Dear Parents and Carers

We would like to welcome you to Hiltingbury Junior School. We are delighted that you and your child will be joining our school community in September. Since taking up my appointment in September 2013 I have felt very privileged to be leading such a dedicated group of staff who seek tirelessly to provide the best possible opportunities for each child in our care. We appreciate that every child is different, with their own unique interests and aptitudes, as well as areas which they may need additional support and encouragement. Our aim is to work in partnership with you to ensure that we can meet these needs as best we can. Our aim is to have a school community where every member feels safe and happy while also ensuring that they are supported on their journey as a lifelong learner. I am so pleased that you have chosen for your child to make that journey with us. I hope to see you at the information evening in July. We look forward to getting to know you and hope that you and your child will spend a happy and fulfilling time at Hiltingbury Junior School. Sam Hunter

Welcome to the HSPTA On behalf of the HSPTA we would like to extend a warm hello. For those who are new to the schools we look forward to meeting you and your children over the coming months. For those who are more familiar with the HSPTA, thank you for all your support to date and we hope this leaflet provides a useful update.

Hiltingbury Schools Parent Teacher Association (HSPTA) is a registered charity. Our aim is to raise money to support Hiltingbury Infant and Junior Schools achieve their ambitions and objectives.

The HSPTA is run by a group of parent volunteers with the support of the leadership teams and teaching staff from both schools.

Every year the HSPTA raises in the region of £15,000. This money enables the two schools to develop their resources or commission special projects to enhance the children’s learning.

Monies raised from the HSPTA have contributed to the refurbishment of both school libraries. These spaces have now become the heart of the schools; inviting, welcoming places where children can develop their love of books and learning. In addition to running a number of events over the last year, behind the scenes we have been working on a new website for the HSPTA (detailed overleaf). This is a really exciting development for the HSPTA. We hope the site will simplify and improve things for you as a parent.

With best wishes for the coming year, The HSPTA Committee

We need you! Getting involved in the HSPTA is a

fantastic way to meet like minded

parents and give something back to

your child’s school. It is fun, social

and rewarding.

We appreciate that everyone leads

busy lives so there are various ways

that you can get involved with the

HSPTA; from donating an hour of

your time at an event through to

joining the Committee. We also

understand that not everyone can

help out behind the scenes; coming

along and supporting our events is

really, really appreciated.

Please visit our website to view the

events already scheduled for the

Autumn Term. We look forward to

seeing you soon.

Ways you can help the HSPTA

Become a Class Rep The aim of the Class Reps scheme is to have a central point of contact

within each class; a facilitator to enable new ideas and feedback to reach

the HSPTA but also a quick and easy way for us to disseminate information

out to you through the classes. This is a new initiative that we will be

developing in line with our new website. Get involved to help shape how

the Rep role works.

Join the Committee Are you interested in joining the Committee? There is lots of scope to have

fun in the planning and delivery of our family friendly fundraisers. The

Committee currently consists of the following positions: Co-Chairs,

Treasurer, Co-Secretaries, Teacher Representatives alongside roles in

Sponsorship, IT & Communications and Fundraising Support. The

Committee meets once every half term (currently on a Wednesday or

Thursday evening at alternating schools) with additional sub-committee

meetings and event specific meetings throughout the year. The Committee

meetings are open to all parents so you can dip in and out or attend

regularly depending on what works best for you.

Please complete and return this form to the HSPTA via book bags or school offices. Thank you for your time and support.

You can sign up to our Golden Draw Would you like to raise money for the HSPTA and also be in with the chance of winning a prize for you and your family? Taking part in the prize draw costs from as little as £1 per month and it is an ideal way to support the schools in turn enhancing our children’s learning even further.

How does it work? The draw takes place once a month, and there’s an extra annual draw in August. It’s open to all parents, friends and staff of Hiltingbury Infant and Junior Schools (entrants must be over 16), and it costs £1 per number, per month. Payment is by standing order (form on reverse or you may set your SO up on-line through your own bank). You can buy as many numbers as you like! Half of the monthly total raised goes to our schools, half to the prize fund.

How much could I win? Currently, our monthly prize stands at approximately £30, and our annual prize at just over £288. If, however, 100 more people purchased just two numbers for £2 per month, we would raise £200 extra every month. Out of that fund, £100 more would be raised for our schools, and an extra £100 would go towards both the monthly and annual cash prizes. With almost 700 children at both schools, participation – and prizes – could be even higher!

You have got to be in it to win it! Please complete the entry form on the reverse of this page and hand it in to either school office. Good Luck!

Good Luck!

School Governors

Our Role

Alongside the head teacher and staff, the governors are committed to the provision of an excellent and varied experience for all our pupils, ensuring they meet their potential, learn effectively and achieve high standards across a diverse, challenging and inspiring curriculum.

Governors help the head teacher and staff set and reach targets and to strive for excellence across the whole spectrum of school life. The day-to-day running of the school is the responsibility of the head teacher and staff who create a caring, supportive and stimulating environment for the children to learn and achieve in, and the governors help with the strategic direction of the school. In addition, the governing body has a legal responsibility to:

- ensure the national curriculum is followed - oversee the school’s budget - monitor the condition of the school buildings and grounds - ensure that Special Educational Needs are met

Our approach

The Hiltingbury Governors approach to their role is one of commitment, honesty and openness in the performance of our responsibilities. We pride ourselves in the integrity of our members and the commitment shown in performing our duties. As governors, we support the staff and head teacher, balancing constructive criticism with positive comment, always striving for the best outcomes.

Types of governors

Governors are appointed to provide strong links between the school, parents and our local communities. There are four categories of governor, appointed by different bodies that have an interest in the school. These are:

- Community Governors - Local Authority (LA) Governors - Parent Governors - Staff Governors

We welcome governors with a variety of skills and from all walks of life – an open mind and a willingness to be involved are more important than particular qualifications.

Meetings

We meet every half term as a full Governing Body, and have two committees (Resource, and Curriculum & Standards) that meet once a term. Most governors also have special responsibility for a particular subject or area within the school, and will attend occasional meetings for that subject as needed.

Contacting us:

The best way of contacting any of the governors is through the school office, but if you see one of us at the school, do not hesitate to introduce yourself. We are always interested in feedback and comments – good or bad – as they will often help us to improve even further!
