MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH HERNDON, VIRGINIA FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT April 2, 2017

In Bap sm we are reborn as children of God, made mem-bers of His Church, and heirs to the Kingdom of Heaven. With this in mind, we welcome these children of God who were bap-tized March 26, 2017:

Paige Quinn Kostelnik daughter of Matthew & Stephanie; Samuel Bennett Kostelnik son of Matthew & Stephanie; Eli Quoc Ly son of Duy & Kather ine

Peace and good! What is yours to do this Lent? Perhaps this week is a good week to turn our attention to our prayer lives and how we approach God in our daily lives. There are many different ways to approach prayer, this week we focus on the spiritual practice of centering prayer. The spiritual discipline we focus upon this week is centering prayer. We learn the following insights regarding centering prayer:

Centering prayer as it is practiced in the United States to-day comes from the work of Cistercian monks M. Basil Pennington, O.C.S.O, and Thomas Keating, O.C.S.O., two leading advocates of the centering prayer movement, which began at St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Massachu-setts, during the 1970s. The seeds of centering prayer, however, date back to the prayer practices of the desert fathers and mothers who lived in the third and fourth centuries. For much of Christian history, the tradition of contemplative prayer was preserved and promoted within the Eastern churches. More recently, the Western churches have enjoyed a resurgence of the contemplative tradition through works like The Cloud of Unknowing, written by an anonymous fourteenth-century author, and the writings of Carmelite mystics John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila. (2010)

The Gospels challenge us to respond to Jesus’ invitation, “Remain here and keep watch with me” (Mt 26:38b). Each of us have the opportunity to spend time before the Blessed Sac-rament. These opportunities may be 10 minutes before or after Mass, a holy hour, weekly Eucharistic Adoration on Wednes-day evenings, First Friday Eucharistic Adoration, or Benedic-tion. Whatever time you find to spend before the Eucharist allows you to experience the blessings and graces of God. Mother Teresa shared: “Night and day, he is there. If you real-ly want to grow in love, come back to the Eucharist, come back to that Adoration.” May our prayer experiences before the Blessed Sacrament be transformative, contemplative, and empower us to become more like Christ. The Parish staff wishes to thank the following parish minis-tries: We wish to thank the parishioners who have made their pledg-es and donations to the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA). Your pledges and donations will assist the Bishop in his com-mitment to provide the means for the diocese to share the “works of mercy” to those in need. For the parishioners who are still reflecting upon their pledge/donation to the BLA, we invite you to reflect upon the ways in which the BLA embraces the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. As of this date, St. Joseph Catholic Church has made 84% of its BLA assess-ment. We thank our parishioners for their support of the Parish Facility Fund Collection. Your contr ibutions assist us in maintaining and caring for our parish buildings and grounds. Know that we are grateful for your prayers and financial sup-port. We wish to thank our parishioners who joined us for the Fish Fry and Stations of the Cross this past Fr iday. A special thanks to our Director of the Kitchen and Events. Another spe-cial thanks to the members of the Knights of Columbus who hosted the Fish Fry and assisted in the cooking and serving of the meal. Many blessings. We wish to thank the friars of our formation community of Saint Louis Friary (DC) for leading the Stations of the Cross for us this past weekend. We also thank our parishioners who have been joining us for the celebration of the Stations of the Cross during Lent.

Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA) 2017

This year we have a new Bishop, Bishop Michael Burbidge, so it’s a good opportunity to remind ourselves who the Bishop is, why he is asking for our help, and why we should respond. The Catechism tells us that the Bishops have a duty to care for the poor, those persecuted for the faith and for missionaries throughout the world. But the Catechism is also clear that the Bishop carries out this duty not alone, but by extending the Church to help in that mission. It is his duty to invite the whole people of God to assist him in the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. The BLA certainly benefits those who receive the care, assis-tance, counseling and education funded by the Appeal. But just as importantly, it benefits us by allowing us to participate in these works of mercy. By extending us and connecting us with those in need, the Bishop is strengthening the whole Mystical Body. As of this date, the parish has reached 84% of its BLA goal. For our parishioners still discerning their BLA pledge/donation, we invite you to consider the following. We ask you to please review carefully the printed materials you received in the mail from the Diocese, which highlight the many programs supported by the BLA throughout the diocese, including:

• The Diocese's Office of Vocations • Support for our elderly clergy in their retirement • The Diocese's Office for Family Life • The Spanish Apostolate • Catholic Charities and Catholic Education

The Church teaches that the Bishops are the direct successors of the apostles and that “whoever listens to them is listening to Christ…” There are many good reasons to support the BLA. But the most compelling one is simply that Jesus, through our Bishop, is asking us to. We hope you will help us make Bishop Burbidge’s first Len-ten Appeal a successful one. Thank you for your continued generosity, and God bless. As you consider the different spiritual disciplines for the Len-ten Season, we invite you to join our parishioners in praying of the rosary after the 6:30 am Mass (M-F), and before 8:00 am Mass each day (M-Sat.), and before the 8:30 Sunday Mass. Many blessings!

• 10 minutes before or after Mass;

• a private holy hour during the week;

• weekly Eucharistic Adoration on Wednesday evenings (7:00 - pm. - 9:00 pm). Please note that there will be no Eucharistic Adoration on Wednesday, April 12, 2017. There will be Eucharistic Adoration following the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday;

• First Friday Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction (Mass at 7:30 pm followed by Eucharistic Adoration until the 8:00 am on Saturday).
