2 TEAMMATES FALL 2017

Letter from the Chairman of the boardDear Teammates,

A new hockey season has begun, with exciting new faces that will lead our way into the future as well

as the familiar faces of the players who are leading the league now. And as the Hockey Hall of Fame celebrates all facets of this great game of ours, I am very much looking forward to this year’s Induction Weekend, where some very familiar faces will be welcomed as our newest Honoured Members: Players Dave Andreychuk, Danielle Goyette, Paul Kariya, Mark Recchi and Teemu Selanne, as well as Builders Clare Drake and Jeremy Jacobs.

The Hockey Hall of Fame enjoyed an outstanding summer, which included the opening of the Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup Champions artifact display, a new exhibit zone dedicated to the evolution and artistry of goalie masks, and most recently on September 20th I was joined by my pals Darryl Sittler and Johnny Bower in helping to open the Tim Hortons – Hockey Hall of Fame Special Edition restaurant. Located just steps away from the Hall’s Spirit of Hockey retail store within the atrium at Brookfield Place, the co-branded restaurant features themed exhibits on each of the seven Canadian NHL franchises, as well as artifacts honouring Tim Horton (HHOF Class of 1977), the namesake and co-founder of the iconic Canadian restaurant chain.

As we look ahead into 2018, I am particularly excited about two milestones being celebrated by the Hockey Hall of Fame -- 75 years since its inception and 25 years since moving into the magnificent space it now occupies in downtown Toronto. The marquee event to commemorate these milestone anniversaries will be the Hockey Hall of Fame 75/25 Anniversary Legends Gala at historic Maple Leaf Gardens on Monday, June 25, 2018. A series of fan forums and other “75/25” related activities will also be promoted throughout the peak summer tourist season in 2018.

So as you’ll see in this edition of Teammates, the Hockey Hall of Fame, just like the game of hockey, continues to grow and evolve to remain as interesting and exciting as ever before.

With my best regards,

Lanny McDonaldChairman of the Board

On September 10, 1943, the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association and National Hockey League agreed to establish the Hockey Hall of Fame as “a memorial to

those who have made outstanding contributions to the development of Canada’s great winter sport -- ice hockey”. Two years later, fourteen individuals were selected to the inaugural group of Hockey Hall of Fame Honoured Members, including luminaires from hockey’s formative years such as Lord Stanley of Preston, Howie Morenz, Art Ross and Georges Vezina. Originally destined for Kingston, Ontario, the first bricks and mortar exhibition facility eventually opened on the Canadian National Exhibition Grounds in Toronto on August 26, 1961, and after close to thirty-two years at the “EX”, the Hockey Hall of Fame relocated and expanded to its present location in downtown Toronto at Brookfield Place (formerly BCE Place), where it continues to flourish since opening on June 18, 1993. In 2018, the Hockey Hall of Fame 75/25 Anniversary Celebrations will commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the establishment of the Hockey Hall of Fame, together with the 25th Anniversary of the Hockey Hall of Fame attraction at Brookfield Place. In view of the upcoming Hockey Hall of Fame 75/25 Anniversary Celebrations, the Hockey Hall of Fame has formed a new endowment fund with the purpose of generating an on-going income stream to support future capital investment, outreach programs and institutional legacy projects.

The marquee event of the inaugural endowment fundraising campaign is the Hockey Hall of Fame 75/25 Anniversary Legends Gala to be held at historic Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto on Monday, June 25, 2018. The campaign goal is to secure 75 Founding Members (individuals and businesses) of the new Hockey Hall of Fame Development and Preservation Fund each making a one-time contribution of $25,000. Founding Members will receive (among other benefits) tickets to attend the 75/25 Legends Gala in the presence of the Hall’s fraternity of hockey legends and other special guests and entertainers. In addition to generating endowment net proceeds of up to $1.0M from the 75/25 Legends Gala, the Hockey Hall of Fame will endeavour to further benefit from developing and fostering relationships with new donors. Celebrated world-wide as the model for innovation and efficiencies in the sport halls of fame and museum field, and now in its second of five terms on a 99-year lease at Brookfield Place (renewed through 2032), the Hockey Hall of Fame’s growth and development

depends to a large degree on private sector sponsorships and contributions. As a non-profit organization and registered charity, and through the generous support of businesses and individuals, the Hockey Hall of Fame will continue to carry out its institutional mandate of preserving the

rich history of the game of hockey, as well as entertaining and educating hockey fans of

all ages for generations to come.

The highly successful HHOF commercial that is up for national awards presents a humourous take on maximizing one’s experience when seeing the Hall of Fame’s NHL Centennial exhibit.

