The lobster and the crab are very similar. They have five pairs of jointed legs. The first pair of legs are the claws which they use to crush the shells.

WHALE

This is my friend the whale. Although it lives in the sea, it is not a fish but a mammal. The whale breathes through the ‘blowhole’ on its back. Whales live in groups called ‘herds’ and the baby whale is called a ‘calf’.

SHARK

A shark has lots of very sharp teeth. There are about 400 different types of sharks in the world. Examples are the hammerhead shark, the Great White shark and the Whale shark. People are often scared of sharks but they can be friendly too!

OCTOPUS

The octopus has 8 arms called tentacles. It catches its food with the suckers it has on its arms. A mummy octopus lays thousands of eggs at a time. These sea creatures live in underwater dens.

ELECTRIC EEL

The electric eel is a long snake-like fish. It catches its prey by giving them an electric shock. But don’t worry! One single shock from it won’t kill you!

SEA STAR

The sea star is known as a starfish but it not a fish! It has five arms called rays. If the starfish loses one of its arms, it will grow a new one. A starfish has no eyes, ears or nose.

SEAHORSE

The seahorse has a long horse-like head which gives it its name. It also has a curled tail. This type of fish can change its colour to hide from its enemies. Seahorses are very slow swimmers.

JELLYFISH

Jellyfish float in the sea. They have soft bodies with long stinging poisonous tentacles. Some types of jellyfish glow in the dark.

DOLPHIN

And finally let me tell you something about myself. Like the whale I am not a fish but a mammal. I am a very fast swimmer! I need to go to the surface of the water to breathe but I can stay for up to 15 minutes under water. We dolphins can be very friendly with people.
