Headmaster End of Term 3 As we come to the end of another very busy term, I wish all of our families a relaxing and safe break from school routines for the next three weeks. In particular, I wish our Year 12 students well as they enter the final stages of preparation for their VCE Unit 3 and 4 examinations soon after they return in Term 4. The third week of this coming break will see most of the Year 12s involved in practice examinations held at the school under full examination conditions. I am very grateful to our senior staff who make their time available for our students in this way to ensure they have the best possible preparation for the examination period. I encourage each student to prepare as fully as possible for these practice sessions – the more complete the preparation the more the benefit to be derived from the practice. Our new Sports Complex continues to make good progress, as the development continues towards the southern end of the building site, the main sports building is now clearly beginning to take shape. A large crane has been on site in recent days to assist in erecting a number of pre-fabricated concrete walls to the main building, and this will continue for some time. These last few weeks have been particularly exciting for staff and students as the major facilities (50-metre swimming pool, two basketball courts and gymnasium) begin to appear. I am sure we will notice more big changes when we return in three weeks time! We have had a very successful term in achieving wonderful results in Sport, Music, Debating, Public Speaking, Performance and Academic examinations and competitions, and we are looking forward to another busy and successful term after a good rest. Parking on Barnsbury Road As parents have previously been advised, dropping off and picking up students in Barnsbury Road, particularly adjacent to the Junior School, is not only dangerous but also illegal. Parallel parking on Barnsbury Road at the bridge and the bends is prohibited opposite the continuous white line down either side of the road. The City of Boroondara has advised they will patrol this area and issue on the spot fines to offenders. Please ensure you do not stop and drop or pick up in the vicinity, not only due to traffic regulations but also to ensure the safety of your son, pedestrians and other vehicles. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Open Day – Saturday 10 October A reminder that our annual Open Day will be taking place on the first Saturday of next Term, commencing at 10.00am with Food Stalls, Subject Displays and Demonstrations, and Sports Matches throughout the day. At 1.00pm the School Cadet Unit will be holding its Passing Out Parade. This event involves both the Cadet Unit and the School Senior Concert Band on the Keith Anderson Oval. Open Day gives our School the chance to showcase our School to the broader community. Staff and students will be here to help with all the activities, and to celebrate our community. It would be great to see as many of you there as possible. Summer Uniform During Term 4 and Term 1, students in the Middle and Senior Schools have the option of wearing summer uniform. Shorts of the approved style may be worn instead of long trousers. The blazer becomes an optional item of uniform. Boys need not wear their blazers to and from school nor at formal school events. The pullover must not be worn as the outermost garment in place of the blazer. Boys who wear shorts must keep their long walk socks firmly in place with garters. To that end, can I please ask that you check your son’s socks to ensure that they are the knee length style and not the short or mid-length style. I do appreciate the efforts that parents make to cooperate fully with the school with regard to the appearance of our boys. We can all take great pride in the fact that the vast majority of Camberwell Grammar students wear their uniforms properly, not only at school, but also on the way to and from school. Australian Mathematical OlympiadCongratulations to Charlies Li (Year 9) who recently sat the Australian Mathematical Olympiad and was awarded a Distinction award. This is an outstanding achievement as only 100 students Australia wide were invited to sit the contest and only a small number of these are awarded a Distinction award.

DAV Debating Grand FinalThe Swannie Award is the Debaters Association of Victoria’s prize for the best debater at each year level in each region. In the C Grade competition, and based on the regional debates, our congratulations to this year’s ‘Swannie’ goes to Vignesh Alagappan (Year 10). The School has produced many fine debaters over the years, and Vignesh has proved to be one of the best. Vignesh will receive his Award at a Ceremony to be held on Monday 12 October.

University of NSW, Australian School of Business Economics CompetitionThe University of New South Wales Australian Business School Economics competition is held in May every year. Over 8,000 entries are received from across Australia, and overseas, including New Zealand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. It is a very difficult 50-minute competition, as students are examined on a range of economic topics. This is particularly so for Year 11 students having little formal instruction in some of the topics quizzed. The multiple choice format penalises students for incorrect answers, so careful judgement needed to be exercised with reference to which questions are attempted. The competition was conducted in two divisions: Junior for Year 11 and Senior for Year 12. Camberwell Grammar School entered 105 Students with the following results: 32 Credits, 15 Distinctions and 3 High Distinctions. Congratulations to the following students who received a High Distinction, and were presented with their certificates at yesterday’s Assembly:

