She also won a Golden Globe Award for the same role. But Tilly, in an unusual step, decided to give it all up and retire from acting, leaving the fame and fortune behind as she moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, in Canada. With three kids and a successful movie career, many wondered if Tilly would have regrets. “None at all,” she says. “I wanted so much for my kids to have a normal life, to have the stability and security that I never had growing up. I put all of my efforts into being a good mother and I never wanted anything more than that. The movie career just allowed me the flexibility in terms of money to be the kind of mom that I wanted to be.” Tilly turned to writing instead and published a memoir and a novel. Both books reflect her struggle as a young woman in a tough business like Hollywood. Her youngest child is now 16 years old. Tilly says that she never questions what she could have done differently, “Hollywood isn’t as glamorous as we think. It’s a lot of work and there are different kinds of pressures there that I had a hard time dealing with. Now when my son stays out late at a party, I never have to wonder if it is because I spent too much time worrying about my next movie role. What does it take to give up the Hollywood life and leave it behind? Actor Meg Tilly can answer that question. Tilly, who starred in several movies in the 1980s, was at the height of her career when she was nominated in 1985 for an Oscar for her role in Agnes of God.

I know as a mother that I did the best that I could.” Multiple choice

[Reference: Reading 2.1]

[A] The sense of smell is one of the least understood of the five senses and recently scientists have been looking into how memory, scent, and emotion are connected in the human brain. Most people know that the sense of smell is closely connected to memory. Few people, however, realize that the sense of smell is not any more strongly connected to memory than any of the other senses. However, there is an emotional component to memories associated with smell that the other senses are lacking. For example, you might see a photograph of a loved one who has passed away and think fondly of that person. But if that person used a particular type of lotion and you smell that same lotion, you might suddenly feel like crying. More than this, people who have lost their sense of smell due to injury or illness report a high level of emotional loss afterwards. This indicates to scientists that emotion, memory, and sense of smell are all very closely connected in the brain.

[B] Many scientists are also conducting interesting research into how scent and sleep are connected. One famous study examined how scent and memory are connected during sleep. First, medical students viewed some colored and numbered cards, trying to remember the order in which they were presented. While they were viewing the cards and trying to remember the order, the students were forced to smell the strong scent of roses through specially designed masks. Next, the students took a nap. While sleeping, the researchers let only some of the students smell a strong rose scent. After that, these same students were given the scent again as they woke up. Finally, all of the students were given the card memorization tests again. Students who had been exposed to the rose scent during and after sleep scored much better on memorizing the order of the numbers and colors on the cards. The results of this study and others like it are contributing to new discoveries about the connections between scent, memory, and emotion. Multiple choice

Reading

[Reference: Reading 4.1]

[A] Archaeologists in China have discovered the fossilized remains of what may have been the largest bird to have ever lived. The birdlike dinosaur, given the scientific name Gigantoraptor erlianensis, weighed around 3,000 lbs, or 1.5 tons, and towered above all other creatures who were thought to have lived at that time at nearly 16 feet tall. It lived about 70 million years ago and, according to scientists, had no teeth but

Page 21: Hemispheres 3 ( 1-6)

was probably feathered as birds today are. Scientists also speculate that the animal whose remains were found was quite young at the time of its death, so a full-grown adult may have been substantially larger. They also believe that its discovery complicates long-held theories about how modern-day birds evolved.

[B] "We thought previously that we had a relatively simple pattern—as dinosaurs became smaller in size they became more birdlike," says Xing Xu of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Beijing. "Now, after the discovery of Gigantoraptor, things get more complicated.” Scientists used to believe that a certain species of two-legged creatures, theropods, eventually evolved into birds, though these creatures lived long before the Gigantoraptor, complicating the evolutionary timeline that scientists had earlier theorized. Now they need to rethink the process by which birds might have evolved.

