QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

ABOUT HIGHER EDUCATION

Higher Education is learning at university level, usually defined as a course that is Level 4 or above.

The courses/programmes offered by the College give you the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge enabling you to progress your career and fulfil your goals and aspirations.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS & COURSE INFORMATION

To progress into Higher Education, you would usually require a Level 3 or equivalent qualification such as A Levels, National Certificate/Diploma, NVQ Level 3 or an Access to Higher Education Diploma (see page 7).

This guide promotes Bishop Auckland College’s Higher Level courses, giving information on the specific entry requirements, content and potential progression routes.

EXPERIENCE COUNTS

Don’t let age, or lack of academic qualifications prevent you from enquiring about a Higher Education course/programme, our friendly and experienced staff will discuss the possibilities with you.

Many of our mature students (over 21) have a wealth of work and life experience, but no formal academic qualifications. Sometimes mature students with relevant experience will be accepted on to our Higher Education courses/programmes without the full entry requirements criteria.

The College can also help guide students through the Universities’ accreditation for prior learning processes (APL).

Employers and universities both measure your qualifications in terms of levels. The table opposite is a guide to help you when choosing a course and exploring routes into employment and Higher Education

FOUNDATION DEGREES

A Foundation Degree is different from a conventional degree, as it has been developed directly with industry professionals and employers to meet the specialist skills and knowledge required for that sector. It provides a way for you to improve your qualifications and career prospects by studying whilst in employment.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

There are no set entry requirements for Foundation Degrees, although a Level 3 qualification is desirable. Formal qualifications are not always necessary as appropriate commercial and industrial experience can be more relevant.

HOW LONG DOES A FOUNDATION DEGREE COURSE LAST?

Usually two years, after which students can choose to progress to a full honours degree, studying at the University of Sunderland.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The tuition fees for our Foundation Degree courses are £4,000 per year. Foundation Degree students can qualify for a Student Loan to cover the full cost of their tuition fees in the same way as degree students at university. Foundation Degree students are not eligible for a Student Loan if they already hold a qualification of the same level or higher (excluding PCET/PGCE).

UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIP LIAISON OFFICER

The Partnership Liaison Officer is based in the Higher Education Gateway Centre at the Bishop Auckland Campus and provides an accessible link for both students and staff between the University of Sunderland and Bishop Auckland College.

The Partnership Liaison Officer can also provide advice and guidance on a wide range of topics such as fees, UCAS applications, enrolment, applications for financial support, library access and distribution of university campus cards.

BTEC Higher Nationals provide a programme of specialist vocational learning at Levels 4 and 5 that reflects the requirement of professional organisations. With a strong emphasis on developing practical skills alongside specialist knowledge, BTEC Higher Nationals are recognised internationally by employers as providing learners with the key concepts and practical skills for direct progression to, or within, employment.

LEVEL 4 BTEC HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATE (HNC) 120 CREDITS

Learners who achieve a BTEC Level 4 HNC can progress first to a BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma which offers more specialisation and then potentially to degree level.

LEVEL 5 BTEC HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND) 240 CREDITS

BTEC Level 5 HNDs offer greater depth and specialisation than Level 4 HNCs, providing a robust platform into, or within, employment or to further study

at degree level. Learners achieving a Level 5 HND can also choose to use this as a starting point to work towards professional membership or study to entry to their specialist professional body.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Specific entry requirements will vary by course, so please refer to the specific course pages of this guide for further details.

HOW LONG DOES THE COURSE LAST?

HNC - 1 yearHND - 2 years (includes HNC year 1)

Joanne WalkerJoanne enrolled on the programme in September 2012 as a significant step on a planned pathway into social work. Studying at degree level is only possible as it is available locally so she is able to integrate it into a busy lifestyle.

Beginning a Foundation Degree was daunting at first and the demands of the programme are really pushing my boundaries.

My outlook on the health and social care landscape feels much more informed; I’m making more useful connections between practice and theory and can better see how research, politics and policy join up and this in turn helps me make sense of, and respond to, complex issues in my my work role.

Wanting to further her career and needing higher level qualifications to make this happen meant that part-time higher level study programme at Bishop Auckland College was the best option.

A workplace role and access to a student loan means Joanne can gain a degree level qualification for considerably less than the cost of full-time study.

“I chose this course for personal development reasons - to enhance and broaden my skills.

For me, the best thing about the course is my peer group. I’m finding being able to tap into their skills and experiences invaluable.

This is a great qualification which actually means something in the industry; if you want to remain employable in the sector you have got to achieve the Level 6 qualification.

It is now a necessity to become professionally qualified to raise the level and quality of work and to also raise the perception of the

Allison Dunn“I heard about this course through work and I found it simple to enrol. The College has a really friendly atmosphere and my tutor is really flexible about my work commitments, especially the work-based visits which make up part of the course.

If I could give anyone a piece of advice about the course it would be to plan your time, although we do lots in class there is an element of self study as well.

I’ve just changed jobs and I’m currently employed as a Social Work Assistant, but I still think the course is applicable to what I’m doing. I’m even thinking of coming back to the College to study Counselling.”