In promotion of the limited-time NHL Centennial exhibit, a marketing campaign featuring “Real Reality” technology was

launched during hockey’s peak playoff stretch and continued through the summer. Phase 1 of the campaign centred on a comedic 30-second video that parodies the virtual reality craze. In lieu of experiencing life through new technologies, the commercial reminds everyone that nothing truly compares to actual reality. The actors in the video, all wearing goggles without lenses, provide testimonials about their unparalleled life-like experience as they view artifacts on display at this one-of-a-kind exhibit. Phase 2 of the campaign was amplified with digital support, in-cinema advertising, in-arena signage and through partner networks, and included the satiric “Real Reality” goggles that were distributed during selected airings and made available at the Hall of Fame.

“The Mask”, presented by Imports Dragon, features an extensive gallery of goalie masks showcasing their evolution and stylist transformation over the years. Notable masks on display include those worn by Honoured Members Jacques Plante, Johnny Bower, Ken Dryden, Ed Belfour and Grant Fuhr. Also included in the exhibit is an animated presentation that tells the story of over 150 goalies and the historic and artistic significance behind their distinctive masks ranging from the inclusion of celebrity icons, athletes from alternate sports and defunct teams.

In honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary and the intrinsic relationship between the nation, its servicemen and hockey, the Hall of Fame displayed a portion of the

renowned “Kandahar Boards” that formed the iconic Kandahar Airfield ball hockey rink during the Canadian engagement in Afghanistan. The rink, a symbol of Canadian presence in the middle of the desert, served as a social escape for soldiers to participate in our national passion as well as the site for morale-boosting games that involved visiting NHL players, Members of Parliament and notable personalities. In addition to this photo shoot opportunity, the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Personalized Tour App included a special “Canada 150” custom tour.

From June 30 – September 4, 2017, the “Kandahar Boards” were made available for photo taking for patrons of the Hall.

The introductory showcase of the exhibit, “The Mask”, features artifacts depicting the evolution of the goalie mask, from protection to expression.

CANADIAN TIRE CORPORATION, LIMITED, one of Canada’s leading retailers with over 500 stores selling a wide range of automotive, home, leisure and sporting good products, has entered into a two-year HHOF sponsorship and promotional licensing agreement with the Hall through August 31, 2017. Canadian Tire will serve as a co-presenting sponsor of the Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Weekend/Celebration, hold title to the annual Inductee Fan Forum, and assume a show programme segment presenting sponsorship role in association with the Hockey Hall of Fame 75/25 Anniversary Legends Gala.

ADIDAS CANADA LIMITED, a subsidiary of adidas AG, the second largest sportswear manufacturer in the world, has entered into a five-year sponsorship agreement with the Hall through June 30, 2022. In addition to the Hall’s standard promotional licensing rights and benefits, adidas will also assume co-presenting sponsorship of the annual Haggar Hockey Hall of Fame Legends Classic and outfit the participating team jerseys, as well as the Hall’s front line service staff.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUEIn its fiscal year ending June 30, 2016, the Hockey Hall of Fame completely retired its outstanding debt obligations to the National Hockey League established to assist with the relocation and expansion of the Hall from the CNE Grounds to Brookfield Place (formerly BCE Place) in 1993 and subsequent “NHL Zone” capital development in 2006. As the “HHOF/NHL Loan and General Support Agreement” expired on the discharge of the NHL loans, a new form of cooperation agreement addressing matters of mutual interest and opportunities for each organization to assist the other was formalized in July 2017. These include (i) the Hall receiving rebates on sales of NHL-licensed merchandise in its Spirit of Hockey store, (ii) the NHL providing promotional support to drive attendance at the Hall, (iii) continued NHL support of the Hall’s annual induction celebration, (iv) arrangements for the use of the NHL’s ”Stanley Cup” and the Hall’s “Keeper of the Cup” trademarks, (v) the Hall’s custodial services in support of Stanley Cup appearances at NHL or NHL club events, (vi) NHL use of Hall artifacts, memorabilia and other historical objects at NHL events, and (vii) each party’s right to use the other’s images, video and other multimedia assets in agreed circumstances. The NHL will also make a significant “seed” contribution as a “Founding Member” of the “Hockey Hall of Fame Development and Preservation Fund”.

As part of the new cooperation agreement

between the two organizations, the Hockey Hall of Fame contributed

content in the form of artifacts for the NHL

Centennial Fan Arena Tour that is travelling to NHL cities in North America.

(Doc) Seaman Hockey Resource Centre. The publication will be available throughout Canada coinciding with the start of the 2017-18 NHL season.