[C] Though no fossilized feathers were found at the site, archaeologists and other scientists say this does not indicate Gigantoraptor didn’t have feathers, as feathers rarely fossilize. Though the Gigantoraptor is much bigger in size, the creature is quite similar in its shape and makeup to other birdlike creatures found previously who certainly did have feathers. It may also be responsible for the mammoth fossilized eggs – over 10 feet in diameter – discovered nearby. Though there is no definite link between them and Gigantoraptor, archaeologists believe that due to the size of the eggs, they likely came from this dinosaur.

[D] But the creature is stirring a bit of controversy, as well, because it has features of both herbivores and carnivores. Though it didn’t have teeth like most carnivores, it had 8-inch claws, which indicates that meat may well have been part of its diet. Scientists are still doing research on Gigantoraptor and other birdlike dinosaurs to determine their role in the evolutionary cycle.

Listening

[Reference: Listening 4.1]

My name is Rita and I’m an engineer with a major oil company based in the United Kingdom. One of the many projects we are working on is to combine technology with one of the oldest activities man has ever done: digging. Of course, digging today is done with expensive hi-tech equipment that can cost millions of dollars and has little in common with the kind of digging that has always been done since the beginning of human existence. But today digging has a new kind of importance since this kind of technology is important in the quest to find more oil.

Because oil in the earth is of a limited quantity, it’s very important that we locate and extract harder-to-reach oil reserves as soon as we can. The price of oil has gone up dramatically in the last ten years, and as oil increases in price, so do most other things. Since oil runs most vehicles including cars, trucks, boats, and planes, it’s hard to imagine what would happen if we ran out of oil. It’s a complex cycle and while other sources of fuel are being developed and researched, the most efficient method of creating energy still relies on fossil fuels. It’s unfortunate in many ways since burning oil and other fossil fuels pollutes the air and causes some political problems for many countries. But at this point, we have very few alternatives.

One of the ways that technology helps in oil production has to do with both locating oil reserves and extracting that oil. Modern-day inventions like sonar and radar are becoming quite sophisticated and can now find oil reserves deep in the earth that were once invisible to engineers. More than this, we are able to dig much deeper than previously, so this has also made it possible to get at oil that was impossible to extract even just 15 years ago. Unfortunately, all of this doesn’t come cheaply and it’s very unlikely that oil prices will go down as we spend more time, money, and resources in finding and extracting all the oil we can in the future.

Charles: Hi, Nancy. I’d like to talk to you about creating a new software program, if you can.

Nancy: Sure. When I’m finished with the new accounting system set-up, I’ll have plenty of time.

Charles: Oh, I didn’t realize you were doing a project. Maybe I will talk to Nicolas instead.

Nancy: Sorry. What I mean is that the project will be finished the day after tomorrow and I will be free after that.

Charles: Good. Well, what we’d like is a program to monitor the employees’ use of the Internet for personal business.

Nancy: You mean that you want me to write a program to spy on our employees? I don’t think I can do that. That is to say, I don’t think it’s a nice way to treat our employees.

Charles: No, that’s not what I mean. It’s just that we are getting pressure from the corporate office to increase our efficiency, and I thought that this might be one way of checking to see how efficient we are.

Nancy: So you want to see what non-business sites our employees are visiting during office hours?

Charles: Yes. Actually, what I meant to say was that because I am not interested in details or anything about what any one individual is doing, you can just write a program that simply keeps a record of all visits to non-business-related websites. I don’t care about which websites are being visited or who goes there. I just want a total of how many hours each day are being wasted online. Do you understand what I mean?

Nancy: I think so. What you’re saying is that you don’t need to know the specific websites or the names of people visiting them, but just a general sense of what percentage of web surfing is business related and what percentage isn’t?

Charles: Exactly. And since I am getting pressure from the Head Office, I think we should try to get started on it right away.

