“All good things must come to an end,” is a phrase we often employ when faced with the completion of some event that has been deemed especially nice or enjoyable. We find it true as Greg Milton’s time as our Ministerial Intern comes to conclusion. Hasn’t it been a fantastic experience? Greg’s appointment provided us unique opportunities to grow and stretch. We have benefited from his extraordinary range of talents, his enthusiasm and energy, his inquisitiveness and spontaneity. We will surely miss the wonderful prayer moments led from the piano and other contributions to worship. We will continue to profit from the further relationships he has opened throughout our community. We will never again see The Lion King nor reach down to pull up our socks, without remembering Greg. I believe Greg has also benefited greatly from being with us. He has gained valuable insights into new-to-him forms of worship, planning patterns, and ministerial leadership styles. He has been blessed by people who received him with open minds and hearts, looking beyond the distinct colors of our skin and seeking to know one another’s hearts. I am proud of Greg and of this congregation for breaking new ground and developing a new capacity to be the salt and light of the world. Come to think of it, this is a very good thing that need not and must not come to an end. Indeed, we all really are a part of the “circle of life.” Greg will always be a part of our circle, and the circle will not be broken.

Travis Whaley is a Master of Music in Organ Performance Candidate from the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University (Bloomington). Travis is the grandson of Peggy and Julian Whaley and the son of Deck and Jennifer Whaley, all formerly a part of the First Baptist Church family. He will present his degree recital as a “dry run” prior to presenting it to complete his degree requirements. Come and invite friends to enjoy an evening of great music!

FBC as an Encourager Church and Our New Spring Mission Offering

2018 Goal: $3,000

Becoming an Encourager Church in support of Jon and Tanya Parks In the coming years the Mission Coordinating Committee of FBC will shepherd us through the process of becoming an encourager church for Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) Field Personnel Jon and Tanya Parks. What is an Encourager Church? An encourager church is simply a church that seeks to establish a deep and transformative relationship with missionaries in the field. For FBC that means we will seek to be a church that supports the Parks in a holistic way, not just through financial support (although that is important!). We will seek to support them through prayer, financial support, physical presence, and consistent communication. We will seek to transform as we are also transformed by them and their ministry in Slovakia. Who are Jon and Tanya Parks?

Jon and Tanya Parks serve among the Roma community in Košice, Slovakia and were commissioned as Field Personnel by the CBF in June of 2011. Jon and Tanya seek to provide opportunities for Roma to gain skills that help lift them out of cycles of poverty and oppression through teaching English and leading clubs at a school for Roma children and teaching English classes around the city and region. The Parks desire to see Gospel transformation within Roma

communities so that unheard Roma voices may be amplified and they can find their place in the global community and God’s Kingdom. Many Roma, despite their status as Europe’s largest ethnic minority group — especially in Slovakia and other Eastern European countries —experience discrimination and live in generational cycles of poverty and dependence. Jon and Tanya believe that education and the Gospel can make the biggest difference in forming a new future for Roma communities. The first step to becoming an Encourager Church: Our new Spring Mission Offering How is this different from the offering we collect in December? Over the past few years the CBF has transitioned how their field personnel are funded. Each December we collect the Offering for Global Missions (OGM) which funds the field personnel’s mission presence. Mission presence includes salary, retirement, insurance, housing, and child education support. The OGM does not fund field personnel’s mission programming. Mission programming includes the daily ministry expenses of field personnel such as curriculum, travel and event costs, and funding for projects. How will the Spring Mission Offering Support Jon and Tanya Parks? Our Spring Mission Offering will go directly to supporting the mission programming of the Parks in Slovakia. We have a lofty goal of $3,000 but we believe that we can meet that goal and even exceed that goal in support of the Kingdom work the Parks are doing among the Roma community!

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS

Applications for various scholarships administered by The First Baptist Church are available in the church office. All scholarship applications must be submitted to the church office by Sunday, July 1, 2018. Applications received after July 1, 2018 will be considered ineligible to receive a scholarship. Please note that the transcript must be an official transcript from your school. In order for an application to be considered complete, all documents listed on the front of the application must be submitted. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Several of our scholarships are offered to graduating high school seniors, including the First Baptist Scholarship, the Briley Scholarship, and the Watkins Scholarship. Other scholarships are focused on current college and graduate students, including the Burton and Gary Scholarships. There is also a scholarship fund specifically for people preparing for lives in various kinds of Christian ministry.