Jack Dalrymple (Year 12)

Thomas Oliver (Year 12)

Leo Wan (Year 11)

Long Tan Leadership AwardsThe Australian Defence Force seeks nominations each year for the Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Awards, an initiative of the Australian Government. The ADF is committed to promoting personal development, leadership and teamwork in senior secondary school students. To meet the awards criteria, students must be currently in Years 10 and 12, demonstrate leadership and teamwork within the school or the broader community whilst also displaying strong values such as respect for others, striving for their best and ‘mateship’. At yesterday’s Assembly I was pleased to announce this year’s awardees, each of whom received a certificate and bursary:

Year 10 – Joshua Cooper

Year 12 – Matthew Waters

ICAS – Science CompetitionIn Term 2, a large number of Camberwell Grammar School students competed in the International Science Competition. The event attracted over 1.5 million entries from across Australia and the Asia-Pacific, with 20 High Distinction Certificates awarded earlier this term. Congratulations to Charles Li (Year 9) and Howard Yang (Year 10) two worthy Senior School students who will be presented with their Medals at an official awards ceremony later in the year.

Chinese Writing and Speaking CompetitionLast Friday, Oscar Lu (Year 10) participated in the Chinese Writing and Speaking Competition organised by Chinese Language Teachers Association in Victoria. This competition was designed for students with some Chinese background, and students were asked to write an essay on the spot and then deliver it to the audience. Congratulations to Oscar who performed very well and won the third prize.

Water PoloCongratulations to our Open Water Polo ‘A’ Team who had their first win against Melbourne High ‘A’ Team last Saturday. Sam Pastellas (Year 12) was presented with the AGS Water Polo Trophy at yesterday’s Assembly.

Victoria (Metro) U17 Cricket TeamCongratulations and best wishes to Andrew Young (Year 11) who has been chosen in the Victoria (Metro) U17 Cricket team. Andrew will be heading off to Brisbane later this month to compete in the National Cricket Championships.

Middle SchoolTerm 3It has been another busy and successful term in Middle School. Today at our final Assembly we heard reports on Athletics, Snowports, Water Polo and Debating. We also presented prizes to our two grand final teams from the Street Soccer Competition and once again acknowledged the combined fundraising effort with Camberwell Girls’ Fintona and PLC that raised over $14,000. When you also consider that the Middle School Play and the two amazing music concerts were features of this term, you can gauge how vibrant and energised the community has been throughout Term 3. I would like to congratulate the boys on a wonderful term and I hope that they manage to get some well-earned rest over the holidays. I would also like to thank the Middle School Teachers, particularly our Form Teachers for their superb efforts throughout the term. Finally, I would like to thank our Middle School parents for supporting their sons and the school so well throughout the term and I hope that the holiday period proves to be relaxing and rewarding.

Roystead AwardsOn Monday we had the privilege of presenting Roystead Awards to 30 Year 8 students. I congratulate the award winners and look forward to witnessing their continued leadership within the community next term.

United Nations Security Council Moot CourtOn Monday a group of Year 8 boys participated in this intense and fascinating experience. Students adopted a country on the UN Security Council and argued for or against resolutions based on their country’s policies. Well done to Lachlan Doig and Oliver Papillo (Chad), Dean Roff and Liam Naser (France) and Oliver Anderson, Thomas Coulter, Avanish Yogaramanan and James Gunasegaram, who acted as officials.

Tournament of MindsCongratulations to Lachlan Karunaratne, William Murray, Oliver Powell (Year 7), Thomas Coulter, James Gunasegaram, Hilton Xie and Avanish Yogaramanan (Year 8) for their efforts in this year’s Tournament of Minds. The boys worked hard preparing for their challenge, which involved them having to eliminate a famous person from history and manage the consequences of their decision. They were then given seven letters and asked to make up a new word, complete with definition and meaning. The boys worked hard each Friday afternoon throughout the term and seemed to thoroughly enjoy the experience.

Victorian Short Course Swimming ChampionshipsTwo of our Year 7 boys, Peter Zhao and Jasper Fodor, recently competed at the Victorian Short Course Swimming Championships at MSAC. Both posted excellent times in their events, which placed them in the top 30 swimmers in the state.

Year 7 Maths Games DayWe entered two Year 7 teams into the Maths Games Day at Wesley on Monday. Both teams fared well, finishing ninth and eleventh respectively out of the 40 teams entered. Well done to Tory Crosgrove, Daniel Duong, Jamie Garnham, Jack Schwenk, Nathan Shi, Philip Wang, Sonny Wang and Steven Wenas.

