Lent - As our seminary intern shared so meaningfully at our Ash Wednesday service, I too didn’t grow up observing lent. The only lent I knew about as a child, I found in my belly-button. First time I really remember anything about the unusual word was way back in 5th grade. My Catholic friend next door, Steve Sales, instead of coming out to pass the football with me for these several weeks, he went with his family to church on Wednesday AND Friday evenings! I asked why and he said with a forlorn look, they go every year – “It’s Lent.” As I expanded to some Lutheran friends in Seminary, I realized Lutherans - they really like this season – love to talk about sin, confession & depravity. The Lutheran minister in my previous town was a big joyful German guy from Wisconsin who said: atonement, sacrifice, penitence, introspection - all good words to use for Lent! Nowadays, Lent has become one of my favorite seasons of the church (right behind Advent). As Peter Gomes says, Lent is like the Christian’s Spring Training – it helps us “get in shape” offering different forms of spiritual exercises. Just like in our physical lives we know we should limber up, bulk up, or diet down, there comes a time in our spiritual lives when we realize that we’ve been spiritually lazy & need to get back to a disciplined routine. Lent offers that time. It’s a 40-day season of the church, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday. Actually, its 40 days plus 6 Sundays - for those doing the counting. Lent invites all of us to make the next 40 days something special – a pilgrimage, a spiritual journey, a 40-day spiritual excursion of introspection and discipline. Some choose to give up something; some choose to add; some both. Nearly 100 Highlanders have joined small groups for this Lent, to share in dialogue about the death-defying ministry of Jesus Christ. What a great time to fellowship and grow; to share, study, and pray. Whatever way you have choose, may this Lent be especially meaningful to you this year as we prepare to celebrate Christ’s victory over death on Easter Sunday!

Mission Service - The Wednesday Men's breakfast group has taken action on our church's challenge to put expand our community outreach. The first day of spring is right around the corner, and to celebrate this day, PW will hold a breakfast and speaker. Plan to join us now on March 20 for an 8:30 breakfast at the Lancaster Country Club, followed by returning speaker Carol Cool. Her topic is Spring Cleaning for the Soul: Getting Your Life Aired Out. Carol says “Feel like your spiritual life could use a little spring cleaning? Learn God’s plan to clean out the dirt, remove the excess clutter and remodel your inner “house.” Find out how you can simplify your life and beautify your spirit. Feel refreshed and ready to welcome the guests God brings into your

life.” The cost is $15. Sign up in the narthex Feb 25, March 4 and 11.

Join us! The PW Book Group will meet on February 28th at 12:30pm in Room 208 to discuss The Women in the Castle by Jessica Shattuck. Bringing your own lunch is optional. For questions please call Judy Eyster @ 717-299-3327 or email at [email protected]. We welcome visitors!

Easter Lilies~ Yes, its that time again! The Memorial Flower Committee of the Board of Deacons will be taking orders for the Easter Lilies now through February 28. The Lilies will be used to decorate our sanctuary, delivered to those who are grieving, sick or homebound, or ordered for your own enjoyment. Memorials can also be made to the Highland’s Hunger Fund, Highland’s Memorial Fund or Highland’s Memorial Garden Fund. There will be a form in the Heartbeat on those Sundays as well as a table set up in the Narthex to place the completed form in a designated box.

Living Last Supper ~ The Maundy Thursday service, March 29, 7 PM, will feature the drama,

the “Living Last Supper”. This is a living depiction of the Leonardo da Vinci painting of the last supper with the disciples each describing his relationship with Jesus. The men of Highland

have stepped up to be the disciples but there is still a need for members to help with props, costume fitting and preparation, and light make-up (don’t worry men!). If you have the time and interest to help with the preparation, please call or email Jerry Rothacker 717-940-1206, [email protected].

Senior Ministry Breakfast ~ All seniors (couples and singles!) are welcome on the first Thursday of each month for the Senior Ministry breakfast! The next meeting will be at the Oregon Dairy on Thursday, March 1 at 9 a.m. We hope to see you there!

