Headmaster Welcome Back to Term 3 Welcome back to all of our families to Term 3. I hope that you all enjoyed the break from the busyness of School Term and that our students are ready to face the challenges of the ‘premiership’ Term 3. During the holidays all parents will have received Semester Reports giving an indication of each student’s progress over the first half of the year. Each report contained feedback about what students have been doing well as well as advice on areas to work on. I encourage our students to act on this advice, and to discuss it with their teachers if necessary. There is also an opportunity to discuss your son’s progress at the coming Parent/Teacher Interviews, which commenced with the Year 6 and 8 evening this week. For our Year 12 students this term represents the last intensive period of learning and skill development before their final exams early in Term 4. I am sure that they will make the most of the time left to them. Staff Professional Development Day On Monday 13 July all staff came together in a day of professional development and training. The focus of the day was Department based and provided the opportunity for teachers to build on their mastery of their fields as well as to reflect on pedagogy. Thanks to Mr John Tuckfield, our Director of Studies, for organising the day, and also to our Heads of Departments who helped to facilitate a most useful and thought-provoking day of discussions. Traffic and Parking As we start a new Term, can I please remind all parents about my request that you drop your sons off to School some distance away and let them walk to the campus. Highfield Ave remains a highly problematic area – this narrow, dead-end street quickly becomes clogged if parents attempt to enter it and turn around mid way. Our boys are perfectly capable of walking the distance from Chatfield Avenue to the School and parents would find it a much less stressful and easy drop off if we all kept out of Highfield Avenue completely! In addition, parents are reminded that it is illegal to stop or park on the western side of Parkside Avenue, and we have been informed that Council Officers intend to enforce this rule in the near future. Thank you for your continued patience as our Building Project proceeds. The final product will be worth the short term pain, but I do ask again that we are especially mindful of our neighbours’ amenity during this construction period. Holiday Activities I am also grateful to our staff members who gave their time during the holidays to further enrich our students by participating in the many and varied activities that occur during term break. In particular our students had the opportunity to visit Gallipoli, to undertake Cadet leadership courses or to develop their skiing skills. Exchange Students It is our pleasure to welcome six exchange students to our learning community who arrived in Melbourne during the term break and will be staying with School families. The Monash Scholars ProgramThe Monash Scholars Program helps high-achieving secondary school students develop and excel, both academically and personally. Scholars explore and pinpoint their passions, and develop a broad suite of study skills. Through the program, which is ongoing over Years 10, 11 and 12, they will also build a personal network of peers and academics that will last through to university. This year we congratulate Nicholas Tjangdjaja, Matthew James and Adrian Xu who were selected as our Monash Scholars for 2015.

Scholars of the School At the start of the year, we recognised students who excelled in their Semester 2 subjects last year, with current Year 12 students, who performed very well across all their Year 11 subjects, being recognised as ‘Scholars of the School’.Each year we consider the Year 12 mid-year results to see if there are other students who have achieved equally well in the first semester of their final year, and who merit inclusion in this group. This semester the following six boys do so, they were congratulated and presented with the Certificates and Scholar Badges at yesterday’s Assembly:Farouk Al-Salihi Shawn LiYimin LuGerry McGrathHugh SlifirskiJames Yang

Parent Education Seminar A reminder that our next Parent Education Seminar, ‘What Parents Don’t Know About the Online World’ will take place at 7.30pm on Monday 20 July 2015, in the Performing Arts Centre. Our guest speaker on the evening will be Ms Sue Ellson, an Independent Linkedln Specialist and Private Consultant who will provide strategies, practical tips and advice. I do encourage you to attend this free seminar. Further information is included in a flyer later in this Bulletin. Our Careers Counsellor, Ms Lynette Reiger, is organising this seminar.

Year 10 Head of House and Parent/Student EveningOn Tuesday 28 July there will be an opportunity for Year 10 students and parents to meet with Heads of House to discuss academic progress over the course of the year to date. This evening will also officially launch our subject selection process for Year 10. Parents and students will also have the opportunity to speak with members of staff teaching VCE subjects in order to help them decide which subjects they wish to pursue.During the evening there will be two general information sessions – one at 6.00pm and another at 7.30pm in the Middleton Theatre in the PAC. Our Year 11 Coordinator, Dr Jack Smith and our Careers Counsellor, Ms Lynette Reiger and I will speak about the VCE in general terms and also about the principles of good decision making. We ask that all Year 10 families attend one of these sessions, and to fit other discussions with Heads of House and subject experts (who will be available from 6.30 pm) around that session. It is hoped that the interviews, your son’s most recent School Report, the Information Session and the discussions you have with staff at the subject booths, will provide you with the necessary information to begin the process of subject selection.Today you will have received an email detailing the process for booking a meeting with your son’s Head of House. If you did not receive this email, please contact Ms Michelle Perna in our Student Records Office on 9835 1777.

