Chapter 10

• "One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to meditate in His temple" (Psa. 27:4).

• “Fear God and keep his commandments for this is the whole of man” (Eccles. 12:13).

Understanding Worship 10:19-25

Worship is an overflow of a mind renewed by the truth of

God. • Sometimes that brings tears of shame or

shouts of praise but what it will lead to is worship.

• “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ (2 Cor. 10:5).

Returning to Worship• The failure to worship God in spirit and in

truth is not just an unfortunate lapse in spiritual enthusiasm, it is a sin (Jn. 4:24).

• Acceptable worship doesn't happen spontaneously-you must prepare yourself.

The Checkpoint of Sincerity• It is hypocritical to be worshiping God

when you are really apathetic or preoccupied with self. Draw near to God

with your whole heart.

The Checkpoint of FidelityWhen we come by full assurance of faith it means that one is coming to God on God’s terms not the terms of rituals or emotions.

God accepts our worship because it is biblical not because of what we think ought to be done in worship.

The Checkpoint of Humility

• That is, you come to God with the knowledge that you are unworthy to be in His presence.

The Checkpoint of Purity• Since our bodies are the

temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 3:16) that body need first to be washed by the water of regeneration (Titus 3:5; Acts 2:38) to wash away the stench of sin.

• Then there is the continual daily cleansing by the Word of God (1 Pet. 1:23).

Checkpoint of Encouragement v. 24

• A house of love will not tire, will not falter and will not fail.

Checkpoint of Activity v. 24• The church will not only

be looking for ways to improve her image but actively seeking ways to aid those who are in need.

• Jesus just didn’t teach he began to do then teach (Acts 1:1).

Checkpoint of Faithfulness vs. 23, 25

• If one is to worship in spirit and truth then he must agree to assemble to worship.

• Whatever duress they were under they were not excused by the Holy Spirit in forsaking the assembling time and neither is one today.

"Jesus Christ, the Perfect Sacrifice"

Biblical Worship Dwells on and Centers Around Jesus Christ

• At the heart of it, we began to discover from Hebrews chapter one that Jesus deserves our worship because he is better than the angels, he is better than Moses and better than any priest who ever lived. And, as a better high priest, He secures a new and better covenant made possible by making a better or perfect sacrifice.

• Jesus had to accomplish all those things so our worship may be made acceptable unto God.

Animal Sacrifices Failed• They couldn't bring access to God

Without Christ, you can't get past the shadow of God.

The word "perfection," teleao, means “to come to its complete end.”

Can’t come through any other means except through Christ (Jn. 14:6).

Worshipping God through shadows is about as productive as crossing a raging river by the shadow of a bridge.

Animal Sacrifices Failed• They couldn't remove sin v. 2.

It was only temporarily covered. And the lid came off every time they sinned.

Worship doesn’t remove sin.

Animal Sacrifices Failed• They were only external

Hebrews 9:13, "If the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling

the unclean sanctifieth only to the purifying of the external, how much

more shall the blood of Christ who, through the eternal Spirit, offered Himself

without spot to God, purge your conscience?"

Christ's Sacrifice was so Effective Because, It Was

God's Will All along. • “Lamb slain from the foundations of the world”

(Rev. 13:8).• "I come to do thy will, oh, God. You made a body

for me, and I submit to your will." • "Mine ears hast thou digged."

• Have we digged our ears in worship with the whole body or just the emotional aspect of some worship experience?

God willed a holy humanity. So Christ's sacrifice was effective

because it fulfilled the ultimate will of God to make man holy again and

approachable to God.

Secondly, the sacrifice of Christ was effective because it replaced the old system v. 9

• "By which will we are sanctified." • Paul writes, "This is the will of God, even

your sanctification" (1 Thess. 4:3).

• One can’t set themselves apart by their own works of worship creativity (Titus 4:4-5) but one can be set apart for the worship of God through a holy sacrifice.

The sacrifice of Christ was effective because it

sanctifies the believer v. 10.

Christ's Sacrifice is Better Because it Removes Sin v. 11

Set of Contrasts• Many – “One”• Stood – “Sits”

• Ministers daily – “Offered once”• Never removed sins – “One sacrifice for

all time”• The act of Jesus can’t be reproduced but

it can be imitated.

Christ's sacrifice was effective because it destroyed His enemies

v. 13 • First of all, He destroyed him that had the power

of death, Satan, (Heb 2:14, 15). • Secondly, He showed openly in triumph over

fallen angels (1 Pet. 3:19). • Thirdly, over all those who reject Him and reject

God throughout the ages He shows His triumph through the church in his presence (Rev. 2, 3).

• The term here simply expresses the concept of a king who sits on a throne and his subjects are beneath him.

• No greater verse could be employed here but the one found in Philippians 2:9-11.

His Sacrifice was Effective, Sixth, Because it Perfected Forever the Saints, v. 14

• Weymouth New Testament: For by a single offering He has for ever completed the blessing for those whom He is setting free from sin.

• Darby Bible Translation: For by one offering he has perfected in perpetuity the sanctified.

• GOD'S WORD® Translation: With one sacrifice he accomplished the work of setting them apart for God forever.

• English Standard Version: For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

• New American Standard Bible:For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.

• “Don’t harden your heart,” (3:15); “Don’t throw away your confidence” (3:6; 10:35); “if they fall away” (6:6); and the ultimate admonition, “for if we sin willfully” speaking of turning back to the Old Covenant ways, “there no longer remains a sacrifice for sin” (10:26). • So the passage is revealing that in contrast to the continual sacrificing under the old system that Jesus’ sacrifice, though only offered once, will suffice for all time those who are willing to be sanctified under the terms of the new covenant.

Lastly, the Sacrifice of Christ is Effective Because it Fulfills

the Promised New Covenant v. 18• This is important for one to understand

when it comes to the practice of worship because there is no new revelation, no new information, no new “spirit informed practices” or “additional scriptures” added since the age of the apostles. It is a covenant once and for all sealed with blood and delivered with no additions to be made in the future (Jude v. 3).

The Sacrifice of Jesus is Effective Because:

It FULFILLS GOD’S WILLIT REPLACES THE OLD SYSTEMIT SANCTIFIES THE BELIEVER

IT REMOVES SINIT DESTROYS ALL ENEMIES

IT PERFECTS THE SAINTS FOREVERIT FULFILLS THE PROMISED COVENANT