[A] The summer I turned 19, my parents gave me the most amazing birthday gift ever: they paid for me to fly to Israel and work in a Kibbutz for two months. It’s something I had wanted to do since I was a young child and it was a fantastic two months. Since Israel is an ancient land, there are countless archaeological sites throughout the country, and many young people go there for the summer to help work on these sites by digging for archaeological treasures. My first week was hard: I got up every morning at 6:30 a.m., and immediately the sun was the first thing I felt on my face. By 8:00 a.m., it was burning hot outside and I had to wear a hat to cover my skin since I am quite fair. By 10:00 a.m., sweat was rolling down my face and neck and I wanted a shower! Luckily, the food was excellent! We ate hummus and all kinds of special spicy and sweet breads. After a long day, we would jump into the sea and swim for an hour as the sun set in the distance. It was one of the best summers of my life!

[Reference: Writing 4.2]

[B] I try hard to grow my own vegetables in my garden. It’s a lot of work but I can control the use of pesticides, which is important to me. I have five different kinds of tomatoes, as well as cucumbers, peppers, and spices like basil, thyme, rosemary, and sage. Some mornings I can smell the light scent of these spices growing underneath the window outside, and it makes me happy to know that they are very fresh when I cook with them. The lavender I grow is beautiful and so soft and smooth to the touch. Another benefit to growing your own vegetables and spices that most people don’t realize is that store-bought food is often picked very early since it has to be shipped so far and stored in warehouses. Therefore, the vegetables are not as flavorful or healthy as your own home-grown food. If you could taste the sweet tangy tomatoes that I put in my spaghetti sauce you would agree that home-grown food is the best! Multiple choice

EZ Test for Hemispheres 3, Unit 5: Creating an Image

Reading

[Reference: Reading 5.1]

Word of Mouth Marketing[A] Marketing has been a part of business for generations, but one area of marketing that has been seriously neglected until recently is the role that word of mouth plays in developing and sustaining a product’s image or a company’s brand. Word of mouth marketing (WOMM) refers to how people “sell” products or services by talking about them to their friends or family. WOMM is considered to be one of the most effective and reliable forms of marketing because people generally believe testimonials of people they know and trust, which leads them to purchase products and services recommended to them. And the best thing about it for companies is that it is free!

Page 39: Hemispheres 3 ( 1-6)

[B] WOMM works like this. A person goes to a new restaurant down the street and has a good experience. This person tells many friends about his/her good experience. The average person may tell anywhere from 5 to 30 people, depending on his/her personality, profession, and background. Perhaps this person tells 15 people about how good this restaurant is. Those 15 people, based on this person’s recommendation, then go to the restaurant and also have a good experience. As a result, each of them tells 15 different people. After a short while, this adds up to a lot of good publicity for this restaurant. When you consider that millions of people might see a typical television ad, it might not seem that effective. However, research has shown that people are much more likely to buy a product, use a service, or even vote for a particular candidate in an election if someone they know and trust tells them of a positive association or experience with that product, service, or candidate. And it has cost the new restaurant down the street nothing. Beware, though: WOMM works just as effectively if a person has a negative experience and tells everyone he or she knows about it!

[C] Marketers are now paying closer attention to how people construct WOMM when they talk to their friends. What features of a dining experience, for example, is a person most likely to remember and tell people about? The food? The service? The price? The ambiance? The wine? Which kinds of people is the person most likely to tell and why? Who is most likely to take his/her advice and recommendations and who is least likely to do so? By considering the answers to these questions, professional marketers are hoping to come to a clearer understanding of how and why WOMM works so that companies can utilize it to their best advantage.

Listening

[Reference: Listening 5.1]

(Male voice) My name is Luc and I am a hairdresser in my own salon. My clients often ask me about image and how they can look more professional. I think that for people in the corporate world, these are good questions. In my opinion, one’s image is a very important part of being a professional. Here are some tips for both men and women on how to create and maintain a professional image.

Ladies, don’t cut your hair when you turn 35! In today’s corporate world, having long hair doesn’t mean people are less likely to respect you. Sure, short hair is easier to take care of, but I am sometimes told by women in the business world that they feel they should cut their hair short because they believe it helps them in business, and not because they want to. In my opinion, having self-confidence is the best way to gain respect in the business world, regardless of the length of your hair.