Australian Mathematics Competition Perfect ScoreFurther to last week’s notice about our outstanding results from this Australian Mathematics Competition, we are now able to announce that Oliver Papillo (Year 8) received a perfect score in this prestigious competition. This is a wonderful result that only nine students across Victoria were able to achieve. Oliver has been invited to Government House in Perth to receive a medal later this year.

Church ServiceWe enjoyed a special service at St Mark’s yesterday to celebrate the end of term. With a focus on compassion and giving, it was great that Mike Schumann and Angus Yu (Year 11) were able to join us to share their experiences from the 40 Hour Famine. We were also treated to the 180 strong Middle School Choir singing the chorus from The Creation by Haydn. Thanks also to Ms Amanda Fair’s string quartet of Jamie Steverlynck, Linus Opat, William Wang and Thomas Lee, who set the scene with a range of pieces to commence the service.

Australian Boys Choir TourJamie Steverlynck (Year 8) and Arman Cakmakcioglu (Year 7) will tour New Zealand with the Australian Boys Choir during the second and third weeks of the holidays. Highlights will include singing a program of Australian works at Wanganui Collegiate’s beautiful Chapel and at St Andrew’s On the Terrace in Wellington. We wish the boys well for a successful tour.

Rob French, Head of Middle School

Junior School Last Friday the sun shone and fathers and sons basked in the fun and good cheer of the Father’s Day breakfast on the Junior School green. As always, the Friends of Norge and their many helpers ensured every aspect of the morning’s celebrations was done to perfection so the Dads could relax with their sons and enjoy the bright start to the day. The Middle School Stage Band played, the blossoms bloomed and boys of all ages enjoyed a hearty breakfast. Thank you to all the Dads who were able to attend and a huge thank you to the parents who worked so hard to make it a very special occasion. The boys were very proud and pleased to present their gift plate to Dad. Once again, Ms Ariela Nucci has helped the boys create something rather personal and special. Thank you Ms Nucci. The Father/Son photos will be sent out early in Term 4.

With the end of Term, the boys can look back with pride on all they have achieved and experienced over the past nine weeks. There have been many wonderful moments and activities that have seen the boys at their best, including: Science Day, House Cross Country, Book Week, ‘Poem in Your Pocket’, excursions, incursions, soirée, athletic trials, Mid-Year Concert, Assemblies, Father’s Day, class projects and competitions. It is time now to rest, reenergise and be ready for all that is in store during Term 4, commencing with Health Morning on Friday 9 October and Open Day on 10 October. Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday break.

Open Day Camberwell Grammar School Open Day is being held on Saturday 10 October from 10.00am until 2.00pm. On Open Day we will be offering performances, hands-on activities and displays in classrooms for students and visitors to our School. The Art Studio will also showcase students’ work. The animal farm returns for all the little ones and animal lovers. All boys, Prep to Year 5, are expected to attend for at least the duration of the activities in which they are participating. Any boys who have conflicting engagements are asked to notify Mr Howard Kelly in writing by the start of Term 4.

Health Morning Parent PresentationThis year the guest presenter at our Health Morning on Friday 9 October will be Ms Janet Etty-Leal. Janet has over 35 years experience in education. A key focus of Janet’s work is to teach meditation to children. She has worked with over 70 schools and educational organisations, including Monash, RMIT, Melbourne and Swinburne Universities, and has been the Meditation Consultant at Geelong Grammar School since 2009. Janet will be conducting a parent session on 9 October starting at 11.00am in the Quinn Theatre and concluding at noon. This will be an ideal opportunity for parents to get a better understanding of the mindfulness program and the benefits it has for all ages. If interested in attending please return the reply slip attached to the letter sent home this week.

Life EducationAs part of the Health curriculum the mobile van from Life Education Victoria will be visiting the Junior School from Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 October. During this time each class is scheduled to have a class lesson tailored to suit the needs of the students. Some examples of topics are healthy food choices, safety with medicines, passive smoking and issues relating to alcohol. A parent information session is being held on Tuesday 13 October 8.30am to 9.00am in the Life Education van. This session will enable parents to visit the Mobile Unit and see an audio-visual presentation that explains the topics discussed and the approach used by Life Education. These are extremely important, as the concepts introduced need to be reinforced both at home and at school. We hope you will join us for this session. If you are interested please fill in the sheet sent home with your child and return it as soon as possible.

