Stay Safe: Cold Weather and Fall Prevention

The holidays should be about togetherness and cheer, but an unanticipated fall can quickly ruin this happy time of year. With the cold weather and icy conditions outside, it’s especially important to stay vigilant and do everything you can to prevent falls – both inside and out. Make sure you have the proper shoes. Good traction is essential, so check the heels and soles of your boots and shoes to ensure they are in good condition. You may also want to consider special anti-

skid shoes to further prevent slips and falls. When coming inside, clean off your shoes to get rid of any excess snow or ice. Be careful when getting into or out of vehicles. Hold securely to a door or another person to avoid slipping. Stay active. Maintaining strong muscles and bones is an important component of preventing falls. Consider joining an indoor walking group or one of our fitness classes.

Make sure you are getting enough vitamin D and calcium, which are critical to keeping your bones and muscles healthy and strong.

Going gluten-free doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy your favorite baked goods this holiday season. Even if you are just trying to limit your intake of white flour (which is heavily processed and low in nutritional benefits), there are an array of other options you can choose, depending on your needs. Nut-based flours are some of the most popular alternative flours, and they

are great for Christmas cookies! Almond flour is a common choice, but chestnut, walnut and filbert flours are also good options. Legume flours, like soy, chickpea, fava bean and peanut, are a good source of protein, iron, zinc and magnesium. Chickpea flour, for instance, can be great in a chocolate chip cookie! Seed flours are another great option. Buckwheat

can be used for things like crepes, pancakes and tarts, while millet can be used in combination with regular flours for muffins and breads.
