Higashiyama refers to the hills that run along Kyoto̓ s

eastern edge. The area is believed to be guarded by

one of the four guardians of Kyoto – Seiryu – a sacred

dragon. The mountains in Higashiyama are

collectively called “Higashiyama Sanju-Roppo”,

a mountain range of 36 gently sloped mountains

to the east viewed from the Rakuchu.

Park Hyatt Kyoto is located in the heart of Higashiyama,

close to a number of world heritage sites such as

Kodai-ji Temple and Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

Ninenzaka Slope is an iconic street in Kyoto and considered as one of the main attractions of the city for its beautiful scenery. The stone paved streets are lined with traditional Japanese buildings, shops, cafes and inns, and are surrounded by several famous landmarks.

Koto ni moeru kai is a group of local businesses in Higashiyama who wish to preserve the Ninenzaka Ichinenzaka neighborhood which are iconic streets of Kyoto. More than 60 stores have participated in the group’s activities as of August 2020.

清水寺への参拝道として作られた、二寧坂。瓦屋根が連なり、緩やかな石畳の坂が続く美しい古都の街並みは、市の重要伝統的建造物群保存地区に指定されています。個性豊かお店が続いています。

古都に燃える会は、二寧坂・一念坂の商店主や東山の人々が集まり、「二寧坂・一念坂界隈をこよなく愛し、守り育てる活動」をしています。2020年8月現在、60店舗が加盟しています。

Yasaka Shrine is a Shinto sanctuary in the Gion District of Kyoto well known for its summer festival, the Gion Matsuri. The Matsuri dates back over a thousand years and involves a procession with massive floats and hundreds of participants.

平安時代以前から祇園のシンボルである、八坂神社。豪華絢爛な山鉾と共に街中を巡行する祇園祭は、京都の夏を代表する千百年の伝統を誇る八坂神社の祭礼です。

Kodai-ji is an outstanding temple in Higashiyama with many buildings designated as Important Cultural Properties. They feature richly decorated interiors and are surrounded by beautiful Zen gardens.

高台寺には、国指定名勝の庭園をはじめ、重要文化財に指定されている建物が多く残っています。春には儚く美しいしだれ桜が、秋には一面に紅葉が咲き誇ります。

Hanamikoji-Dori Street is the main street of Gion that runs north to south for approximately 1km. On the south side of Shijo-Dori Street is one of the most famous spots in Kyoto and some of best streets for walking around in a Kimono.

情緒溢れる石畳とお茶屋の家並みが続く、約1km続く祇園の街のメインストリートとなる花見小路。歩いていると、舞妓さんや芸妓さんと出会えるかもしれません。

Located in a grand building on the corner of Shijo-Dori and Kawabata-Dori in Gion, Minamiza is Kyoto’s premier Kabuki theatre, registered as a cultural property and a national historic site.

歌舞伎発祥の地である鴨川沿いの四条河原で、広く親しまれている南座。この建物は、国の登録有形文化財であり、京都市の歴史的意匠建造物にも指定されています。

The Yasaka Pagoda, also known as Hokan-ji Temple, is a 5-story tall pagoda located in the Higashiyama district and is considered by many as the landmark of Higashiyama.

The Kiyomizu-dera Temple is located on a peak on the Higashiyama mountain range and is famous for its wooden stage that seemingly protrudes into the air. The temple and its stage offer a spectacular view of Sakura (cherry blossoms) and red maple leaves that erupt in a sea of color in spring and autumn.

Entoku-in Temple is is the house where Masako Kitanomandokoro (Nene), the wife of the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, lived the rest of her life for 19 years until her death. The guests can enjoy a scenic garden called “Kitaniwa”.

戦国の武将・豊臣秀吉の正妻である北政所政子(通称ねね)

が没するまでの19年間の余生を送り、終焉の地となったのが「圓徳院」。名勝庭園「北庭」があります。
