What NGLC’s Breakthrough Models Do

Focus on outcomes for students (not inputs) Use technology to personalize learning and

engage students

Include online elements (or are all online)

Provide targeted student support

Use learning analytics

Innovate on use of time

Use new staffing models

Save students and institutions money



Breakthrough Degree Models – Why?

One-size-fits-all instruction is only effective for aminority of students (Bloom, 1984)

Very few institutions nationally enroll and graduate

high percentages of Pell-eligible students (EducationTrust, 2012)

Institutions feel locked in to the status quo(National Center for Public Policy and HigherEducation, 2008)

Online programs are exploding … but their efficacy is

doubted (Community College Research Center, 2011)

Too few innovat ive models exist

that combine affordability, access, and quality



And so in 2012 …
