People planning Jubilee parties in County Durham are being offered advice and support.Durham County Council is backing calls for people across the country to hold Big Lunch Jubilee celebra-tions on June 3rd to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. And the council is urging organisers to get in contact as early as possible for advice on where to hold street parties, who to notify and other issues which need to be considered. In the interest of safety and consideration for others, party organisers are being advised to consider holding their Jubilee

Support for Jubilee celebrations

celebrations off the road, on green space or on a cul-de-sac or back road. But for those planning to go ahead with a party in the street, the council has published useful guidance.• Before applying to close a street or road, organisers should ensure they have the support of residents and businesses which may be affected.• Consider issues such as the need for alternative parking arrangements, pedestrian access and access for emergency vehicles.• If possible avoid organising parties on bus routes. If this is not possible, contact the council for advice before the event is planned.• Anyone planning to sell alcohol at a street party will need to apply separately for a liquor licence.• Live entertainment will need a public entertainments licence – but this does not include music that is for a private party, is not advertised and is not being charged for.• Any damage to the highway or private property may have to be paid for by the party organisers, so the council is recommending that all organisers take out public liability insurance.Cllr Bob Young, Cabinet member for strategic environment and leisure at Durham County Council, said, “The Diamond Jubilee is a very special occasion and we want people to have happy memories of a joyful time. It is important that if people are thinking of holding a street party they contact us as soon as possible so we can help them to ensure they have everything they need in place well beforehand.”To find out more or notify Durham County Council of an event visit www.durham.gov.uk and search ‘jubilee’, email [email protected] or call 0191 372 9188 or 0191 372 9186 and speak to an area co-ordinator.

Durham County Council has published advice for people wanting to hold street parties to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Kris Colledge, aged 34 of Woodlands Road, Bishop Auckland, pleaded guilty at Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court to a charge of possession of cannabis, in Bishop Auckland, on 10th February. The court heard that officers on mobile patrol at around 4.50pm that evening, smelled cannabis in a bin and tried to gain access to the defendant’s home. Initially they were refused

entry but later found two glass jars in the loft containing 48.1 grammes of herbal cannabis. Colledge accepts that he uses cannabis every day and has done for around twenty years and that the drugs were for his personal use. The defendant was fined a total of £165, including costs and the forfeiture and destruction of the cannabis was ordered by magistrates.

Around 285 couples with children in part-time work in the Bishop Auckland constituency could lose around £4,000 a year from this April, says a local MP, following a change to tax credit rules being introduced by the government. Helen Goodman, Labour MP for Bishop Auckland, is urging the Tory-led government to reconsider a change to tax credit rules which means thousands of families will lose all of their working tax credits unless they can significant-ly increase their working hours. The change means that couples with children earning less than around £17,700 will need to increase the number of hours they work from a minimum of 16 to 24 hours per week or they will lose all their working tax credit of £3,870 per year. Government figures

revealed in parliamen-tary answers to Labour’s Shadow Treasury Minister Cathy Jamieson MP show that up to 285 households in Bishop and 212,000 households across the country could lose out. A recent survey by the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Develop-ment found that one in five organisations have cut back on the number of hours that people work as a result of the economic downturn, with just 6 per cent increasing them. Shildon MP Helen Goodman, said, “This is a deeply unfair change from a government that is increasingly out of touch with parents feeling the squeeze and struggling to juggle work and family life. “Raising taxes and cutting spending too far and too fast has seen unem-ployment rise and the economy go into reverse, and many employers are

cutting people’s hours. In this climate, very few people in part-time work will be able to increase their hours by up to 50 per cent at the moment. And for a couple with children losing around £4,000 a year, or £75 a week, from this change could mean going out to work makes no sense.“It tells you everything you need to know about David Cameron and George Osborne that while the banks are getting a tax cut this year they are making life harder for parents in the squeezed middle who are working and trying to do the right thing. “This tax credits bombshell is now just a few weeks away. For many families here in Shildon it means going out to work won’t pay and they’ll be better off on benefits. That makes no economic sense at all. The government urgently needs to think again.”

Local MP fights changes to tax credit rules

Details of Phase 2 of the libraries public consulta-tion are now available from Woodhouse Library and The Town Hall Library. Any member of the public who wishes to comment on the strategy can use the questionnaire available

from the library, or respond online via www.durham.gov.uk/libraryconsultation.“Please take the time to complete a form - as residents of Bishop your opinion really does matter,” said a library spokesperson.

