ABOUT HIGHER EDUCATION

Higher Education is learning at university level, usually defined as a course that is Level 4 or above.

The courses/programmes offered by the College give you the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge enabling you to progress your career and fulfil your goals and aspirations.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS & COURSE INFORMATION

To progress into Higher Education, you would usually require a Level 3 or equivalent qualification such as A Levels, National Certificate/Diploma, NVQ Level 3 or an Access to Higher Education Diploma (see page 7).

This guide promotes Bishop Auckland College’s Higher Level courses, giving information on the specific entry requirements, content and potential progression routes.

Many of our mature students (over 21) have a wealth of work and life experience, but no formal academic qualifications. Sometimes mature students with relevant experience will be accepted on to our Higher Education courses/programmes without the full entry requirements criteria.

The College can also help guide students through the Universities’ accreditation for prior learning processes (APL).

FOUNDATION DEGREES

A Foundation Degree is different from a conventional degree, as it has been developed directly with industry professionals and employers to meet the specialist skills and knowledge required for that sector. It provides a way for you to improve your qualifications and career prospects by studying whilst in employment.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

There are no set entry requirements for Foundation Degrees, although a Level 3 qualification is desirable. Formal qualifications are not always necessary as appropriate commercial and industrial experience can be more relevant.

HOW LONG DOES A FOUNDATION DEGREE COURSE LAST?

Usually two years, after which students can choose to progress to a full honours degree, studying at the University of Sunderland.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The tuition fees for our Foundation Degree courses are £4,000 per year. Foundation Degree students can qualify for a Student Loan to cover the full cost of their tuition fees in the same way as degree students at university. Foundation Degree students are not eligible for a Student Loan if they already hold a qualification of the same level or higher (excluding PCET/PGCE).

UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIP LIAISON OFFICER

The Partnership Liaison Officer is based in the Higher Education Gateway Centre at the Bishop Auckland Campus and provides an accessible link for both students and staff between the University of Sunderland and Bishop Auckland College.

The Partnership Liaison Officer can also provide advice and guidance on a wide range of topics such as fees, UCAS applications, enrolment, applications for financial support, library access and distribution of university campus cards.

BTEC Higher Nationals provide a programme of specialist vocational learning at Levels 4 and 5 that reflects the requirement of professional organisations. With a strong emphasis on developing practical skills alongside specialist knowledge, BTEC Higher Nationals are recognised internationally by employers as providing learners with the key concepts and practical skills for direct progression to, or within, employment.

LEVEL 4 BTEC HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATE (HNC) 120 CREDITS

Learners who achieve a BTEC Level 4 HNC can progress first to a BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma which offers more specialisation and then potentially to degree level.

LEVEL 5 BTEC HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND) 240 CREDITS

BTEC Level 5 HNDs offer greater depth and specialisation than Level 4 HNCs, providing a robust platform into, or within, employment or to further study

at degree level. Learners achieving a Level 5 HND can also choose to use this as a starting point to work towards professional membership or study to entry to their specialist professional body.

The tuition fees for our BTEC Higher National courses are £3,900 per year. Students can qualify for a Student Loan to cover the full-cost of their tuition fees in the same way as degree students at university.

STUDENT LOANS AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT

NO UPFRONT COSTS

Higher National and Foundation Degree students at Bishop Auckland College can qualify for a Student Loan to cover the full cost of their tuition fees in the same way as degree students at university.

Employers often cover the cost of Higher Education study on behalf of employees because of the benefits they gain. This includes improved staff retention and newly acquired skills feeding into the business.

APPLYING FOR A LOAN

This loan is not income assessed or means tested and you will only start to make repayments when you are earning over £21,000 a year.

INTEREST RATES

Interest on your loan will be applied at the rate of inflation plus 3% up until the April which falls three years after the anniversary of the start date of your course.

Interest you will then be charged will be:• The rate of inflation if you are

earning below £21,000• The rate of inflation and up to

3% on a gradual scale if you earn between £21,000 and £41,000

LOAN REPAYMENTS

You will begin to repay your loan in the April which falls three years after the anniversary of the start date of your course, even if you are still studying. But you will only make repayments if you are earning over £21,000 a year.

If your course is shorter than the three years, you will start to repay your loan from the April after you graduate.

You repay only 9% of your income above £21,000. The amount you repay depends on how much you earn. For example, if you earn £25,000 the 9% would only apply to the £4,000, meaning you would only repay £30 a month. See table below for examples of what you could pay.Repayments will be deducted from your regular salary normally, through the tax system.

If your income falls below £21,000 at any point in your career the repayments will be suspended.

Any outstanding balance is written off after 30 years.

24+ ADVANCED LEARNING LOAN

From September 2013, anyone aged 24 and over and living in the UK will be able to apply for an Advanced Learning Loan for Further Education courses at Levels 3 and 4.