IMPORTS DRAGON, a Canadian-based global toy manufacturer and distributor and one of the fastest growing toy companies in North America, offering a wide range of products including an extensive line of hockey player figurines, has signed an extensive five-year sponsorship and licensing agreement with the Hall through May 31, 2022. Recent ACQUISITIONS

back-tO-back tItlEsLess than half a year after receiving a 2016 Stanley Cup ring from the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Hall of Fame returned the favour when they carried the Stanley Cup back out onto the ice at the Bridgestone Arena following the Pens 2-0 victory over the hometown Nashville Predators in Game Six of the Cup Final. The Penguins became the first team since the Detroit Red Wings in 1997 and 1998 to win back-to-back Cup titles, while captain Sidney Crosby became just the third repeat Conn Smythe Trophy winner, joining Mario Lemieux and Bernie Parent. The Hall of Fame would receive the regular donations to pay tribute to the club, including a jersey and gloves from rookie sensation Jake Guentzel, a jersey worn by Phil Kessel, and equipment from Evgeni Malkin and Marc-Andre Fleury. However, artifacts of a more superstitious nature highlight this year’s championship donation. General manager Jim Rutherford’s wife Leslie had not just one, but a full bag of good luck charms, trinkets and ideas that were meant to assist with the Pens “mojo” throughout the playoffs, and many found their way to our hallowed halls. Meanwhile, prior to every playoff game when Crosby taped his stick, he’d hand-off his old balled-up tape to the equipment crew, which was then kept for good luck in the jacket pocket of Penguins equipment manager Dana Heinze, and these “lucky” balls of tape were also e n s h r i n e d i n Toronto. Who says that hockey players are a superstitious bunch?

47 yEars IN thE makINgOne of the game’s earliest scoring sensations during the early 20th century, Richard “Dickie” Boon, was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1952. Boon started playing hockey in Montreal in 1894 at the age of 16, and just eight years later, led the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (MAAA) to Stanley Cup victories in 1902 and 1903. Credited with being one of the first players to use the ‘poke-check,’ Boon retired in 1905 and was co-founder of the Montreal Wanderers, leading them to three Cup titles. During the early 1970s, then Hall of Fame curator Maurice “Lefty” Reid began discussions with Boon’s sister-in-law Eva, as well as family member Wayne Yank, to have a pair of his skates sent to the Hall of Fame. The skates were given to Eva’s husband Fred, who was Dickie’s brother, who used them until he passed away in the early 1950s. Unfortunately, Eva passed away in 1972 before making the donation and the skates were thought lost to time. When Mr. Yank passed away in 2007, the skates were inherited by his brother-in-law (and Dickie’s grand-nephew) Roy Rupert, who, upon cleaning out some cupboards during the most recent spring, came across the skates and correspondence letters dated 1970. Roy and his wife Morna contacted current Hall of Fame curator Philip Pritchard, and within a month, Dickie Boon’s skates made their way to Toronto. A precious donation that was more than 47 years in the making!

JuNIOr hOckEy lEgENdThroughout the course of a 15-year NHL career that saw him lead the New York Islanders to four consecutive Stanley Cup titles from 1980 to 1983, Denis Potvin’s legacy saw him recently named one of the NHL’s Top 100 players of all-time, however, his greatness started prior to him lacing up the skates on Long Island. Playing for his hometown Ottawa 67’s in the OHA’s Major Junior loop, Potvin quickly made a name for himself during five full seasons with the club from 1968 to 1973. The final two years of his junior career saw Potvin become the first back-to-back recipient of the Max Kaminsky Trophy as best defenceman, while setting a new single-season scoring record by a rearguard in 1972-73 with 88 assists and 123 points in just 61 regular season contests. Following the campaign, Potvin was selected first overall by the Islanders and the rest is history. On a recent visit to the D.K. (Doc) Seaman Hockey

Resource Centre, the current Florida Panthers broadcaster dropped off both of his personal Max Kaminsky Trophies to be featured as part of the

Hall of Fame’s Junior Hockey Legends collection.

“thE rEd barON”On April 10, 2017, longtime University of Michigan Wolverines head coach and legend, Gordon “Red” Berenson officially announced his retirement after 33 seasons behind the school’s bench. The 77-year old had previously coached in the NHL with the St. Louis Blues and Buffalo Sabres, winning the Jack Adams Award in 1980-81, and had a lengthy 17-year playing career with four different NHL clubs. Immediately, Hall of Fame curators contacted Berenson and made the journey to Michigan, bringing home a treasure trove of artifacts from another incredible career. Along with numerous awards and mementoes from his time at Michigan was a puck from the 1959 World Championship in which he led Canada in scoring, a stick he used with the 1961-62 Montreal Canadiens, and a unique ‘The Goaltenders Salute’ plaque presented to him following his remarkable, record-breaking, six-goal performance as a member of the St. Louis Blues on November 7, 1968. That night saw Berenson set new NHL records for most goals in a road game (6), consecutive goals in a single game (5) and tied the NHL record for most goals in one period (4).