Employers can help put the brakes on poor driving by signing their staff up for a free training course. The one-day session is aimed at companies in the Bishop Auckland, Newton Aycliffe and Shildon areas whose staff drive light commercial vehicles or private or company cars for work activities.Run by Durham County Council and paid for through the government’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund, the course aims to improve driving habits and leave drivers feeling less stressed when behind the wheel. As well as learning important techniques such as how to make better

use of their gears and the importance of keeping the correct distance in order to reduce braking, trainees will also develop more environmentally-friendly ways of driving, which will help reduce fuel consump-tion.Alan Kennedy, Durham County Council’s road safety section manager, said: “We have already delivered safe and fuel efficient driver training courses to a number of companies in Newton Aycliffe, all of which say they have since seen a significant increase in fuel efficiency.“The funding for these courses will continue until March 2015 so there is

plenty of opportunity for companies to take part and make the most of the financial benefits of having safer drivers who also drive in a more environmentally-friendly way.The fully-accredited course is delivered by a team of instructors who are ADI Level 5 or 6, fleet qualified and who are fully-qualified in fuel efficient driver training.Courses can be arranged to suit the needs of individual companies and are based on one instructor for every two trainees. For more information contact Durham County Council’s road safety team on 0191 383 3769 or 0191 383 4728.

Local volunteers and students from Durham University got their hands dirty planting over 600 trees at Broom Mill Farm, West Auckland, last weekend as part of a habitat improvement project run by the Wear Rivers Trust.Using a grant awarded by the Environment Agency the Wear Rivers Trust aims to reduce erosion and enhance wildlife in and around the River Gaunless. Volunteers have already helped clear the stream of debris and used

vegetation to reduce bank side erosion. Saturday was the first of two days where over 600 native broadleaf trees will be planted including Alder, Willow and Silver Birch.Trainee Alistair Lockett, said, “This is a fantastic project to be involved with because you’ll be able to see a big difference within a relatively short period of time. By planting trees along this open stretch of river, we will be providing fish with shelter and in-vertebrates with leaves and woody debris to feed

upon.”Matthew and Tracy Betney, the owners of Broom Mill Farm provided tea and cake to all of the willing volunteers. Ward Bros Skip Hire also provided a skip free of charge to remove the remaining rubbish from the river. If you would like to go and help plant the remaining trees or would like more information about the project contact Project Officer, Steve Hudson on 01388 488867 or email [email protected]

This year’s annual Art Festival for Woodhouse & Bishop Auckland has been hailed a great success.Aimed at encouraging inter-generational partici-pation, the project offered an all-inclusive programme for all ages and abilities to enjoy across venues in the town. With the generous donation £7,000 from the neighbour-hood budgets of Council-lors John Lethbridge and June Lee, the programme was able to provide a wide variety of art-based workshops, spellbinding theatre productions and two exhibitions. So far figures show that over 700, children, adults and families joined in, an increase on last year’s numbers. The week-long competi-tion exhibition housed at Woodhouse Close Church was full of, “colour and

wonder”, said Festival organiser Jane Crawford, “It was a collective display of imagination and honest talent from within our local schools and community groups.” Year 4 pupils at St. Anne's C. E. Primary School were delighted to win the Arts Award for their ‘Bugs in the Forest’ art piece. Miss Crawford added, “The Festival goes from strength to strength and, although funding has been really tough to secure over the last few years, I’m determined that this Festival continues to grow, bringing new ideas each year that will attract as many people in the Bishop Auckland area and beyond as possible.”Daisy Arts works in part-nership with Woodhouse Close Church Community Centre to bring this festival to the community, with

the use of the Woodhouse Close Library, St. Mary’s R.C Church, the local Sure Start Children’s Centres, the Auckland Gate Centre and the Auckland Youth and Community Centre.New for this year was the offer of space at Bishop Auckland Town Hall where a three-week exhibition was displayed at the McGuinness Gallery, showcasing community artwork.Bishop Auckland Mayor, John Lethbridge said, “This Festival is smashing. It really shows the Bishop Auckland spirit at its best. There’s a great deal of ability within our community and we must try to recognise that and this is what this festival offers. It’s in its eighth year now and I feel that it’s really taken off and is something to be proud of and I hope it will continue for many years to come.”

Bishops put in a strong performance to beat local rivals Shildon at Heritage Park on Saturday 18th February. The teams came in level at half time, despite Bishops having been favoured by a strong breeze at their backs. However, Andrew Johnson scored early in the second half and Stephen Salvin secured the points, heading home a corner.Bishops headed to South Tyneside on Tuesday 21st February, to take on

Jarrow Roofing. Although a grim performance matched the surroundings, the 2-4 result made it five wins in a row for the Two Blues.Bishops took an early lead after Jarrow’s defenders bundled in Stephen Salvin’s flicked header, but the home side breached Bishops defence just before half time. It was the first goal conceded by Bishops in over 400 minutes of competitive football. Darren Richardson restored Bishops’ lead

early in the second half and Craig Hodgson made it 3-1. Roofing pulled one back 15 minutes from time, but Bishops held on and Andrew Johnson added a fourth in injury time to continue his prolific scoring record.Bishops’ run of wins ended at Belle Vue Park, Consett, on Saturday 25th February, but their unbeaten run continues after securing a 1-1 draw. Andrew Johnson opened the scoring just before the break but Consett equalised within seconds. Both sides missed chances and had chances saved by two in-form keepers in the second half, and when Bishops ‘scored’ what appeared a legitimate goal minutes from time, it was controversially ruled out by the referee, apparently for an off-the-ball push. The team’s next league action will be away to Spennymoor Town on 7th March.