You don’t pay anything back if your loan is for the Access to Higher Education course and you progress to, and complete, Higher Education study.

Loans will not be means tested or subject to credit checks - and once you start earning above £21,000 you may pay as little as £5 per month - see table below for examples of what you could pay.

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION Level 3 Diploma

Bishop Auckland College has an excellent reputation for providing Access to Higher Education courses. Since they first became available, the courses have enabled hundreds of adults to progress to university to fulfil their dreams and aspirations of studying for a degree – an opportunity which many thought had passed them by.

The Access to Higher Education Diploma is designed for mature students, aged 19+ at the start of the programme, who want to go to university but don’t have the formal qualifications to get there. The programme is structured into specific pathways, which prepare students to study in Higher Education for a variety of careers as well as subject related degrees.

Diploma Pathways• Humanities/Social Science: This is designed to assist people to enter into careers such as Social Work,Youth Work, Law or to study for degrees in specific subjects such as Psychology.

• Health Science: This is designed for people who would like to enter a career in the health field, such as Nursing, Midwifery, Radiography or to study a science related subject such as Forensics.

24 + ADVANCED LEARNING LOAN

From September 2013, anyone aged 24+ and living in the UK will be able to apply for an advanced learning loan for Further Education courses at Level 3 and above.

You don’t pay anything back if your loan is for the Access to Higher Education course and you progress to and complete higher education study.

PRE-ACCESS CERTIFICATE IN PROGRESSION If you need to complete a pre-access course there are two options:

• 1 year course, starting September 2013 - Monday am and pm

• 6 months (condensed) course, starting January 2014 - Thursday am and pm and Friday am

On completion of the course you will receive a NOCN Level 2 certificate in progression.


COMPUTINGFoundation Degree

This Foundation Degree is designed for those wishing to work in software development, perhaps as a Computer or Database Programmer, Database Application Developer, Website Developer or in IT Support.

The programme focuses on the design, production and testing of high-quality software, which meets user needs and makes best use of new and emerging technologies. There is a strong emphasis on the use of software engineering methods. You will learn software languages and applications such as HTML, Java, PHP, MYSQL, Oracle, Access, Flash and Dreamweaver. The programme covers skills development in team working, showing initiative, self-motivation, presentation skills and working and communicating with people.

No prior knowledge of computing is necessary and students are welcome from both science and arts backgrounds.

Year 1:Students will receive a thorough grounding in a core counselling model and will learn how it can be applied to a range of human problems.

This core model will be compared and contrasted with several other counselling theoretical perspectives. Students will also learn about ethicaland legal issues in counselling.

EDUCATION AND CAREFoundation Degree

This Foundation Degree has been developed for Early Years Workers and Teaching Assistants who would like to move into Higher Education but cannot afford to give up paid employment.

The programme is aligned with Children’s Workforce Development Council policies and employer requirements across the sector and will focus on the relationship between theoretical understanding and practical knowledge.

All students on this programme should be in employment or have a significant voluntary role in the sector. You will be asked to identify a workplace mentor in or connected to your work setting. The mentor for this programme will not be asked to make assessment or evaluative judgements but to take on the role of a ‘critical and supportive friend’ in the setting.

To pursue the career path into teaching, it may be necessary to study maths and science.

Make an immediate impact with a course designed to produce highly skilled people who know their subject and can apply it. Designed in consultation with employers, the course content focuses on the development of leadership and management skills to enable students to pursue business management careers.

ADVANCED STUDIES IN EARLY YEARSHigher National Diploma (HND)

The two year HND is a Level 5 qualification and equivalent to the first two years of a university degree (240 credits). HNDs are well respected by universities and employers and offer a less costly alternative to a traditional university route.

The strong vocational elements in the Early Years course ensure participants study a range of units which will provide the theoretical knowledge, professional expertise and work-based learning relevant to a range of roles working with children 0 to 8 years of age.

Fine Art Masterclass with Karola McGrahAs part of our HND in Art and Design, Bishop Auckland College is working with professional artist Karola McGrah to provide a series of masterclasses in fine art.

Having exhibited internationally as well as locally, former Teaching Assistant Karola became a student again herself five years ago, when she joined Bishop Auckland College to take A Level Art and then a Foundation Degree in Applied Art. Karola then did her one year top-up degree at the University of Sunderland, from which she qualified with a first-class honours degree.

The OCR Level 6 Diploma in Career Guidance and Development (QCF) provides candidates with a high quality, nationally recognised qualification. This qualification is available to anyone who is capable of reaching the required standards and meeting the assessment criteria for the units through the particular setting in which they practice. It has been developed free from any barriers that restrict access or progression, thereby promoting equal opportunities.

There are no formal requirements for entry to this qualification.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

To achieve this qualification, candidates must achieve a total of 60credits made up as follows: • 45 credits from the seven

mandatory units in Group A • A minimum of 15 credits from the

optional units in Group B