Guys, beards are for lumberjacks! A clean shaven face and short, clipped hair is still the corporate standard. Although it’s changing slightly, the style is still conservative in much of the business world today. So the long, shaggy facial hair has to go!

Manicures are a great way to keep the nails trimmed and clean. And this goes for men as well as for women, in my view. No one wants to do business with somebody whose fingernails are dirty, ragged, or chewed off. Keeping your hands and nails looking professional is, according to my experience, one of the most important parts of overall appearance.

Finally, make the maintenance of your appearance a daily part of your professional routine. Get plenty of sleep so that you look healthy. Drink plenty of water. Wear clean and stylish clothes that reflect your own personality. The old adage about clothes applies to one’s appearance as well: dress for the position you want, not for the position you have.

Jerry: How tall are you?

Crystal: That’s a funny question! I’m 5’4”. Why do you ask?

Jerry: Just curious. And do you like it? Boston, I mean?

Crystal: I do, actually. It’s different from the West where I grew up, but people are nice and have more drive than people in Oregon.

Jerry: Is that where you’re from?

Crystal: Yes. I grew up in Portland and Boise, Idaho.

Jerry: Oh I hear it’s beautiful there. Can I ask you a personal question?

Crystal: Well. It depends on what the question is!

Jerry: You were married once before, right? What happened?

Crystal: Oh, sorry, Jerry, but I’d really rather not talk about it. It was a very difficult time in my life.

Jerry: I understand. Do you still talk to your ex-husband?

Crystal: Sometimes. But tell me about you. Where are you from?

Jerry: I’m from here. So, how much do you weigh, Crystal?

Crystal: Jerry! That is a very personal question! Didn’t you ever learn that you should never ask a woman her weight?

Crystal: Yes, as a matter of fact. When I was in college I got a small owl tattooed on my back.

Jerry: Wow! Why did you do that? Can I see it?

Crystal: No, you can’t see it! I did it because my friends were getting tattoos and I wanted one, too. But I wish I hadn’t.

Jerry: Why? Did you gain a lot of weight since then?

Crystal: Uhhh . . . not really. Listen, Jerry. I’m sorry to have to say this, but our date is over!

[Reference: Writing 5.1] [A] A recent study tried to determine whether bald men of different ages were perceived as attractive by young women. Fifty women, all aged 25, were asked to rate pictures of 145 men. The men in the pictures ranged in age from 20–50 and were completely bald or going bald. The women were asked to rate the men on a three-point scale as unattractive, neutral, or attractive.

[B] The partial results of this study can be seen in Graph 5.1, which shows only the results of the women who thought that men of various ages were attractive. Based on these partial results, it seems that these 25-year-old women who found bald men attractive were more likely to choose the younger 20-year-old men as attractive. The 25-year-old women were less likely to think of the 50-year-old bald men as attractive. More results need to be presented before a complete analysis can be done.

[A] Jerry Bruckheimer, a well-known television and film producer in the United States, has a new pilot in production for a reality TV show to rival his super popular The Amazing Race. Bruckheimer’s new show is called Fear Mongers and it’s aimed at capitalizing on the trend in reality TV that has been happening in American television for nearly ten years now. The show’s premise is pretty simple: two people each week will talk about their greatest fears and then face these fears. Fears might involve dealing with animals, such as snakes or tigers. The fears might also involve something outdoors, like climbing the side of a skyscraper or swimming in a fast-moving river. The show will be a one-hour feature about two people attempting to overcome their fears.

[B] In the pilot episode, now being filmed, one contestant’s fear has to do with speaking in public. This contestant, named Annie, will talk for a few minutes about how the fear of speaking in public has caused her problems: it has cost her business in her job as a marketing analyst and given her a lot of stress over the years. Then the show’s host will talk about the tasks that Annie must face in order to conquer her fear. In this episode, Annie will have to give three speeches to three groups of different sizes and the cameras will be there every step of the way to catch Annie’s worries, stress, and terror before she performs.

