History Sequence of Lessons How has the land at the front of school changed over time? What would you like to be built there in the future, and why?

Lesson 1 Lesson 2 Lesson 3 Lesson 4

Focus To distinguish between the past, present and future; use words like then, now, yesterday, today, past, present. (Level 1)

To sequence familiar events using a timeline of drawings. (Level 1)

To use a range of communication forms and digital technologies, incorporating writing into their drawings. (Foundation/Level 1)

To use a range of communication forms and digital technologies, incorporating writing into their drawings. (Foundation/Level 1)

Tuning In Ask students if they can remember what the land at the front of the school used to look like. Explain that this was in the past. How long ago was this? A week ago? A day ago? Model drawing and labelling what it used to look like in the past / a month ago. Create simple ‘collaboration’ Ychart, getting students to articulate what they think working collaboratively looks like, sounds like, feels like. Put students into pairs.

Go outside and have a look at the changes that have occurred to the front of the school since the last time we looked. Come back and discuss and record changes on poster paper.

Go outside and look at the changes from last week to this week. Come back and discuss and record the changes on poster paper. Discuss what a timeline is and how we use timelines.

Whole Class Activity A [Support]

Go outside with students. Within their pairs, turn and talk, telling each other what they can see. Teacher to take some photos. Come back inside,

Students draw a picture of what they think will be constructed in the space out at the front of school. Also help students to scribe WHY this might be a good addition to the school. (Next lesson, students will use their ‘past’ ‘present’ and ‘future’ pictures to create their timeline.

Whole Class Activity B [At]

As a class students will brainstorm all the different things they can remember in the past. Go outside with students and the teacher will take some photos to refer to during the lesson. Once inside, students will be paired and discuss new things that they can see outside that wasn’t there before. In pairs, students will draw and label things they saw in the past and what they see now.

Students will draw a complete picture of what the space outside looked like in the past with labels, as well as, what it looks like now. These pictures will be used later to complete the timeline of drawings.

Students will go outside within their pairs and see how the land has changed since the last time we went outside. Allow students 10 minutes to draw a picture of what the space looks like in the present with labels. After, students will discuss with their partner what they think this space will be in the future. In pairs, they will come to an agreement to what the space will be used for and will draw and label what they think it might be. Discuss what a timeline is, show

students what it looks likes. Students will then sequence their pictures in order to create a timeline of their own.

Whole Class Activity C [Extension]

Go outside with students. Within their pairs turn and talk, telling each other what they can see. Teacher to take some photos. Come back inside students draw a picture of what they saw outside with their partner. Label the picture.

Ask students to brainstorm in their groups what they think the space outside the grade one building is going to be made into. Students are to draw what they think the area will be and label the picture.

Give students 510 minutes to finish off their pictures from the past 2 weeks. Ensure that they label all of the parts of their picture. Ask students if they know what a timeline is? Show them an example of a timeline. Students use iPad (Our Story App) to make their own book putting their pictures in a timeline of events with simple descriptive sentences.
