easy, for

instance, an Advisory Council member could choose an activity they already attend, making it easy to take Center

information to that club leader and to take any requests or issues back to the staff and Advisory Council. The liaison

makes occasional visits to the club leader they’re assigned to in order to see if there are any needs or requests, or to

communicate any pertinent information from staff regarding policy and procedure. This streamlined the way

information was put out to the membership from the staff and the way staff was able to hear and address the concerns

and requests of the membership.

A Letter from Julie upon Her Retirement, October 2017

“Follow your passion. It will lead you to your purpose.” –Oprah Winfrey

One of my most memorable days was when I received a phone call from Dorothy Keenan, Senior Services

Director; she called to offer me the Director position at Hollin Hall Senior Center. That was 16 ½ years ago.

Flash forward to now. I have been reflecting on my experiences with Neighborhood and Community Services

(NCS). The position of Director at HHSC has afforded me the opportunity to connect with some amazing people at the

center, within our Mount Vernon community and community at large. How amazing we all are! How many gifts and

wisdom we have shared with one another! What an amazing center YOU have created.

But as many of my retired friends tell me, “You know when it is time to move on.” Derek Walcott, one of my favorite

poets, says,”

“The time will come when with elation you will greet yourself arriving at your own door, in your own mirror and each will smile at the other's welcome…. Sit.

Feast on your life”

Yes, it is time to ‘feast on my life” but not without sharing with you that I have discovered, through my experiences in this position, my future purpose and passion. In March, I had the good fortune to hear Darren Walker, President of the Ford Foundation, as the key note speaker at an Americans for the Arts, Nancy Hanks lecture on the

Fairfax County Transportation Options – Fastran offers specialized transportation

services for residents of Fairfax County and the Cities of Falls Church and Fairfax. All Fastran riders must be

certified by a participating agency before utilizing the service. Fastran provides a variety of transportation

services for critical medical care, individuals with physical or intellectual disabilities and older adults.

Applications for service are available at your local senior center. **Hollin Hall currently offers transportation

to and from the Center on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Your application alone does not guarantee approved transportation. Schedulers will review which catchment

area you are in, bus/route availability, bus seating, and time availability.

**NOTE: If there is not an option available at the time of application, the Senior Center can reapply for the

individual every 30 days. You will be put on a waiting list.

Dial-A-Ride, Seniors on the Go and TaxiAccess are programs that provide subsidized taxi services to County

residents who are income eligible. Participants in these programs have the opportunity to purchase coupon

books good toward taxicab rides with providers licensed to do business in Fairfax County. These programs are

administered by the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services and each program has specific

eligibility requirements and associated costs for participation. To help choose a program or to get further

information please call 703-222-9764, TTY711 or visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/ncs.

Arts. He spoke of, “The Art of Democracy-Creative Expression and American Greatness”. He grew up in rural Texas and by chance, stumbled upon the arts. To quote, “…the chances of my exposure to the arts were so improbable that I really should not be here with you tonight. And I imagine each of you can name a time when the arts changed your life, or your perspective—a moment when the arts moved you to empathy or to action; a moment when art made it possible for you to be the person you are today.” So, this will be my next endeavor- to touch the lives of those who may not have access to the arts

. Please know that you have an amazingly strong Advisory Council led by our very own volunteer, Veronica

Cartier-my ‘energizer bunny”. I cannot say enough great things about the HHSC Staff. I couldn’t do what I do without their hard work and devotion to the cause: LaMond Averett, Becky Bilowus, Patricia Bruch, Veronica Cartier, Edna Rogers, Jennifer Smith, Joan Watkins and Servicesource staff—Taylor and Diana…. Oh and my Supervisors, LaTishma Walters and Pallas Washington-you have been a true inspiration to me. Laughter was our therapy for sure!

Keep on keepin’ on—Live-Love-Laugh, create, sing, dance, play music, PLAY, enjoy music, DIG in and know that you are part of the whole here at HHSC. Thanks for the memories! I will treasure them! Come join me in a farewell afternoon, Thursday, October 12, in Room 112 from 1-3 p.m. Yours Truly, Julie Ellis, Director, HHSC

News You

Can Use

Hollin Hall Senior Center Trips

Wednesday Trips of Necessity (Shop ‘N Nosh) require a 5-person minimum sign up for the trip to occur. Please alert staff if you’ve signed up for a trip in advance and need to cancel.

Charter Trips (other trips to museum exhibitions, sporting events, etc.) require a 10-person minimum sign up for the trip to occur. Again, please alert staff if you’ve signed up for a trip in advance and need to cancel.

The staff take your trip suggestions seriously. A lot of planning goes into the process of scheduling a trip. Talk it up with your friends and other center members to ensure that we have enough people for the trip to be a success!

Gentle Courtesy Reminders

Although Center hours are stated as being 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., the staff kindly ask that any late afternoon programs begin closing down at 3:45 p.m. This allows you to clean up and take a bathroom break before the Center closes. This is a large building and it takes a while to close entirely by 4 p.m. Your cooperation is much appreciated.

When attending our informational health and other educational programs, please be attentive to the speaker. Wait until the end of the program to ask questions or at a time when the speaker asks the audience for any questions. This allows others to be able to listen and be fully engaged and get the most out of the program they’re attending.
