• This unprecedented natural disaster marked the end for many historic buildings in the Garden City.

• Music and The Arts have always formed part of the heart and soul of Christchurch, so, it seemed fitting that a small piece of history that was “lost” be given life as a viable and beautiful musical instrument.

• The owners of many historically important buildings gave permission for the timber to be collected and used to make a series of seven guitars – Guitar Series 7.1 – each designed to reflect its story and history.

• These Guitars will be auctioned to raise money for organisations in the struggling Christchurch Arts Community – re-establishing the passion and creativity that Christchurch is renowned for.

Genesis of an Idea September 4th 2010 –

The first Christchurch Earthquake

Supporting the Arts and giving Christchurch back its history, heart and soul.

• Guitar Series 7.1 are fully operational and designed in sympathy with the age of the timber used.

• They have a classic, single cut-away shape, reminiscent of the 1960’s and 70’s.

• The contours are subtle – as are the contours of Canterbury.

• There are artistic representations of the rivers, the sudden change in topography and damaged areas of Christchurch.

• The viewers of these artworks will discover their own meanings within the grain and curves of these unique instruments.

• The seven Guitars are called:- Chester, Homebush, Gunyah, Ohinetahi, Graduate, Southern Blues and Epicenter.

Exhibition of Guitar Series 7.1

Held in October/Novermber 2011 at a suitable venue in Christchurch.

• Including Gala Opening Night event

• Will allow the public to view and appreciate the Guitars, feel the history and story behind the designs, and increase awareness of the Cause.

• Will allow people to donate money to the Cause and/or bid on a guitar.

Gala Auction Event

• Held on November 24th at a the Geo Dome in Hagley Park, Christchurch.

• Ticketed event to include tables of 10, dinner, drinks, entertainment from recipients from the Arts Community and other artists including Fly my Pretties and the Auction of Guitar Series 7.1 plus other items.

• The Memorial Guitar will be presented to the City.

Our Aim

The Guitar Series 7.1 will be auctioned, along with other items , to raisemoney for organisations within the Arts Community.

Many small Arts establishments and events do not get a great deal of funding and following the February earthquake are struggling to find venues or rebuild their equipment.

We want to raise as much money as we can to help these organisations get back on their feet.

These places form the heart and soul of Christchurch to countless people in the community; a place to gather, to be entertained, learn and be moved, but more importantly, they represent our history and we are passionate about retaining this history for Cantabrians.

Fly My Pretties 4

Heart Strings are delighted to have been chosen as one of the supported causes by Fly My Pretties for their Australasian Tour which is taking place in October and November 2011.

Fly My Pretties is a multimedia musical show, set in a theatre environment, starring New Zealand’s finest, undiscovered and popular contemporary musicians. The focus is on original music and artistic collaboration, but the surrounding themes and aesthetics have made it much more of an experience than just a concert. Since its inception in 2004 Fly My Pretties has released three live-recorded albums, all of which have reached platinum sales status. The band has played live to more than 80,000 fans and on TV to more than 900,000 fans over the last six years.

Fly My Pretties will adopt and take the Epicenter Guitar on tour and they intend to play it and include it in their exhibition (with images of all the guitars). The result will be to raise awareness for the Heart Strings gala dinner and auction on November 24 and raise funds for Heart Strings via donations. Then on November 24 at the gala dinner and auction Fly My Pretties will play the guitars alongside other NZ legends with Christchurch roots such as Tiki Taane, Bic Runga, Andrew Penman and more.
