The Symposium ProjectThe Glendon’s Student Annual International Studies Symposium is a project entirely con-ceived and managed by students. It was initiated during the 1995-1996 academic year by a group of highly motivated students, eager to deepen their knowledge and experience of for-eign countries or regions and the relations between Canada and those countries or regions. So far, the Project has covered the following countries or regions: Cuba (1995-1996), China (1996-97), South Africa (1997-1998), the European Union (1998-1999), the Middle East (1999-2000), South East Asia (2000-2001), Brazil (2001-2002), Russia (2002-2003), India (2003-2004), The Great Lakes Regions of Central Africa (2004-2005), Mexico (2005-2006), Turkey (2006-2007), Egypt (2007-2008), Venezuela (2008-2009), Iran (2009-2010) and Hispaniola (2010-2011)

Glendon College, located in North York, Toronto is a faculty of York University, the third largest university in Canada. Unlike any other exclusively liberal arts institution, Glendon provides a uniquely integrated bilingual educational experience, offering students the op-portunity to learn within the context of both of Canada’s official languages. Glendon also distinguishes itself with its strong focus in public and international affairs, small class sizes and high levels of interaction between students and professors.

Glendon graduates can be found in every public affairs domain, often playing key roles in government, international affairs, the judiciary, communications, the arts, business, and academia both in Canada and abroad.

The island of Hispaniola has a unique existence in the Western Hemisphere. Located North of Jamaica, East of Cuba, West of Puerto Rico and South of the United States, His-paniola holds the two sovereign states of Haiti and Dominican Republic. The Symposium Committee sees this island as the perfect fit to explore because it holds a rich and divergent history, thus offering a vast dimension for research in areas of economics, politics, history and sociology. “Condenados a convivir”, the two countries have been in a constant state of forced cooperation and coexistence with eras of animosity and strife.

The One Day Symposium will explore the relations of the countries under a variety of topics. Proposed topics include:

Religion and Culture

Gender, Human Rights and Development

Environmenal Issues in Hispaniola

Interstate Relations between the Dominican Republic and Haiti

Post earthquake analysis

Why Hispaniola?

The Committee has approached panelists from a variety of different fields and areas of in-terest. Past Symposiums have had speakers and panelists from High Commissioners to the esteemed authors and renowned academics.

The International Studies Symposium has traditionally had over 200 attendees ranging from students, to academics, to government officials and activists in the Diaspora. It is open to the public.
