BECOME AN EXPERT IN YOUR MAJORBecome an expert in an academic discipline known as a major. This is a given for all accredited universities around the world, but this is also where the academic model for some schools begins and ends.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNINGExperiential learning accounts for 25 percent of the academic hours at HPU. Students are educated in the classroom, but also outside of the classroom with labs, studios, career shadowing, internships, study abroad and in businesses gaining real-world experience within their disciplines.

DEVELOPMENT OF LIFE SKILLSOur investment in each student’s success goes much deeper than their discipline – we are committed to arming students with the life skills necessary to be successful within their career and daily interactions. From how to initiate conversation on an airplane to how to interview over a meal within a restaurant, we use common exchanges and interactions as educational opportunities.

MODEL VALUES, BUILD CHARACTERIt is in our DNA that we graduate learned young people grounded in sound moral decision-making framed with good character.

High Point University cultivates excellence and places you immediately onto a path to greatness. How will you be extraordinary?

hat distinguishes HPU graduates is that you spend four years developing the life skills necessary to merge the classroom knowledge and experiences

you have earned to make you competitive within the global marketplace. It begins with the President’s Seminar on Life Skills and continues in more than 100 different ways throughout your four years at HPU. At the age of 17, HPU President Dr. Nido Qubein, came to the U.S. with little money and a limited command of the English language. Since then, his achievements have earned him the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, induction into the Horatio Alger Society of Distinguished Americans and placement within the National Speakers Association Hall of Fame. Dr. Qubein is a nationally recognized speaker, author and consultant.

President’s Seminar on Life SkillsThe President’s Seminar on Life Skills is an opportunity for every first-year student to reap the benefits of Dr. Qubein’s lifetime of learning and continual achievement. This required course taken your first semester teaches time management, energy management, communication skills, financial literacy and achieving success and significance in your life. highpoint.edu/presidentseminar

President’s Seminar for SeniorsThe President’s Seminar for Seniors enhances personal, academic and professional development by encouraging seniors to learn how to successfully transition into the corporate arena, examine the fundamentals of professionalism and interviewing, and study the value of stewardship and community engagement.

“ High Point University has strengthened the confidence that I have in myself and my dreams by pushing me outside of my comfort zone and challenging me to be a better student, leader, friend and young professional. I had the privilege of being accepted to my number one choice Physical Therapy school, and I wholeheartedly attribute that moment of success to the stellar faculty members, innovative facilities and unceasing inspiration that HPU provided during my time here.”

— Nicole Karlesky; exercise science major; from Charlotte, NC; Medical University of South Carolina

“ Because of HPU’s location and proximity to downtown High Point, home of the largest home furnishings market in the world, I’ve been able to build my résumé based on High Point Furniture Market positions (one with High Point Market Authority and most recently the showroom Codarus) and with two internships: Barbour Spangle Design in High Point and June DeLugas Interiors in Clemmons, NC. Receiving a Bachelor of Science in interior design was one of the most important factors in choosing which college I attended.”

— Michelle Scirica; interior design major; from Smithtown, NY; Rogers Design Group

SUCCESSFUL YOUNG ALUMNI

“ High Point University’s Phillips School of Business Selling Club helped introduce me to Aetna at the International Collegiate Sales Competition (ICSC) in Orlando, Fla. this past November. I utilized the HPU career fair during my junior year to secure an internship that provided me with valuable job-related and personal tools which I still use today.”

— Marcus Cromwell; business administration major; from Edgewater, MD; Aetna

“ HPU really lives up to its mission statement — an extraordinary education in an inspiring environment with caring people. I was able to pursue my dream of a double major in biology and mathematics because of these three qualities. My professors constantly supported and challenged me in and outside of the classroom. The facilities and classrooms were an incubator to encourage me to do my best and to refine my skills. The Summer in Science (SuRPS) Research Program at HPU opened my eyes to an entirely different world of possibilities — one that I am now going into as I begin my future at a research intensive Ph.D. program at Vanderbilt University. Every dream, including mine, is feasible at HPU.”

— Andrea Perreault; biology and mathematics major; from Neshanic Station, NJ; Vanderbilt University

Ken Fobian was selected as the first place winner and recipient of $7,000 for his business plan, Resistance LLC, at HPU’s fifth annual Business Plan Competition. “I have that entrepreneurial passion and I have always wanted to start my own company,” says Fobian. “I am going to pursue the company upon graduating and it feels great that all of the hard work paid off. I am grateful for the help from everyone at HPU and the motivation from my friends and family. This is a huge help and a big step. I am very excited.” — Ken Fobian; business administration major; from Oakland, NJ; Resistance, LLC

COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH

tudents in all academic disciplines are given the opportunity to partner with professors and engage in research,

scholarship and creative endeavors as early as their freshman year in order to build a compelling résumé to help them stand out to future employers and graduate schools.

Undergraduate Research and Creative Works The Undergraduate Research and Creative Works program encourages and supports collaborative partnerships between nurturing faculty mentors and enterprising students. Critical inquiry, brainstorming, debate and mutual discovery intertwine, leading over time to the production of finished works suitable for publication, exhibition, or presentation in either professional or public forums.

HPU physics students had their proposal accepted to NASA’s Micro-g Neutral Buoyancy Experience Design Team program. They designed and built a device for astronauts to chip off samples of an asteroid while exploring its surface.

Thirteen students presented their research along with faculty mentors at the Big South Undergraduate Research Symposium.

The Survey Research Center The High Point University Survey Research Center (SRC) conducts high-quality public affairs and social science research using a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods. Student work and ideas are at the core of the SRC’s approach to pursuing interdisciplinary research projects and communicating its findings to the public. The HPU Poll reports methodological details in accordance with the standards set out by the American Association for Public Opinion Research’s Transparency Initiative, and the SRC is a charter member of the initiative.

The history of the former William Penn High School, the City of High Point’s African-American high school before desegregation, was retold. Conducting hundreds of hours of research, HPU students in a service learning history course called “The History Detectives” developed a website documenting findings from The William Penn Project.

Junior Laura Santiago published an article in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, recognized as one of the top orthopedic journals in the world. The article is the product of research she conducted at HPU on the most accurate way to diagnose lower body stress fractures.
