1 Heart to Heart Psalm 103:8-18 The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love, He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever. Children do not flourish in an atmosphere of anger and accusation. They grow when their parents administer His mercy and grace. He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. When he forgives our sin, he doesn’t even remember it. God forgives and forgets. Our children need us to do the same. As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; He doesn’t justify our sin, but his mercy takes everything into account. God is compas- sionate. A Word to Fathers ~ By Bill Stephens

Finding Happiness (Part 1) Shared at the 2018 commencement First, if I am going to talk about happiness I need to define the word. In the Merriam Webster dictionary, hap-piness is defined as “enjoying or characterized by well-being and contentment.” I think that is a good defini-tion. My example out of the Bible of a happy contented man is described in Psalm 128, “Blessed is the man who fears the Lord who walks in His ways. When you shall eat of the fruit of your hands, you will be happy and it will be well with you.” I have always been drawn to that part of the Psalm where the psalmist says that he will be happy as he is eats the fruit of his labor. I think not many people really enjoy the fruits of their labor. It doesn’t say this is a rich man or that he was poor just that he was happy and content. I also like the description of the woman described in Proverbs 31:25, “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she smiles at the fu-ture.” Do you smile at the future? I heard it said that we feel guilty about the past and we feel anxiety towards the future. That sounds pretty accurate. Key #1 It is not About You. Realize that your life is not about you. In 2 Corinthians 1:6 Paul writes, “If we are distressed, it is for your com-fort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm because we know that just as you share in our suffer-ings, so also you share in our comfort.” Paul is saying that his suffering as well as his comfort is for others to gain strength and increase in faith. This is the life of the cross—Jesus first, others second. Of course, this is contrary to modern life. When I was finishing college our culture was in the midst of the “Me Generation” a saying first coined by Tom Wolfe. Now we have progressed from the Me focus to the Personal Rights focus to Narcissism focus to the Victimhood focus which is an expression of extreme narcissism. I have read the Bible cover to cover. I have never read anything about my personal rights. I have read about my re-sponsibilities to God and my fellow human. Condoleeza Rice, in an interview on NPR said that her father told her to never consider herself a victim because then your enemies have won. Condolezza Rice experienced the loss of two of her school friends in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in 1963. Jesus said in Matthew 16:25, ‘For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for my

sake will find it.”

Again in Luke 22:27 “ For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the

one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.

Proverbs 31:8-9 “Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all the unfortunate. Open your mouth, judge

righteously, and defend the rights of the afflicted and needy.

Lose your life, begin to serve and you find happiness.

Walk Through American History

This is a hands-on, interactive field trip that is designed to allow your student to actively participate in a retelling of American history. This presentation is designed to allow your students to actively participate in a lively retelling of our nation’s beginnings. Through the use of games, music, and storytelling, history will come alive! Students explore the famous events, historical figures, and relevant vocabulary of this pivotal point in America’s history. Through dramatic activities, students “become” famous men and women of the American Revolution. Flags, maps, re-enactments, music, and games help students explore and understand the importance of American liberty and patriotism. Each student will portray a historical figure from America’s rich history in costume and will be given 4-5 sentences (before the event) to study and recite about that figure. Students and families are responsible to make and create their own simple costumes. Creative expression, note taking, and vocabulary development are fostered and encouraged. The Lord can use all things- especially literature to teach us and to help us gain wisdom that can be applied to our own lives. To Him be the glory!

PE 6th to 8th Grade Chris Rix, head coach 8 weeks alternating with Shaun Dunn & Gideon Cheatwood, assistants Chris played varsity football, baseball and basketball at Bishop AMAT high school and Santa Margarita high school. He then received a full scholarship to play quarterback at Florida State. There he became the 1st and only 4 year starter at FSU and also graduated with a degree studying communications. Following his college career Chris went on to the NFL with the San Diego Chargers. He is now a Pastor and serves as the director of ministry for the Fellowship of Christian athletes. He is also the founder and head coach of the Champion Training Academy here in Southern California, helping train athletes in all sports and all ages.

My name is Shaun Dunn, and I am a senior in High School with WCPSP. Since I was a kid, I’ve always preferred running around outside and getting muddy and dirty, riding dirt-bikes, four-wheelers, or playing war, to staying inside and playing video games, board games, etc. I want to share my passion with others- ignite a fire that is inside of everyone, and show your kids why God created us so complex. I want your kids to grow stronger physically, mentally, and spiritually, but most im-portantly, have fun this year. God created the outdoors for a reason. Not to just be admired from a distance, but to get up close and personal with it, to grow stronger in our faith, and our fitness. Being fit will allow all of us to enjoy God’s creation more, and experience the wonders of it. Your kids will be able to test their limits, and sprout new hobbies. My hope is that your children will understand that life is not confined to the house, apartment, condo, etc. Life is meant to be experienced to it’s fullest! “Fitness is not about being better than someone else, it’s about being better than you used to be.” (UNK)

Hi, my name is Gideon. I have been homeschooled for nine years now. I am a sophomore in High school and am an aspiring fireman. Get ready for fun games and excellent workouts while I am coaching you!

