Wellness services is ticket to a long, healthy lifeBy Cheri Brubaker

For The Tribune

While modern medicine offers treatment for the symptoms of illness, most often in the

form of medication or surgery, other modalities exist for both treatment and prevention. "Exercise is really at the top of the list for treating any type of condition, even cancer and other life-threaten-ing, or oftentimes, life-ending condi-tions," said Darren Volk, a physical therapist at Dosher Physical Therapy Associates of Clayton. "You can actu-ally reduce the effects of chemothera-py and other treatments that break down the system by doing exercise.

"So if you look across the board with cancer, heart disease, osteopo-rosis, arthritis, all sorts of things, exercise helps to combat those condi-tions and acts to improve function and maintain health." Volk explained how exercise improves the body's ability to move and function by improving circula-tion to the tissues, particularly the muscles and the joints. The move-ment of exercise improves the pro-duction of synovial fluid, the body's natural joint lubricant, which pro-motes the healing process. "Exercise makes you feel better. You also get endorphin releases, chemicals in your bloodstream that

basically help combat ailments, as well as just make you feel better in general," Volk said. "Exercise helps to reduce depression and various other ailments. It is very important for everyone to exercise at any age. "We're encouraging folks with diet and other lifestyle changes as far as minding posture or watching various activities that might put them at risk. Certainly, there's an education process that's involved, as well." Pinnacle Health and Wellness, adjacent to Dosher Physical Therapy Associates, offers several wellness programs: cardiac rehabilitation, nutrition, weight loss, osteoporosis, fall prevention and health informa-

tion sessions. Qualified staff assist in creating an individualized exer-cise program on the latest exercise equipment. Reasonable monthly rates for both individuals and cou-ples are available. The Amara Center, located on the Mountain Lakes Medical Center campus, offers health and wellness services to the community. Wellness education is a cornerstone of the Amara Center. "We are educating people about functional and alternative medi-cine." said Irene Bynum, spa direc-tor at the Amara Center. It partners with Rabun Technology Works! in offering a series of talks called Evenings with the Doc. Dr. Abhisheck Gaur recently explored the common causes of heart disease, measures one can take to prevent the disease and cur-rent treatment options. The free pre-sentations are held Tuesday eve-nings in the auditorium in the Amara Center. The Amara Center is a nicely appointed facility, the only medi-spa of its kind in Northeast Georgia. It offers therapeutic rejuvenation treatments for the face and body. While more a spa than a work out facility, there is currently a hatha yoga class offered at 5 p.m. Thursdays in the exercise studio. A personal trainer is available by appointment. Massage options include thera-peutic Swedish, deep tissue mas-sage, and manual lymphatic drain-age. Unique to the area, MLD is "an effective way of cleansing toxins from a person's body," Bynum explained. The benefits of MLD

include fibromyalgia pain manage-ment, stimulating the immune sys-tem and sinus decongestion. The massage helps to relieve stress, depression and insomnia. Anti-aging services available include an array of facials, peels, and injections of botox and Juvederm. Nail care services include manicure, therapeutic pedi-cure and hot oil treatment. Bynum said that pedicure baths were per-formed in antimicrobial copper

tubs, eliminating the risk of infec-tion, which is important to diabetic clients. As awareness of the benefits of prevention become more widely recognized, people will lead longer, healthier lives. Improving one's diet, exercising, minimizing stress and educating oneself can reduce the need for conventional medical treatments. Visiting a wellness cen-ter might be the first step in that direction.

Clayton Medical offers specialty care

By Shelby HarrellStaff Writer

Clayton Medical Associates is a family-oriented medical group that provides a range of medi-

cal specialties to residents in Rabun County. Clayton Medical is an affiliate of Toccoa Clinic Medical Associates, which has been providing medical care throughout Northeast Georgia for 65 years. Rabun native Dr. Timothy Scott Beck recently was hired by Toccoa Clinic to join the medical group in Clayton. Beck, who relocated to

Clayton Medical last August, said he was happy to return to his home-town. He had been living in South Carolina for the past three years. “It’s been great to come back,” he said. “It’s been like a family reunion every single day. It was always my intent to return to Rabun County. I’m in a position in the community to be able to stay here and prosper for a long time.” Beck specializes in internal medi-cine, which involves treating patients and helping to prevent diseases in adults. “I take medicine very seriously,

and I take my patients very serious-ly,” he said. “When I see a patient, I treat them so it minimizes the effects of adverse reactions. I try to listen to them and work with them so they will be happy and healthy.” Office manager Cathy Stiles said Clayton Medical provided services in dermatology, obstetrics and gynecol-ogy, audiology, pediatrics, otolaryn-gology and family practice. “Many providers who come over to Clayton Medical are providers in Toccoa,” she said. “They come to Clayton to make it more convenient for their patients to see them. Clinic opened up a satellite office in Clayton to be more convenient and started adding different specialties. We’re trying to become as much full service as possible.” Stiles said Clayton Medical treated both young and elderly patients. Dermatology and family practice currently are the two busiest special-ties, she said. Beck said he currently worked extended hours in the evenings from 6-8 p.m. to accommodate adult patients who work during the day. Beck, who has been a practicing physician for about nine years, has received experience while running a private practice and while working in a hospital and as a nursing home medical manager. “Primary care has alway been my home, as well as Clayton, Georgia and Rabun County,” he said. Clayton Medical accepts more than 25 different insurance plans, including both Medicare and Medicaid.

Healthy habits for kidsIf eating healthier and getting

more exercise tops your to-do list, consider extending these worth-

while goals to the whole family. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, childhood obesity in the United States has more than tripled over the past 30 years. But you can help your family get the right nutrition and exercise to stay healthy. “Not only is it extremely impor-tant for kids to get all the vitamins, nutrients and physical activity they need to stay healthy, but habits formed early in life — both good and bad — can last a lifetime,” said Dr. Thomas McInerny, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The AAP is offering some healthy living tips for parents to help kids get on the right track: Improving eating habits:

You may have bad childhood mem-ories of being forced to sit at the table until you cleaned your plate. Don’t perpetuate this method of mealtime management. It sends the wrong message by emphasizing quantity over quality and can lead to significant overeating. Foster a healthier attitude toward food by focusing on what you serve in the first place. Establish a routine with regular meal and snack times. Always eat meals at the table. Children who eat meals with their family consume more fruits, vegetables, fiber, calci-um-rich foods and vitamins. Once kids are old enough, encourage self-feeding as much as possible. Avoid soda, which is full of empty calories or artificial sweeteners. Milk and water are the best drink choices for your child. Offer whole

milk or 2 percent milk to children ages 12 months to 2 years old, unless your pediatrician recommends low-fat milk. After age 2, offer low-fat milk. Limit juice to four to six ounc-es a day. Kids can be picky at first, but don’t let a refusal of a new food stop you from trying again. Offer new foods multiple times in multiple ways. For infants, you may need to even try 10 to 15 times over several months. Parents are extremely influ-ential and can serve as a child’s best role model. Eat a variety of foods of different flavors, colors and textures. Encourage active play: Don’t let a full day go by without active play. Take trips to the park, play in the yard, go for walks and make physical activity a part of your family’s daily routine. Reduce the amount of time spent in devices that

restrain movement, such as strollers and bouncy seats. Limit screen time, including TV, video games and computers, to less than two hours a day. Avoid placing computers or television sets in chil-dren’s bedrooms so they can get the best sleep possible. Encourage your kids to take part in sports teams, gymnastic and dance classes, and other activities that will get them moving. “No matter how old your child is, it’s never too early to establish household routines that foster healthy habits.” McInerny said.