[C] The other half of the pilot episode features Nick, a professional chef, who has an odd if surprisingly not uncommon fear of buttons. Again, following the same format, Nick will talk for a little while about his fear and the reasons he wants to overcome it. Nick’s new wife is a fashion editor, and he feels that he should learn to stop being afraid of buttons so that he can visit his wife’s office and not get nervous with the thought of so many buttons. Next, Nick meets with a psychologist to discuss his fear and will work up to the final task: being dropped into a 10-foot tank full of thousands of buttons.

[D] Bruckheimer’s pilot is airing in the fall season, and he is hoping that the show will be picked up by a major television network. Fear Mongers looks to be a new hit for Bruckheimer and reality TV in general.

Listening

[Reference: Listening 6.1]

I don’t have many fears, I guess, except for one big one: I’m very afraid of earthquakes! I know it sounds funny because an earthquake is something that we can’t do very much about, but I still lie awake some nights worrying. For instance, I worry that I will be trapped under my building in an earthquake. I also worry that I won’t be able to contact my family since they live in another state. I don’t worry about tsunamis, though, since the ocean is miles away.

One reason that I think I might be so afraid of earthquakes is that when I was a little girl, my family and I were visiting Japan during the Kobe earthquake of 1995. It was so scary! The hotel we were in shook suddenly, and my sister and I were knocked out of our bed. It was a new hotel, so it didn’t fall down in the earthquake, though many buildings near us did. The worst part was after the earthquake. At first we were blocked in our room and couldn’t get to our parents’ room next door. We were so scared. Then fire trucks and alarms began sounding. Since my sister and I didn’t speak Japanese, we didn’t know what was happening. We were trapped in the room for about an hour before they broke the door down and we were reunited with our parents. But it took us another week to get back home to the United States because of the problems the earthquake caused with the roads and the airport.

I think because of that experience, I always worry about earthquakes and I do what I can to prepare for them. For example, when I moved to this apartment, I was very careful to ask an engineer about the building’s structure. He told me that it was a very strong building and would probably survive most earthquakes. Talking to him made me feel better. He also told me there were things I could do such as always keep at least one month’s supply of food and water in the closet of my spare room just in case I ever need it. I also have an emergency evacuation plan, as well as a meeting point with my family just in case.

There might never be a big earthquake where I live, but at least I can sleep better at night knowing I’m prepared.

Katherine: Oh, I’m glad I ran into you, Michael. I have something I’d like to talk to you about.

Michael: Oh, OK. What did you want to say?

Katherine: Well, I hear that you are ordering a few supplies for Jim’s retirement party next weekend and I was hoping that I could add a few things. I was informed this morning that everyone from the Miami branch would be coming up for that party, too, so we are going to need more food and supplies.

Michael: Oh, I’m so glad we’re talking, then. What do you think we will need?

Katherine: How many beverages did you order?

Michael: I ordered 10 flats of soda, 5 gallons of fruit juice, and a bottle of champagne for the toast. Do you think that’s enough?

Katherine: Well there are at least 25 people from Miami coming, so maybe not. Let’s add a little fruit juice and some soda, say 15 flats of soda, 7 gallons of juice, and four more bottles of champagne. What about the cake? How much cake do we have?

Michael: The bakery told me they’d provide enough cake for around 45 people. So we’re going to have to add to that.

Katherine: Yes, we will need a little more cake. And a few more paper cups, paper plates, and plastic utensils, as well.

Michael: You’re right. There’s so much to think about.

Katherine: And how much ice cream do we have?

Michael: A little. I will order two more gallons.

Katherine: Good. And what did we order Jim for his retirement gift?

Michael: Everyone donated $10 and we are going to buy him a nice watch with all the money. Is everyone in Miami willing to do that?

Katherine: Yes, I talked to the manager there this morning. That should be no problem. So that’s $350 more! Great!

What you’re saying is that you don’t need to know the specific websites or the names of people visiting them, but just a general sense of what percentage of web surfing