Instructor: Felicite Badillo ~ Felicite Badillo has been fortunate enough to live, teach, and homeschool in a variety of places

including Oregon, Texas, Arkansas, New Mexico, Arizona, Florida, and now sunny southern California. After earning her

bachelor’s degree in secondary education with an endorsement in English from Western Oregon University, she taught mid-

dle school language arts and history in the classroom for five years. She became a homeschool mom when her oldest child

was in the first grade and currently homeschools her three children ages 4 to 13. As a homeschooling mom, Felicite has dug

up an ant hill (and gotten bit!) to observe what happens inside, found and identified various types of shells on the beach, fed a

stingray, allowed her son to have a pet snail, read aloud many, many historical fiction novels, made soap, and dissected a

flower…all in the name of education. She has a love for middle school students and is really excited to be back in the class-

room teaching them literature and history.

Tips for Preparing Your Student for College

Having a high school diploma is important but it doesn’t guarantee that you will be able to get

into college. It can be a difficult process these days. Here are 12 tips/suggestions for students

considering college entrance:

1. Plan ahead. When you know what college you want to go to, go to their website to make

sure that you are taking the courses that they recommend.

2. Align your course titles with those of Western Christian so that the colleges will recognize

what you have been doing.

3. Check the Western Christian website to see what courses CSU and UC want you to take.

4. Check these websites for more information about how to get into college as a homeschool-

er: Look at https://secure.californiacolleges.edu/College Planning/Prepare for College/

Home Schooling.aspx and http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/

homeschool/index.html (or google “How do homeschoolers get into college?”).

5. Be involved in the community so that you can talk about your experiences and the ways

that you have made a difference to people. Colleges want smart and academic students,

but they also want people who can change the world for the better.

6. Find out what you do well, do it, and learn how to write about it. Colleges are looking for

you to explain to them why you are “head and shoulders better” than the others who are

also applying to college.

7. Take the tests. Take the SAT. Take the ACT. Take the SAT II subject tests. Find objec-

tive ways to prove that you are who you say you are. Test taking is a learned skill. Prac-

tice, practice, practice.

8. Take AP courses and their corresponding tests.

9. Take some community college courses or enroll in the part-time program at Western

Christian. This is another way to show that you are as good a student as your mother

thinks you are.

10. Make sure that you have all the courses that Western Christian requires for a diploma.

11. Most importantly, pray for God to go before you in this whole process.

12. Remember that it is hard to get into many college programs today, so you should have

several options. Don’t put all your hopes and dreams into one program unless you have

figured out several ways to get there.

Physical Science This is a full year high school credit class. 8th graders can take the class for high school science credit as well. Topics covered will include: matter in its 3 states, kinetic and potential energy, foundations of chemistry, Newton’s Laws of Motion, forces and simple machines, sound and light waves, magnetism, and electricity. This is a foundational science course that prepares your student for upper level science. It includes laboratory experiments that reinforce topics. We will be doing a science project and presentation in the second semester. (minimum 7 students needed) Textbook/Materials: Science: Matter and Energy Textbook, Lab Book, and Test book from Abeka Publishers Location: Chino Valley Community Church Teacher: Charley Cheatwood, [email protected] Course Fee: $155 per semester Enrollment Fee: $30 For this class to be held there must be a minimum of seven students enrolled

High School Biology Biology is most exciting (and most truthful) when it is taught and learned in the context of our awesome Creator. His creation certainly reflects the majesty, wisdom, and power of God. Unfortunately, secular science is often taught in such a way as to become a stumbling block to the development of our faith. Science can instead be a stepping-stone to faith – the evidence for design is everywhere, especially in Biology! This course is taught with a Creation perspective. We will use the Apologia book, “Exploring Creation with Biology”. Topics include the five kingdoms of life, the chemistry of life, cell structure and function, genetics, ecology, evolution (as a theory), as well as plant, animal, and human biology. Each week we will have a one-hour lecture/discussion period (generally using PowerPoint slides), followed by a one-hour lab. Course Fee: $300/semester, plus enrollment fee, $30 Instructor: Matthew H. Sanders, [email protected] or (626) 244-5462 Matthew has a MS in Biology from the Institute for Creation Research. He is currently an adjunct professor at Azusa Pacific University. Matthew has taught high school chemistry and physics with the EIE home school program in Monro-via, CA. He has also taught at Christbridge Academy in Azusa, CA; AP Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, US His-tory, Government, Economics, and Personal Values/Bible classes. Matthew created and taught a science course for the Upward Bound program at Cal Poly Pomona. see www.mattsanders.info for more information

High School Chemistry This course provides a rigorous foundation in chemistry in preparation for college-level chemistry. Topics covered in-clude significant figures, units, classification, the mole concept, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, kinet-ics, acids and bases, redox reactions, solutions, atomic structure, Lewis structures, molecular geometry, the gas laws, and equilibrium. The lab period will alternate between Chemistry labs and a math tutoring time. Students often have difficultly under-standing the math that goes with each chapter, so we will focus on that every other week. We will still do at least one lab with each chapter. We will spend approximately two weeks on each chapter. Students will be given pages to read each day at home, and questions to answer. Short quizzes will be given for each chapter online. Mr. Sanders is always available by phone or email, and is happy to answer any questions or concerns that arise. These are available as a set from Berean Builders Pub. for $65.

