If you are among the many Standish citizens who have already marked your calendars for last week-end in June, then you are already aware of the great work that is being done by this committee of 4! It is amazing to think that just 4 people plan for this 3-day, all-around-town, full-of-food, fun and fellowship exciting summer event….but that is precisely what this group does, and their efforts for 2014 will begin shortly after the final event of the 2013 Standish Summer Spectacular is held. If you see any of these creative, energetic and probably exhausted committee members at any of this year’s events, please be sure to thank them for giving us a reason to celebrate Standish each June! Also, the committee would love to build from a committee of 4 to a committee of 5, 6, 7 or more…please consider joining us if you would like to be part of something spectacular!!

On August 1, 1974 a group of interested people wishing to organize a historical society in Standish met in the Marrett House parlor. Just 19 days later the Standish Historical Society became an official corporation in the State of Maine and by October 24, they had elected their first officers: Bevalie Marean, President; Dana Edgecomb, Vice President, Daisey Thomas, Secretary and Joyce Terrell, Treasurer. Joline Webber (last year’s parade Grand Marshal) was the first official Curator.

In the next few years a museum on the second floor of the Old Red Church was established. It’s open and welcomes visitors on Mondays and Thursdays from 1:00 to 4:00 pm during June to late September, or by appointment. They will be open from 10:00 to 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 29 during and after the parade.

The purpose of the Standish Historical Society is to educate people about the history of Standish and to preserve important artifacts and historical buildings.

The 2013 officers are: Glenna Jamison, President; Pam Slattery-Thomas, Vice President; Eleanor Sawyer, Secretary; Nadine Blake, Treasurer; Charles Ruby, Curator.

2013 Directors are Joline Webber, Audrey Woodbrey and Pam Slattery-Thomas.

Standish was selected as a GrowSmart Maine town for additional assistance with putting out the Standish Master Plan into place.

Standish was awarded the Safe Route to Schools grant based on the work of the Master Plan, the village Center design activity and the form-based code innovation.

Because of that activity Standish became the first town in Maine to adopt form-based codes, making it attractive to developers.

This lead to the article in this months DownEast magazine citing this innovative work to restore a traditional downtown area.

2013 parade grand Marshal: elmer alley

the standish summer spectacular committee is pleased to announce that it has selected the grand Marshal for this year’s standish summer spectacular parade.

Elmer Alley was one of a number of very qualified nominees for this honor, making it a challenging selection process for the committee. However, elmer’s longstanding history of service to our community and more specifically, his role in recording the town’s history makes him a wonderful person to lead this year’s parade, the theme of which is “History in the Making.”

elmer was born and raised in standish, and still lives in the house he was born in 88 years ago. While a youngster in standish, he attended grades 1-8 at the albion Howe elementary school and then attended the standish High school. He left home for 4 years to attend the university of Maine at orono, where he majored in agriculture. once he returned back to standish, he became the town clerk and tax collector, and he held that position for 32 years until retiring at the age of 62. throughout his term as tax collector, he worked in the town Hall at standish corner – which had previously been his elementary school. During his years here, elmer was active with the kiwanis club for many years, was a mason for over 30 years, and has been involved with the active senior citizens of standish. When informed at the active senior citizen luncheon that he was selected by the committee to be the grand Marshal, elmer was honored, and reminded those around him that he had been a grand marshal once before… many years ago when the parade route was up route 35 through sebago lake village. the comment was made by one of his tablemates that elmer is a great choice for the grand marshal, since he is “known and loved by many.”

elmer will surely represent our community well when he leads the parade on June 29th.

The land now included in the Town of Standish was originally part of the area hunted and occupied from time to time by the Sokokis Tribe of the Abenaki Indians.Moses Pearson commanded a company in the first siege of Louisburg and its capture, during the King George’s War. Humphrey Hobbs commanded a company of Indian fighters defending New Hampshire from French and Indian raids. Upon return from those expeditions the two captains in 1748 petitioned the General Court of the Provence of Massachusetts Bay for grants of land to establish a township somewhere in the County of York; and in 1750 the right to settle 22,640 acres was granted to the 120 men who had served in the two companies. The new township was called Pearson and Hobbs Town. Hobbs died of smallpox at Ft. William Henry during the last of the Indian wars and none of his men ever settled on the land. In May 1752 the Proprietors met and began the process of surveying and mapping the First Division of the land into 30-acre lots. Settlement began slowly and many of the ex-soldiers sold their rights for whatever cash they could get. Four roads were laid out which crossed at what is now Standish Comer. These four roads were each 8 rods wide (132 feet) Northwest Rd. (Oak Hill Rd.), Northeast Rd. (Sebago Lake), Southeast

History of StandishRd. (Gorham) and Southwest Rd. (Buxton). In the earliest days of settlement the Indians frequently razed their cabins and attempted to drive them out. The Proprietors then petitioned the General Court in Boston for funds to build a fort and supply an armed guard. The petition was ignored and the desperate grantees thereupon built a fort with their own funds. The fort was built at the intersection of the four roads so that the approaching Indians could easily be spotted. Within the fort there were a meetinghouse used for worship and meetings and several small houses against the walls of the fort for the families to occupy. In 1756 there were 16 families with an estimated total of 65 people. The men of the families alternated as armed guards of the fort. Only Joseph Thorn and Abraham York of the original grantees ever completed the requirements for gaining title to their land. During the time they occupied the fort, the early settlers were often near starvation. They were surrounded by Indians and their efforts to raise crops on their lots outside the fort failed because of raids by the Indians. At one time some of the bravest men sneaked out of the fort and killed a moose. They cut off and carried back one quarter of the carcass. By the time they could return with help to bring in the rest, the Indians had found and carried away the remainder of the moose. A petition to the General Court in Massachusetts in 1756 resulted in a grant of $6.40 a month (22c a day) to be divided among the sixteen families! These conditions continued until the fall of Quebec in 1759, at which time the warfare between the Indians and the English Settlements in the District of Maine came to an end. During the next twenty-six years settlers were able to work their land and build cabins and houses. The plantation called “Pearsontown” was incorporated into a town by the name of Standish by an Act passed 11/30/1785 in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is that incorporation we are celebrating this year of 1985, 200 years later, as the Bicentennial Year. STANDISH, Maine 1785-1985, Compiled & published by the Standish Historical Society
