Following the protocol ribbon cutting ceremony Randa Dammous Pharaon, HORECA project manager, expressed her pleasure to have France as the “Country of Honor” explaining that fifteen companies where grouped under the "France Pavilion" to promote French hospitality management expertise in the fields of food, wines, spirits, culinary products, materials and services. The highlight of this year’s inauguration was the signing of the Beirut Capital of Taste charter. In doing so, Fady Abboud, caretaker Minister of Tourism; Mohamad Choucair, President of Commerce, Industry, and Agriculture of Beirut and Mount Lebanon; Naamat Frem, President of the Association of Lebanese Industrialists; Pierre Achkar, President of the Federation for Tourism Association and President of Lebanese Hotel Association; Paul Ariss, President of the Syndicate of Owners of Restaurants, Cafes, Night Clubs and Pastries; Georges Nassrawoui, President of the Syndicate of Lebanese Food Industries; Nouhad Dammous, President of ADFTH, and Joumana Dammous Salamé, Managing Director of Hospitality Services, all united to put Beirut on the map as a world leader with its international standards in terms of innovation, inspiration, know-how and conviviality. “We are thrilled to have this charter finally signed”, said Salamé, “We have been working on this plan for the past 3 years, and we strongly believe that Lebanon will be up to the title [of Capital of Taste].” By bringing together European and Middle Eastern countries and strengthening Lebanon’s international bonds, HORECA serves as an economic boost adding to the development of the country attracting thousands of visitors yearly. Hospitality Services Annual Awards sets the seal on HORECA 2011

COFFEE CATWALK WINNERSConceptualized in 2010 as the ChocolateCatwalk, this year’s 18 dress CoffeeCatwalk is the creation of Esmod students,a school of fashion in the heart of Beirut,and Randa Dammous Pharaon projectmanager Horeca Lebanon. Sporty, elegant,funky and dramatic designs weresponsored by the coffee industry. ForNescafé the winner was Bashar Assaf, forLaVazza Elio Abou Faycal and for BaristaBedros Seghomonian. The judging panelincluded André Békhazi ALBA, NicoleMalhamé Harfouche ALBA, AdolpheYoussevitch ALBA and Viken SeikeldjianAtelier Viken s.a.r.l

ADFTH president Nouhad Dammous,and Hospitality Services managingdirector Joumana Dammous Salamé,presented this year’s HospitalityServices Annual Awards during aglittering ceremony at Le Royal Hotel onThursday March 31.

The 2011 LifetimeAchievement Awards went to HE Fady Abboud, theLebanese caretaker Minister of Tourism, HE Zaid Goussous the JordanianMinister of Tourism, Michel de Bustrosof Chateau Kefraya, Serge Hochar ofChateau Musar and Zafer Chaoui ofChateau Ksara.

All of these notable recipients havedemonstrated throughout their long anddistinguished careers a lifelongcommitment to excellence in thehospitality and food services industry. Allof them have worked tirelessly topromote iconic products and servicesthat signify quality, and each has actedas a goodwill ambassador for theirnation.

In a surprise move Nouhad Dammouswas himself presented with aLifetime AchievementAward for his inexhaustiblecontribution to the hospitality industryfrom the International Hotel andRestaurant association by its presidentGhassan Aidi.

Student Anthony El Khoury waschosen out of numerous students from17 Lebanese universities to receive theNouhad Dammous StudentExcellency Award 2011. ElKhoury, a student at Sagesse UniversityFaculty of Hospitality Management alsoreceived a check of 5,000 USD fromDammous himself, in recognition of hisoutstanding performance and academicresults. For the second year in a row, astudent from the faculty was therecipient of this award.

At the center of an entire arena of winerybooths dedicated to promoting the Lebanesewine industry – be it large wineries or boutiqueand vintage newcomers – the Wine Lab shonea light on all newcomers.

In order to further push the newcomers andbaby boomers alike, the Wine Lab, which tookplace at HORECA, held blind and revealedwine tasting competitions that took placeover a four day period. Amateurs and the presstook part in a revealed tasting, whereas wineprofessionals and connoisseurs took part in ablind tasting. Each day brought to the table aspecific type of wine from all the Lebaneselabels presented at HORECA. The first dayintroduced white wine, the second rosé andlight red wines, the third full bodied red wines,and finally sparkling wines and Arak. Animatedand hosted by Najib Moutran, sommelier andconsultant, Terroirs Conseils, the idea was tointroduce the public to the different notesinvolved in wine tasting.

For the first time in Lebanon a competitionwas held to find the best wine waiter and thebest restaurant wine list. Entrants from bo thhotels and restaurants nationwide vied for thetop prize. After much deliberation, the bestwine list was won by Soho Restaurant inBeirut’s Achrafieh district.

It all went down at 4 pm on April 1, duringa mix & match “head to head” lockdownheld at HORECA. The fierce competitionbetween the region’s best bartenders,trying an assortment of mixtures using thebest Bacardi Flavors in the world, in anattempt to reach the ultimate BacardiSuperior Rum Legacy cocktail.