SportWhat a tremendous effort from all students yesterday at the AGSV Athletics Finals. The team finished seventh overall but there were some amazing performances both on and off the track. Captain Harrison Lagastes (Year 12) was outstanding winning the 400m and 800m while placing third in the 1500m. A truly remarkable effort and act of leadership.

relevant information below pertaining to Summer Sport and always refer to the Camberwell Grammar Sport Facebook Page and Team App for further information. In relation to Term 4 Sport, your son will be in the year level above for Term 4 sport and then continue in that year level for Term 1, 2016. For example, if your son is in Year 7 this year (2015) then they will participate in Year 8 Sport for Term 4, 2015 and Year 8 Sport in Term 1, 2016. They will also move up in the team/sport they were in from last season in essence if your son was in 7B Tennis then they will be in 8B Tennis in Term 4, 2015 and Term 1, 2016. However, your son may have nominated for Firsts trials or if they would like to nominate for a different team (ie from the previous example – try for 8A Tennis for Term 4, 2015) then they need to see the Director of Sport Mr Jamie Watson and notify him of their interest to try for a higher team. This information will then be passed onto the coach and an email sent home regarding when that team will be training in order for your son to trial. Further information can be obtained via Facebook or emailing [email protected].

Sport Report

In Water Polo, the Junior Gold and Mitre Teams fought out two very close games in the classification matches on the weekend. Junior Gold pushed Trinity Green throughout the tight game but fell away late, losing 3-5, finishing sixth. Junior Mitre had another close game against Ivanhoe. With the scores level, 1-1 at half time, a last minute long range goal from Max Ramm (Year 8) sealed the victory and third place with only 60 seconds left on the clock. Finally it was up to the Junior Blue Team to take on Trinity Gold in the Grand Final. In a game where Trinity were the red hot favourites, our boys played well but were unable to steal the title.

The Intermediate Team went into the Grand Final undefeated, but were forced to accept second place after losing to Trinity 6-4. In a very exciting game, Will Exon (Year 10) played superbly in goals, whilst Aaron Campbell (Year 10) was also a significant presence in the pool. Lachlan Thompson (Year 9) and Jamie Forwood (Year 9) showed their determination and swimming ability, whilst Projit Banerjee and Matt James (both Year 10) demonstrated their experience, particularly in defence. Seeking to win the first Open Water Polo title in the School’s history, Camberwell started tentatively, conceding two unanswered goals in the first quarter. With the defence tightening up, a flurry of goals from Sam Pastellas (Year 12) and Chris Kerdemelidis (Year 10) put Camberwell in charge of the match. The team edged ahead in the second quarter and consolidated their lead in the second half, winning ten goals to seven. A wonderful end to the Year 12s sporting career at Camberwell, as man of the match, Sam Pastellas held the trophy aloft. The Taekwondo Squad went to the Melbourne Taekwondo Centre for the culmination of their season, hoping to reap the rewards of their long training build up. The team won 14 medals in total, with Sebastian Montemurro (Year 7), Richard Han (Year 9) and Thomas Thackray (Year 11) winning gold in their respective age groups. Wednesday saw the Athletics Squad compete at the AGSV Athletics Finals. A tough day for the squad saw Camberwell place 7th overall; however, some outstanding personal efforts sparkled in the Camberwell contingent. There were seventeen medals overall, with Ray Son (Year 8) and Connor McKee (Year 9) winning two silver medals apiece. Matthew James (Year 10) won bronze over 100m, 200m and shot put, whilst Dilina DeSilva (Year 9) finished third and second in the 100m hurdles and 200m respectively. The Open category, led by the Year 12s was the most pleasing sector, Neelan Josan and Joel Assauw (both Year 12) both won bronze in their event, whilst Joel Assauw, Shaveen Kariyawasam, Brandon Lam (both Year 11) and Miller Medina (Year 12) teamed up to win the day’s marquee event, the 4x 100m relay in a nail biting photo finish. The final Play of the Week for the year, and none more deserving, goes to Athletics Captain, Harry Lagastes (Year 12). Leading from the front, Harry won bronze over the 1500m, accompanied by Gold in both the 800m and 400m, leaving all other runners in his wake. With his endurance unparalleled, Harry put in a remarkable Captain’s effort.

