    Introduction The Hitachi NAS Platform (HNAS) is a versatile, intelligent, and scalable multi-protocol solution. HNAS can be configured in many ways to meet a variety of requirements. Understanding the principles of how storage is used within HNAS will help you maximize the solutions capabilities and reduce the likelihood of improper configuration. This document details the best practices for configuring and using Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning (HDP), predicated on the use of thin provisioned Dynamic Provisioning (DP)-Volumes. The support for thin provisioned DP-Volumes was introduced in the HNAS v12.1 code release. The document assumes that you are familiar with HDP and HDS storage.

    Traditional RAID Group versus HDP Pool Integration In the traditional HNAS implementation, RAID groups are created and then presented to the HNAS sever as Logical Units (LU) or Logical Unit Number (LUNS). HNAS views these LUNS as system drives (SD). Best practice mandates a one-to-one mapping of RAID group to LUN. When added to a span or storage pool, each of the system drives will have a corresponding System Drive Group (SDG). This effectively results in one LUN per RAID group, one SD per LUN, and one SDG per SD.

    An HDP Pool is typically comprised of multiple RAID Groups. The HDP pool is divided into multiple DP-Volumes. Best practices generally suggests one or two DP-Volumes be created for each installed RAID group within the HDP Pool although the number of HDDs per RG and class of media (HAF, SSD, SAS, NL-SAS) can alter that. These DP-Volumes are viewed from HNAS as system drives. When a span or storage pool is created from an HDP Pool, a single parallel SDG is created that contains all of the SDs/DP-Volumes.

    Simplistically speaking, when provisioning storage with HNAS using HDP (v12.1 or later) there are a few steps that should be followed:

    Create RAID Groups or Pool Volumes and the HDP pool with a total capacity as large as required at the time of provisioning. Account for the need of file systems to maintain file system utilization no higher than 85% (to prevent performance degradation).

    Create DP-Volumes no more than three times the capacity of the real storage (300% over-provisioned) in order to meet the anticipated growth over the next few years.

    Create a span on all the DP-Volumes, placing all system drives in a single stripeset

    Create, format, and mount file systems on the span. Share and/or export the file systems. Use this document in conjunction with the following man pages as they contain additional information on the topic of HDP:
