TENNESSEE CHAPTER HISTORY

•  November 18, 1952 twenty-five people met in the auditorium of the nurses home of Methodist Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. The organization began as a chapter of the American Accountants Association

•  In 1968, the American Association of Hospital Accountants changed its name to the Hospital Financial Management Association.

•  The name changed to Healthcare Financial Management Association in 1982.

TENNESSEE CHAPTER: OUR MISSION

•  The TN Chapter of HFMA works continuously to meet the educational needs of healthcare financial professionals in Tennessee. We will:

•  Provide professional development opportunities via education, information, peer interaction and certification.

•  Influence the development of financial management policies and principals.

•  Establish and promote the highest professional and ethical standards.

TENNESSEE CHAPTER: MEMBERSHIP

•  Today 1062 people are current members of the Tennessee chapter.

•  An Advanced Member is a person who has earned 20 Founder’s Award point for membership and volunteer service. Must be a member for 2 years, in good standing, have participated on at least 1 committee for either a conference or a STAR committee for 1 year. Have attended at least 2 conferences.

•  A Student Member is a person who is a full-time college student at an educational institution which has an organized body of students.

•  Life Membership is an honor conferred by the National Board of Directors. National Life Membership is conferred to recognize meritorious service to HFMA.

TNHFMA COMMITTEE STRUCTURE

•  The Tennessee Chapter of HFMA is managed by nine (9) committees, designated collectively as S.T.A.R. (Strategic Teams For Action and Response). 

•  S.T.A.R. committees are charged with managing a certain aspect of the Chapter to fulfill the chapter's mission and vision. 

•  The committees meet at the three major institutes and, as needed, by teleconference. 

•  Each committee is chaired by a member of the Chapter's board, and each chair has a co-chair who is being mentored to succeed the chair.

S.T.A.R. COMMITTEES

Sponsorship Objective: Build a strong base of financial support for the chapter by recruiting and maintaining relationships with Corporate Sponsors. Responsibilities: Coordinate opportunities and events related to the solicitation and receipt of funds from Corporate Sponsors. Chairperson: Jess Stewart Co-Chairperson: Jack Abernathy

Member Services

Objective: Pursue an active plan of recruitment for prospective members, assimilate new and old members into the chapter and encourage continued membership of current members. Responsibilities: Actively monitor membership fluctuation throughout the HFMA chapter year. Conduct recruitment and retention programs. Plan new member events and welcome new members. Leadership Development Objective: Stimulate growth for the chapter and for individuals by encouraging members to become involved and mentoring them to become leaders. Responsibilities: Create opportunities for potential leaders to learn and build their leadership skills. Certification

Objective: Promote the benefits of certification via the Certified Healthcare Financial Professionals (CHFP), Fellow Healthcare Financial Management Association (FHFMA) designations, CRCR and the CPAR certification. Responsibilities: Provide coaching and examination opportunities for certification candidates. Educate and encourage eligible members to become certified and maintain the content and integrity of the study manual (online-no manuals), administer examinations, initiate coaching sessions, plan and conduct award ceremonies.

Programs and Education Objective: Coordinate all chapter meetings and programs, including four annual educational sessions and additional regional session each year. Responsibilities: Coordinate yearly education events to insure they do not conflict with THA, National HFMA and Region 5 events. Appoint regional program committees to work with Regional V.P.’s to develop program schedules and content. Projects/Yerger Planning Objective: Develop and implement educational and informative projects designed to have significant impact on customers, providers and third-party purchasers of healthcare. Responsibilities: Select project(s) that can be brought to completion based on recommendations from chapter leadership. Oversee the writing and preparation of Helen M. Yerger Award submissions. Publications Objective: Ensure that timely communication occurs to Chapter members through publication of Chapter newsletters to keep members informed of current issues and Chapter activities. Responsibilities: Ensure that Chapter newsletter is published and distributed at a minimum of four times during the chapter year. Encourage members to contribute articles and photographs for publication. Chairperson: Kennon Askew

Scholarship Objective: Develop, coordinate and administer the Gloria Adams Scholarship fund. Responsibilities: Administer scholarship program as approved by the Board of Directors. Objective: Maintain the Chapter web site in a professional and current manner and promote the use of the Chapter and National web sites. Responsibilities: Maintain basic Chapter information, calendar of events, information updates and recommend additional uses for the web site. Chairperson: Brad Adams, CPA

NATIONAL AWARDS

The Robert M. Shelton Award for Sustained Chapter Excellence - The Shelton Award is presented each year to the chapter judged as displaying exemplary service to members over a sustained period of the immediate past five years. The award, unveiled in 1979 in honor of Robert Shelton's long-standing contributions to the Association, was presented for the first time in 1980.

NATIONAL AWARDS

Helen M. Yerger Special Recognition Award - The Helen M. Yerger Award recognizes outstanding chapter performance in the categories of Collaboration, Education, Improvement, Innovation, Member Communications, Member Service, and Membership Recruitment and Retention.

CHAPTER AWARDS

•  Henry Hottum Award- This award, named in honor of the first president of the Tennessee Chapter-HFMA, is presented each year to the member selected by the Chapter’s Board of Directors, who had made significant contributions to the Chapter in the field of accounting and business office practices.

•  Ira M. Lane Award - The Ira M. Lane, Jr. Award (previously Director’s Award) is given for sustained services to the Tennessee Chapter HFMA, in the professional development and advancement of chapter membership and have improved the public image of the healthcare industry. In addition, the award is given in recognition of contributions to the achievement of the Chapter’s goals and objectives.  The 1993-94 Board of Directors voted to rename the Director’s Award, the Ira M. Lane, Jr. Award, to honor the retiring Tennessee Hospital Association’s president for his unfailing support to HFMA over his thirty-three year tenure with THA.

NATIONAL CERTIFICATION

•  HFMA’s certification programs lead to the designation Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP) and Fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (FHFMA).

•  Why get certified? Survey results indicate a

relationship between certification and career advancement. Certified members of HFMA tend to earn a higher annual salary and are more likely to be hired for upper-level positions in healthcare finance.

CERTIFIED REVENUE CYCLE REPRESENTATIVE

•  Healthcare rules are becoming more complex, customers are demanding more, and staff is being held at a higher level of accountability than at any other time. Today’s revenue cycle staff must have a broader understanding of the entire revenue cycle and how it influences the financial outcomes of the healthcare organization. HFMA’s Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR) program provides healthcare organizations with a means to ensure that their revenue cycle staff has the body of knowledge necessary to meet these demands.

TENNESSEE CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP

•  The Gloria Adams Memorial Scholarship was named for a past president , 1996-1997.

•  The funds are used to provide scholarships to students pursuing a degree pertinent to healthcare financial management.

•  Scholarships are available for members – or the children and grandchildren of members.

•  Money is raised through donations and businesses. A major fund raising event is a golf tournament held annually in Nashville.

TENNESSEE CHAPTER PUBLICATIONS

•  Four newsletters are produced annually. This newsletter, the Volunteer Voice, includes articles related to healthcare financial management positions, chapter news, and member photos. Members are encouraged to write articles for publication in this newsletter. These are sent out electronically.

•  An annual membership directory is produced.
