Tuesday, May 22✩TURN IN HW! HEART DISSECTION
WEDNESDAY!
The Heart✩A Muscular Pump The heart is made of
cardiac muscle tissues, which contracts to pump blood.

The Heart Cycle25 points
Pulmonary loop: pumps oxygen-poor blood through pulmonary arteries to the lungs.
Release carbon dioxide & pick up oxygen.
Right side heart
Systemic circulation: pumps oxygen-rich blood through arteries to tissues of the body.
Oxygen poor blood is returned to right side heart through veins
Left side of heart

✩Circulation of Blood
Wednesday-Thursday, May 23-24
PIG HEART DISSECTION!
✩Circulation of blood 1. Superior vena cava sends oxygen-poor blood from body to right atrium
✩Circulation of blood 2. Blood from right atrium moves into right ventricle
✩Circulation of blood
3. Right ventricle contracts send blood to pulmonary arteries
✩Circulation of blood
4. Pulmonary arteries send blood to the lungs. At capillaries of lungs carbon dioxide exchanged for oxygen
✩Circulation of blood
5. Pulmonary veins return blood to left atrium.
✩Circulation of blood
6. Left atrium sends blood to left ventricle.
7. Left ventricle sends blood to aorta
8. Aorta sends blood to coronary arteries, the brain and the rest of the body.
✩Sinoatrial (SA) node
A small cluster of cardiac muscles which initiate the contraction of the heart
Heart contracts an average of 72 times per minute.
✩Electrocardiogram ECG or EKG
Electrical changes with each heart contraction analyzed.
✩Blood pressure Blood pressure is the force exerted by blood as it moves through blood vessels
Systolic pressure measures heart contraction
Diastolic pressure is pressure exerted when the heart relaxes.
Normal = 120/80 mm Hg
Sphygmomanemeter = blood pressure cuff
✩Hypertension High blood pressure – left untreated leads to heart damage, brain damage or kidney failure.
Aerobic exercise maintains healthy blood pressure
✩Heart rate Pulse – a series of pressure waves wit an artery causes by contraction of left ventricle.
Average heart rate is 60 to 90 beats/ minute.
How can you take care of your heart?
• EAT HEALTHY!– Eat unsaturated fat, not saturated or trans fat!– EAT FIBER!
• EXERCISE!
• MANAGE YOUR STRESS IN HEALTHY WAYS!
• Look at Serving Size.• Look at Servings per
Container.• Look at Amount Per Serving.• Look at Calories.
– HEALTHY SNACK = 100 CALORIES
• Look at Grams• Look at % Daily Value.
NUTRITION FACTS LABEL
Saturated Fat = Unhealthy Fat!
• SOLID at Room Temperature
• Found in:–Butter–Cheese–Milk–Ice Cream–Meat
Saturated Fats = Usually Animal Fats
• coconut oil
• palm kernel oil
• palm oil
• cocoa fat (chocolate!)
Some vegetable products high in saturated fats:
• Hydrogenation is the chemical process that changes liquid oils into solid fats, which is unhealthy.
• Solid at room temp.
Trans Fats = “Hydrogenated Oils” (Man-Made Fat)
Unhealthy FATS!
• LIQUID at room temperature.
• Found in vegetable products (avocado, nuts, seeds) and oils.
Unsaturated Fat = Healthy Fat!
Omega-3 fatty acids = Good for You!
• Essential because they can’t be made in the body; you must eat them!
• Found in oils from some fish (like salmon!) and the seeds of flax, walnuts and hemp.
Saturated fats, Trans fats and Hydrogenated Oils
cause
Coronary Heart Disease!
(heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure)
Actual Clogged Artery!
AtherosclerosisThe process of the arteries becoming
progressively narrower. Can lead to a heart attack or stroke!
✩Heart attack Blockage of arteries caused by blood clot or buildup of fatty deposits.
✩Stroke A stroke is either a blockage or a rupture of the blood cells in the brain. The brain contains nerve cells, and if they are deprived of oxygen, they die within a few minutes.
Fiber fights heart
disease!
• Soluble Fiber: Dissolves in blood and traps cholesterol, reducing risk of heart disease. Found in oat bran, apples, beans and some veggies.
• Insoluble Fiber: Cleans digestive system, reducing risk of colon cancer. Found in wheat bran, corn, brown rice, and skins of fruits and veggies.
