The Epoch of Elephants | School Board OfficeFran Duthie with Andrea Duthie Elephanatics

Explore the changing ecology of Africa due to widespread poaching of elephants for their ivory. Elephants play a key role in maintaining the balance of all other species in the community. If poaching continues at the current rate, the African elephant is doomed for extinction in 15-20 years. In the lesson plans we have designed fit the science curriculum for grades 4-7, children will learn the importance of the elephant and how its demise would create not only an environmental crisis, but an global economic crisis.

In May 2013, a group of concerned individuals formed an elephant advocacy group called ‘Elephanatics’. The goal of the group is to help the long-term survival of African elephants by spreading awareness and disseminating information about their ecology and conservation in the face of recent resurgence of ivory poaching in Africa. Their objective is to make people aware that poaching is not only an ecological problem, but an global economic problem as well. Andrea currently attends UBC in the sciences program and is a co-founder of Elephanatics.
