Safety Begins at Home

Lets start with your bike! Everyone should read their owners manual included with each bike purchase. This will give you very important facts and information regarding regular mainte-nance of your bike.

1) Once that is done, with manual in hand check the tire pressure. If your bike sits for a while there can be a big drop in tire pressure. Recently mine dropped to 26 pounds in just 2 months this last winter.

2) It is also very important to check your tire tread depth. A few years ago I bought a great gauge that has both tire pressure and depth from my local dealership. It is very easy to read and has saved me many times. You may feel your tread depth is fine, but you need to think of your upcoming rides because it can go into the red very fast.

3 )Check your oil & Transmission fluids. Most service men that I have know always say never overfill these items. Keep up on your regular scheduled maintenance.

4) Check for loose Bolts and screws. My exhaust was 3 full turns loose last time I checked . I have seen footpegs, mufflers and air cleaner covers all fly off bikes. It never happens at a convenient time.

5) If you recently added new parts on your bike, it is wise to bring along tools so you can check tightness. Never over tighten, a soft touch and Locktite usually work best.

Safety starts with your bike. Any time you can avoid problems makes for a great ride!

As a new segment of the year begins with new Officers elected, I hope you as members of this great chapter, welcome the changes. I will be continuing as Director, Scott Sims will assume the Safety Officer duties, Janell Sims will be our Photographer and Bunnie Weaver will assume the Membership Officer duties. All other positions will remain the same.

With the changes above, they will be attending Hog Officer Training which will be held in Las Vegas this year in April. Get ready for some pumped up Officers once they return. It is an energizing experience full of great ideas and lessons learned from other chapters across the US.

It looks like we will have some great weather and according to the weather predictors, an early spring which means good riding. Check the ride schedule and make plans for the rides you plan to go on.

It is also time to start thinking of some rides for the second half schedule. Write them down and/or e-mail them to anyone in the Officer Group. You may also drop them in the box at MRHD. The earlier we get them the better for planning.

I want also to say THANK YOU to the outgoing Officers for their time and dedication to our chapter. Wes Haw-kins – Membership, Bob Brierly – Safety, Bunnie Weaver - Photographer

I look forward to seeing you at the meetings and on the rides.

RIDE SAFE (IT ’S NOT THE DESTINATION, IT ’S THE RIDE)

The officers of your chapter get to-gether and plan rides for your chapter adventure for each semester and we try to do this based on who shows up. We can do this more effectively if we get as much input from all of our members. Since apparently our HOG box by the sink at the dealership rarely gets information on that subject, we do the best we can. In other words, we really would like to have your input on that ride and eatery that you would like to share with your chapter. Ride Safe, educated and have fun.

The river run was started in 1983 with 426 participants. It was "conceived by Harley-Davidson dealer Dale Marschke, who wanted to bring his customers on a fun weekend ride." The name comes from the fact that riders are riding out to the Colorado River, on which Laughlin sits.

Other riders go across the river to Laughlin's sister city, Bullhead City, Arizona, Route 66 rides to Oatman, Arizona and Kingman, Arizona and also down to Lake Havasu City, Arizona. The Laughlin River Run today takes place annually dur-ing the last weekend in April, normally beginning on Wednesday and finishing on Sunday. The event is cur-rently promoted by Dal-Con Promotions and features several attractions and events, including live concerts, many motorcycle vendors, a poker run, drag races, bike show, Ms. Laughlin competition and charity events. Accommodations are usually made at the various large hotels in Laughlin, however in recent years, campsites have also been utilized for RV's. The 2002 rally was marred by the River Run Riot, a major brawl between rival motorcycle clubs (Hells An-gels and Mongols) at Harrah's Laughlin that left three bikers dead, another 13 injured, and 9 bikers arrested.

As we approach spring the Memorial Day Holiday cannot be far behind. Lest we forget that this is a holiday not just about store sales, hot dogs, burgers, and ribs and chicken on the grill, but it is to honor and commemorate those who lost their lives in service to their…OUR coun-try.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remember-ing the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces. The holiday, which is observed every year on the last Monday of May, originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868,

when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Deca-tur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service.

With the true meaning of Memorial Day in mind I would like to share some information with the chapter members. I have been exploring several avenues looking for a way that our chapter could become involved in supporting area veterans. We have already created a sponsorship program to pay chapter dues for any new veteran who joins the chapter. These people are our sons, daughters, aunts, uncles, moms and dads. They are our friends and neighbors, a class of people who have made sacrifices for all of us, and our country. From personal experience I know that even a small showing of appreciation means much to our veterans.

At the February officers meeting I proposed a motion, which was approved unanimously, to begin a Chapter1061 tradition of sponsoring two annual poker runs, one of the runs for the Memorial Day Holiday and the other for Veterans Day. All of the proceeds will go to two local veteran’s groups. What that means is that the proceeds will benefit Mohave County vets. The Memorial Day Poker Run is scheduled for May 21st. The Veterans Day Poker Run is still being finalized. The two area Veterans groups are:

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 975 http://www.vva975.org/

&

Jerry Ambrose Veterans Council http://www.javc.org/

Both organizations are non-profits and are great resources for area vets. The other news is that in the near future our web site will have a VETERANS tab, which will provide up-dated Vets news, various linked Vets web sites, and whatever else I can come up with that is motorcycle and Vet related. If anyone has any other ideas relating to the subject of veteran’s outreach, please let me know.

See ya on the road.

Frank J. Musumeci HOG Chapter 1061 Ambassador