Join us for this unique opportunity to serve God and grow in your Highland communi-ty. Through this inter-generational experience you will join others from our church for a week of service, fellowship, and worship. This year’s trip will be from July 15-21, 2018. You will create amazing memories and make life long friendships. Please visit the church office or highlandpc.org/mission/mission-trips/ to down load a registration form. Payment, registration, and medical forms should be completed and sent to the office no later than June 24, 2018. Any questions, please contact Jim Eberle [email protected] or Pastor Noe Juarez at: [email protected]. Don’t miss this adventure to serve God and show His love as you make homes warmer, safer, and drier!

Rainbow of Caring and Blankets~ Blankets, food and clean water provide disaster victims the hope they need to carry on in the midst of trauma and tragedy. Church World Service (CWS) provides this support along with seeds, livestock and tools to use in the recovery process. Please give cash or write a check payable to "Highland Church" with the "For" line marked CWS and place it in the envelopes marked Rainbow of Caring which are in the pew racks during February.

Library Announcement ~ It's that time of year again! We are now accepting books, dvd's and cd's (no video tapes) for our annual book sale. We ask that you only donate books in very good condition. Donations can be dropped off at room 206 or the library. Last year because of your generosity we raised $1300 and we thank you for your continued support of our annual fundraiser. We have at least 4 dozen new books and dvd's to display as soon as our new bookcase arrives. I can't wait to tell you about them. Christian fiction gets better every year!

Share Your Musical & Leadership Gifts ~ During 2018, Highland is providing worship leadership on the 2nd Sunday of each month at 2 p.m. for our neighbors at Long Home Community. Musicians, worship leaders and speakers are welcomed to support this worship ministry. This Sunday, Eric Hoerner, Margot Hoerner and Maggie Walker are leading the service. Immigration: A Christian Conversation

Senior Life Institute is partnering with Lancaster Theological Seminary for this program on Immigration. The topic of immigration will be presented through a Christian lens with support from New Testament scripture and theology. This in depth program will include:

• The history of resettlement in Lancaster County • A panel discussion with immigrants and refugees • Current day issues • An overview of the laws • A summary of the services provided by local agencies. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Eric Barreto of the Princeton Seminary. Save the dates for Thursday, March 8 (10 a.m.- 1:30 p.m.), Saturday, March 17 ( 2p.m. - 6 p.m.), and Thursday, March 22 (10 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.). Visit highlandpc.org or call the church office for more information and how to register.

One of the most often quoted remarks used in churches regarding stewardship comes from the founder of the Methodist church John Wesley:

"If those who gain all they can, save all they can, will likewise give all they can, then the more they gain, the more they grow in grace, and the more treasure they lay up in heaven."

Third Friday Valentine's Day Celebration Full of Fun

See how much fun Highland's members had as they gathered for fellowship and food. The former "Highlanders" joined with others in their 7th, 8th and 9th decades to share together about how to make new moments and memories in 2018. Many attendees brought favorite pot luck dishes which included appetizers, salads, specialty vegetables, casseroles, and wonderful desserts! All had a great time!

This past Wednesday the "Babes of the Bible" (BoBs) celebrated 100 years of living with Eleanor Sloan. Eleanor has been attending Highland since she became a resident at the Long Community at HIghland, the residential community next door to Highland Church. Eighteen Bible Study members and Highland Staff cheered Eleanor as she blew out candles that kept re-igniting. Happy Birthday, Eleanor!

Spiritual Growth for Lent

The second week of Lent, February 25 thru Mar 3 will continue Highland's new spiritual growth experience as nine small groups will meet to discuss the topic: "Right, Wrong and Holy" using Luke 10:36-37. There is still room to join several of the small groups that are meeting at the Church on Friday mornings at 10:30-noon in Fellowship Hall or 9:30am on Sunday mornings in Room 208. Sign up by calling the church office at 717-569-2651.

100 and Counting!
