COMMITTEE MEETING UPDATES, NEWS & MEMBER INFORMATION TO WBDA MEMBERS
Waiuku Business & Development Association
Hi everyone
P arade time is upon us and Vanessa and I are busy putting the final touches on
things.Unfortunately float numbers
are slightly down on last year and the take up from businesses and schools has been disappointing. Even releasing the theme and date in January to give people a whole year to plan hasn’t seemed to have made much of an impact. Hopefully we will all realise the importance of this iconic event continuing and get into the spirit and get a float in next year.
For all those that are entering a float – you will need to be up at the Waiuku Sports Park with your floats ready for judging at 12.30pm. The tuck shop will be open for business and have a great variety of food for purchase. The parade will commence at 2pm and should be all done and dusted by 3pm.
Bowen Street will be closed off from 9am so any businesses operating on Saturday, please ask staff to park outside Bowen if they want to leave before 4pm.
Mix 'n' MingleA huge thank you to Sam Wulff for
Extended Business HoursObviously over the crazy time leading up to Christmas we have some businesses that are extending their hours to cater for the increase in business. The Goodness Grocer would like to advise you that they have extended their hours leading up to Christmas. They are now open from 9-6pm Monday to Friday and 10-4pm on Saturday and Sunday.
New Business WelcomeYou may have noticed we have a new store in Waiuku. Natures Synergy trading as Awaken Store is situated at 64 Queen Street next to LK Café. It is a retail store and wellness room for holistic therapies selling ethical wares for the home, body and soul. Run by Chanel McGibbon, we wish her well in her business venture.
Kentish Carpark Toilet MuralHopefully many of you have noticed the mural taking shape on the Kentish carpark toilet block. This was a really boring building that the Business Association identified as needing a spruce up to help beautify the area. The artist Brigita Bell has really understood our brief showcasing our heritage past but still being a little quirky. She hopes to have it completed
hosting the final Mix 'n' Mingle for 2018. The food and hospitality was fantastic. It was great to meet more of the businesses in the Business Park and allow the 100 strong attendance to have a good catch up before we break for Christmas. For those of you that don’t know, Sam Wulff is a great supporter of Waiuku business and our community even though he doesn’t live here, and has been the major sponsor for the Blast to the Past for the past 2 years.
At the Mix n Mingle I had a good conversation with Kym Maynard, Manager of Waiuku Family Support Network, who with her team are doing a fantastic job in this crazy and extremely busy time heading into Christmas. She mentioned unfortunately, they have had a huge demand for food parcels and their pantry is virtually empty. I put a challenge out to the attendees and would like to extend it to all businesses and their staff in Waiuku to each donate 5 items of non-perishable food products to the Family Support in their time of need. Christmas is a time for giving so I really hope you and your staff get onboard with this initiative. You can either bring your donations down to the Information Centre or better still take it up to Family Support yourself. Lets look after our own!!

Sandspit Boardwalk OpeningWe are going to have a small opening for the Waiuku Sandspit Boardwalk on Saturday 22nd December at 10am until 11am. Come on down and see the amazing upgrade of the area and learn about stage 2 which will be commencing after Christmas. The tide will be in so grab the kids, bring your togs and jump off the new jetty. The Lions will have the BBQ there also.
Flower Bikes for Town CentreAs you know I am all up for beautifying the street and Papakura have just completed their flower bikes. I think this is a gorgeous idea and would love to replicate it. If you have any old vintage looking bikes lying around that you would like to donate or even
paint up and have in front of your own shop please let me know.
This is the last Friday Flash for the year and will resume late January.
On behalf of Vanessa, myself and our Waiuku Business & Development Association committee we would like to thank you all for your economic support for our town centre over the last 12 months and wish you all a safe and prosperous New Year.

AppendixProposed Freedom Camping in Vehicles Bylaw - Now open for consultation
We are seeking feedback from you on the proposed Freedom Camping in Vehicles Bylaw. Consultation is open until 5.00pm on Monday 18 February 2019.
We are asking for your views on:
• key aspects of the proposed new bylaw• replacing legacy council bylaw provisions that managed freedom camping with the proposed
new bylaw• questions specific to areas identified in the proposed new bylaw.
How we can improve the management of freedom camping in Auckland
Freedom camper numbers are growing throughout New Zealand. Our research has found that Auckland does not have enough places for freedom campers to go.
This causes conflict when there is over-crowding and illegal camping in unsuitable areas.
We have been looking at reducing this conflict by providing more suitable areas for campers to go.
The Freedom Camping Act 2011:
• allows freedom camping on land controlled or managed by the council• sets what the council can do to manage freedom camping.
Our proposed new bylaw
Through our proposed new bylaw, we can identify the places where:
• we should prohibit freedom camping• we need to set restrictions to manage freedom camping.
The bylaw can include rules for both Auckland Council and Auckland Transport managed land. It will also give us the power to issue infringement fines. Our enforcement officers do not currently have infringement powers.
Prohibiting and restricting freedom camping
The Freedom Camping Act 2011 allows us to prohibit freedom camping in an area or put restrictions in place only if it is necessary to protect the area, protect the health and safety of people who may visit the area or protect access to the area.
It does not allow us to ban freedom camping everywhere in Auckland.
You can view more information, including maps of proposed prohibited and restricted areas by visiting the Have Your Say Website.