Agendo 2015 - Opening NightOn Wednesday 5 August, at 6.30pm, Camberwell Grammar School will again proudly open our biennial Art Competition, Agendo, at St Heliers Street Gallery, at The Abbotsford Convent in Abbotsford. Our school has a strong tradition of promoting the arts, and this competition attempts to provide practical encouragement to young artists who are pursuing a career in this area. We are pleased that artists from all over Australia have accepted our invitation and provided us with a wonderful, diverse and exciting exhibition. We once again, thank Peter Crone Architects for their support and very generous prize of $10,000 to this year’s winning artist.I invite you to come, support and encourage our young artists by joining us on the opening evening. If you are not able to attend on the Opening Night there will still be an opportunity for you to attend the exhibition, which runs until Wednesday 12 August.

Blokes’ Book BreakfastAs part of our Book Week celebrations the Weickhardt Library will be holding a special breakfast for Middle and Senior School boys and their fathers on Monday 24 August at 7.00am. This year we are very lucky to have Mr Phillip Gwynne, as our guest speaker. Mr Gwynne is a highly acclaimed author whose book, Deadly Unna?, was made into the feature film Australian Rules. Since then he has gone on to write more young adult novels, including Swerve, and the very popular epic thriller series, The Debt, as well as a novel for adults and picture books. His particular passion is encouraging boys to read. Please make a note of this date in your diary, and join us for a delicious breakfast and the chance to hear Mr Gwynne speak about his writing. Further information and booking details will be included in a flyer attached with next week’s Bulletin.

Middle SchoolWelcome to Term 3It was great to see the boys looking refreshed and healthy after the holiday break. We have certainly hit the ground running and there is much to look forward to in the coming weeks. Our Projec10 teams have been active over the holidays and there are still food stalls and other exciting activities running for the next few weeks. We have follow up meetings with the girls’ schools next week and all money raised should be submitted by the end of Week 5.We have two rounds of Winter Sport remaining before we move into the Spring season. I encourage Middle School boys to join the School Athletics or Water Polo squads once their Winter commitments conclude. Term 3 also sees the launch of debating season, with the Inter-Form and Inter-School competitions running throughout the term. The House Sport competition is also re-ignited with the Cross Country Cup up for grabs.I am very much looking forward to the Middle School Production, Haroun and the Sea of Stories, in Week 5. More information, including ticketing procedures, will be available over the coming weeks. As well as all of this we have a chess competition, a student run five-a-side soccer competition and various mathematics competitions occurring throughout the term. All in all, there is a great deal to look forward to.

Visitors from ChinaOn Thursday we were lucky enough to host 42 students and 3 teachers from Nanjing, Xi’an and Suzhou in China. Our boys proved to be excellent hosts and the students from China spent time in classrooms mixing with Camberwell Grammar boys. The day concluded with a Question and Answer session in the Middleton Theatre, which proved to be a great success.

Parent/Teacher EveningsI enjoyed meeting Year 6 and 8 parents last night and it was great to see a number of boys attending the interviews with their parents. Students are always welcome to attend the evenings, as the meetings can be a rich source of feedback for them. The Year 7 evening will be held on Wednesday 12 August (Week 5), with booking details to be sent out the week prior.

Friday Activities and Outdoor EducationOn Friday a new round of activities will commence. I encourage those boys involved in the Outdoor Education program to bring appropriate winter attire with them, particularly when involved in the water-based sports. Cotton garments are not appropriate in the current

Rob French, Head of Middle School

Junior SchoolWelcome back to Semester Two. I trust that the holiday break provided time for some respite from the winter ills and a chance to re-energise and prepare for the term ahead. The boys have grown considerably in many ways over the course of the year, and this halfway point provides an ideal opportunity to look back at what has been achieved, as well as to look forward with the intention of making the most of the opportunities ahead. Congratulations again to our Year 3 to 5 boys for the absolutely delightful production of Porridge. Through the rehearsals and practice sessions, the boys learnt many valuable lessons and grew in stature and confidence, as well as learning many skills and stagecraft competencies. I am very grateful to all parents for the support you gave this endeavour, and particularly to those marvellous parents who gave so generously of their time assisting with costumes and stage preparations.