Teacher: Mary-Anne Bunda (BS in Marketing; certified to teach the ABA Approach to Powerful Studying; has over 10

years of research in College Preparation; has homeschooled 2 of 3 kids with Western Christian PSP from K to 12th

grade for the past 17 years; believes that proper planning for the post-high school years begins as early as possi-

ble. (Curriculum fee: $60/year or $30/semester in addition to tuition).

I created this one-of-a-kind elective class to equip high-schoolers with the motivation, perspectives, tools & study

skills my own kids used to help them succeed in the next phase of life. I'm excited to help students prepare to transition

into the real world where the testing of their faith will begin. They will not only gain an awareness of who they are in

Christ with assessments on their own unique temperaments, intelligences, strengths, personalities, etc. but also estab-

lish good habits in time-management, organization, note-taking, test-taking, etc.. Then they will set goals and make

decisions that will give them ownership of their future. It will be an inspiring, challenging 1-year course that will also

help students face the challenges of today's culture with confidence. *Class size is very limited. Classes will be taught

in Pomona on Tuesdays & Chino Hills on Fridays if minimum class size is met so please let her know your inten-

tions to enroll your student as soon as possible. [email protected] IMPACT—“Service, Community, and Fun.” Middle School Class for 6-8th Grade Impact Is an exciting new class just for Middle School students. The goal of Impact is to give back and serve the students at Western Christian PSP. The students in Impact work to raise school spirit, community, and student involvement in service projects. In addition, we will develop deeper community by planning events for 6th-8th graders. Impact students who enroll do so because they recognize that there is more to being suc-

cessful in school than simply doing homework. Having a positive atmosphere where students feel wanted and ac-cepted is critical to their success. To that end, the members of Impact will focus on providing engaging activities that ensure a well-rounded middle school experience monthly. Impact will help to develop organizational and communica-tion skills. We will have a strong focus on Godly character, service and community. Being an Impact member is easy! If you will be in 6th-8th grade, all you have to do is fill out an application and get an interview. Each Spring, Impact will elect class officers to represent the group. You have the option of running for an office or just be an appointed member. Everyone has a role in Impact and you should become a part of it! Impact is composed of students that are in 6th-8th grade. Space is limited! Apply NOW for Fall!

PRE-ALGEBRA (Grades 7-9ish) - THIS CLASS BEING OFFERED IN POMONA Text: Pre-Algebra, BJU Press Student hardback. – TO BE DETERMINED OR student softback T.E. – TO BE DETERMINED - (2 VOLUMES!!)

This is a full year course. Will cover skills required to proceed into High School Algebra, and students completing it will be WELL PREPARED for Algebra 1. **I get asked often, which math should my Jr Higher be doing?” If your student does a decent job (80% average) on basic mathematics, especially multiplication & division, and maybe ok on fractions, he/she should take Pre-Algebra. The current “fashionable” trend in education these days (public and private) is that stu-dents should take Algebra I in 8th grade, which would mean Pre-Alg in 7th. This works for some, and is (in my opinion) a GRAVE mistake for a lot of others! According to Bob Jones, this is an 8th grade curriculum. This class is available, as well, to High School students who require additional work on the basics! Call me if you need to talk about any of this! Starts right out working with equations, covering properties of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Will move into decimals, integers, multiples, factors, fractions, equations and inequalities, ratio, proportion, percentages, ge-ometry and graphing. Emphasis through entire text is on equations and solving them, using all the mathematical concepts introduced. These basic skills would be prerequisite for an Algebra course. Students will learn concepts in class, and then complete daily assignments at home. TEACHER’S EDITION REQUIRED - daily homework to be corrected by parent and/or student. Tests will be sent home, to be administered by a parent or homeschooling teacher, and brought back to the next class session. I.D.E.A.L. Skills for Ideal Students

Teacher: Mary-Anne Bunda (BS in Marketing; certified to teach the ABA Approach to Powerful Studying; has

over 10 years of research in College Preparation; has homeschooled 2 of 3 kids with Western Christian PSP from K

to 12th grade for the past 17 years; believes that proper planning for the post-high school years begins as early as

possible. (Curriculum fee: $60/year or $30/semester in addition to tuition).

I created this one-of-a-kind elective class to equip high-schoolers with the motivation, perspectives, tools &

study skills my own kids used to help them succeed in the next phase of life. I'm excited to help students pre-

pare to transition into the real world where the testing of their faith will begin. They will not only gain an

awareness of who they are in Christ with assessments on their own unique temperaments, intelligences,

strengths, personalities, etc. but also establish good habits in time-management, organization, note-taking, test

-taking, etc.. Then they will set goals and make decisions that will give them ownership of their future. It will

be an inspiring, challenging 1-year course that will also help students face the challenges of today's culture

with confidence. *Class size is very limited. Classes will be taught in Pomona on Tuesdays & Chino Hills on

Fridays if minimum class size is met so please let her know your intentions to enroll your student as

soon as possible. [email protected]
