A Message from Bangor Career Academy Director e 2020-2021 school year full of pandemic challenges will certainly be a year that won’t be forgotten! While schools across our state and nation were tasked with shiſting to online learning that students could complete remotely from home, Bangor Career Academy experienced minimal transition because online, remote learning is what we’ve always done. Because of our familiarity with the online learning environment, Bangor Career Academy staff provided support across the school district to help with Kickstand training and navigation as well as establishing processes for tracking and managing 2-way contacts with students at all levels. Our biggest hurdle to success was the testing access for our GED students. With the closure of many state entities, GED testing sites were unavailable for most of this school year and have only recently begun to open back up for on-site, in-person GED testing. Despite the challenges, sixteen graduates walked across the stage on May 27th! Of those completers, five received high school diplomas and three were GED completers. Additionally, four adult learners graduated with their GED and four adults received their diplomas. Aside from graduation accomplishments, we had two students who participated in the Michigan Council of Women in Technology (MCWT) website design contest. Both Katriela Serpico and Mikayla Serpico were selected as finalists in the statewide competition. Aſter presenting their website designs through a live virtual presentation, Mikayla Serpico was selected as the winner for her high school division. e girls competed against 102 other students from 38 Michigan schools. Another outstanding student, Travis Post, was recognized for his hard work in the welding program at VB Tech in May when his program instructor awarded him the honor of Tech Student of the Year. We are extremely proud of the hard work of all Bangor Career Academy students and congratulate them on a job well done during the unusual year. As we look ahead to the 2021-2022 school year, we are excited to return to a more “normal” looking school year. e well-being of our students remains a top priority and we are working with VBISD to increase access to mental health clinicians that can help support students’ needs. Also new for the fall of 2021 will be new learning platforms for our online curriculum. Apex Learning has a proven track record for engaging students in the curriculum while presenting content in a way that is easy to understand. Career Academy students in 6-12th grades will experience the Apex Learning system while students in K-5th grades will have a variety of options that feature a simple user online interface and printed workbook materials so that screen time for lower elementary students is minimized. e GED program through Bangor Career Academy will also have some enhanced features going into the 2021-2022 school year including 1-on-1 instructional support and a pre-GED program option. I really want students and their families to enjoy their summer together! Take time to enjoy the beautiful Michigan weather and take advantage of the nearby parks, waterways and festivals. We’ll see you in the fall!