I am sure you have taken time to read your son’s report and have discussed it with him, what he did well as well as areas that deserve greater attention or a different approach or attitude. The Parent/Teacher interviews, to be conducted next week, will provide an opportunity for clarification and collaboration.Term 3 includes some wonderful events including Science Day, Book Week, Cross Country, Soiree, Athletics Trials, Poem in Your Pocket, as well as class excursions and incursions, and, of course, Parent/ Teacher conferences. Yes, it is good to be back and I am looking forward to the term ahead with all that it promises.

Parent/Teacher ConferencesParent/Teacher Conferences will be held next week on Wednesday 3.40pm to 9.00pm and Thursday 3.40pm to 6.00pm. To keep boys and siblings safe we request they are adequately supervised during interview times. Please note, due to government regulations boys who are not booked into Aftercare cannot join this group in outside play. As the Library will used for interviews it will also be also unavailable. Please contact Mrs Diane Collins in the Junior School if you have any difficulty attending your nominated interviews.

Junior School Cross CountryOn Wednesday 29 July all boys in Years 3, 4 and 5 will participate in the Junior School House Cross Country at Camberwell Grammar Junior School (Anniversary Bike Track below Norge) from 2.15pm to 3.00pm.Year 5: Assemble 2.15pm – Race begins at 2.30pmYears 3 and 4: Assemble 2.30pm – Race begins at 2.40pmAll boys are reminded to wear correct House Sport Uniform, including shorts. Tracksuit pants are not to be worn during the event. Boys should bring their asthma medication if necessary.

Howard Kelly, Head of Junior School

SportWelcome back to School and Winter Sport. There are two rounds to go with the final training session being held on Friday 24 July and the final match on Saturday 25 July. The Cross Country Squad will continue for a further week with their training and one more competition on Saturday 1 August. Spring Sports will also continue their training and competitions (Fencing, Snowsports and Taekwondo).

Any boy interested in joining the Camberwell Grammar Athletics Squad should see Mr David Rayner as soon as possible. Summer pre-season information will also start to appear over the next few weeks, so please stay tuned and contact me at [email protected] for any further questions or clariciation.

Swap Shop Opening times The Swap Shop will be open each Wednesday from 3.00pm - 4.30pm and every Saturday from 10.00am - 12noon. We look forward to seeing you in the shop very soon! The Swap Shop is selling old style football jumpers for $5.00. These tops are only to be worn for training sessions but can be worn while training for all the winter sports, particularly the outdoor based activities of football, soccer and hockey. Using these tops for training means that the regulation tops can be kept clean and dry for the weekend matches, saving time and washing mid-week! We have predominately long sleeved versions in stock, but we do have a few sleeveless tops available - first in best dressed for these though! What parents don’t know about the online world…. !Did you know that:

• 90% of jobs are not advertised

• 70% of hiring managers do an internet search before hiring

• Most people will ‘Google You’ after they have met you or been referred to you (including co-workers, friends, future clients and even other parents!)

What happens when someone Google’s your name? (parent or student)

Do you want your details to be kept private or do you want to control the impression people gather from an internet search?

!Sue Ellson, an Independent LinkedIn Specialist and private consultant will share how to:

•Improve your Google search results

•Manage your personal brand online

•Understand the importance of keywords and online activity

•Maximise LinkedIn, Google Plus and other social media

CGS Hockey - Bonded Polar fleece full zip jacket. In an effort to find a warm alternative for those winter mornings waiting for the game to start or while the boys are on the bench, Friends of Hockey have organised for polar fleeces to be made up with the School emblem. We have sizes small to large in stock, the XL and 2XL have already sold out and we will be taking orders for larger sizes for our next production run.

The Polar Fleece is the heaviest fabric we have been able to source (350gsm), it will provide a lot of warmth and it should also offer a degree of wind protection. They will be available for $40.00 each which is below cost as Friends of Hockey are paying for the embroidery and the set-up. The sizing is shown in the table below however from the samples we have received so far the size is not overly generous. The chest measurement is directly under the arms and is the exact size of the jacket it is therefore worth taking into account that the boys will be wearing tops underneath. The length is from the top of the collar to the bottom of the jacket. Trying one of the samples to check sleeve length and body fit is the best way of determining the size required. The Polar Fleeces will be at the Development Office. Additional information call or email Louise Brown 0409 176 223