MusicFrom the Director of MusicFollowing the ‘Tribute Concert’ to me last week I do want the School Community to know how overwhelmed and heartfelt I am for such a concert. I was not able to write last week, as my heart was too full to express anything that made sense. The amount of time, thought and organisation put into the event by so many people led by Dr Paul Hicks, Mrs Elizabeth Board and her team, the Music Staff Concert Committee and the Music Staff was quite incredible and I cannot thank them enough. I am in their debt for what they have done.To see so many Old Boys performing in various roles alongside current boys says so much about the School. Thank you to these Old Boys for making the time for this special night, many travelling from interstate. The current boys singing and playing at their absolute best that night was something they do all the time, but there was an extra piece of magic in them that night.

They could finally let the secrets out that they had maintained all these months so it would be a true surprise for everyone. Nathan Fong (Year 11) and Shawn Li (Year 12) were outstandingly professional in their concerto performances. The Concert and Stage Bands out-did themselves and the Orchestra’s playing has never been better. As I entered the auditorium there was an expectant silence, and then it burst forth…the opening fanfare and the gradual layering of Beethoven’s ‘9th Symphony’ to include the entire auditorium, quite simply floored me, and it grew from there…my life at Camberwell Grammar School flashed past for us all to enjoy. I am still processing all the elements and await the DVD to relive it all in quiet contemplation. As I said that night, it was a true celebration of this wonderful School where music brings us all together, and I am so fortunate to have been a part of it for so long. The procession of Captains of Music and their bouquets finished me off! Later that evening I was presented with a gold baton mounted in a beautiful case and I share with you the latin inscription; “He, as their father in the art will shape them, and like the old pilot will teach them of the shores they will sail to and the harbours where they may shelter,” - Quinitillian. The next morning at Assembly, Shawn Li presented me with a rugby jumper with my name and the year printed on it…as all the Year 12 Leavers will have in Term 4. How blessed am I to be treated in this way by so many. Thank you, thank you to everyone who was there that helped make my final, formal concert at Camberwell Grammar School an amazing and incredible memory for us all.

LibraryThe Library as a MakerspaceWith developments in technology and the way we find information, Libraries are evolving to be more than places where people only come to read and borrow books or use public computers. Many Libraries are moving down the path of providing ‘makerspaces’, spaces where people can come to work collaboratively on a project, learn new skills, or spend time with others who have a shared interest. In the Weickhardt Library we took our first steps towards providing a makerspace in Book Week. We set up some tables and put out a thousand-piece jigsaw with a literary theme. At first it attracted only boys in Middle School but within a couple of days a number of Senior School boys drifted over and started placing the pieces. The following days saw boys working on it before and after school, at recess and lunchtimes. Many different boys participated from both parts of the school and in just over a week the jigsaw was complete. Library staff members were surprised at the level of interest and collaboration the jigsaw attracted. Boys reported it was fun, a challenge and addictive. We are busy planning an activity we hope will be just as popular in term 4.

CGS Auxiliary Cake Stall Open Day - Saturday 10 October, 2015 (10.00am-2.00pm) Can you help? CGS Parents Auxiliary is calling on our school families to make a homemade cake, cupcakes, muffins, homemade jams, preserves, or sweets for the Open Day Cake Stall! Please drop off your freshly made goods in a sealed container from 8.30am on Open day to the school cafeteria, where we will package your items for selling. We will take your name and child’s year level for our records, in line with school policy. We will also ask you to circle from a list of options what ingredients were used. This is important as many people have allergies and food intolerances. Please also indicate if the item(s) are gluten free/dairy free etc. Due to health regulations we cannot accept any items with fresh cream, that need refrigeration or that have been previously frozen. Please follow standard food safety and hygiene guidelines when baking items. For more information: http://dofoodsafely.health.vic.gov.au/menu.php. There will be cake-packaging kits available from Jessie in the Development Office from Monday 5 October (first day of Term 4) for those that wish to package their items ready for sale. This is helpful but if you do not wish to, we are happy to do so at school. Do not worry about pricing your items, we will do this on the day. We are also calling on helpers on the day for packaging cakes for sale and to staff the stall. It will only be for an hour and is a great opportunity to get involved in a relaxed environment and to meet like minded parents. Please sign up on the attached roster if you can help on the day: https://www.volunteersignup.org/4DTLH If you are unable to bake for the cake stall or to help on the day but wish to make a donation instead, that would be most appreciated. All proceeds from the Cake Stall are collected by the Parents’ Auxiliary with funds being allocated equally across the school to enhance both curricular and co-curricular areas. I can be contacted by phone or email as below. Thank you in advance for helping to make the Open Day Cake Stall a success! Lee Thurlow Cake Stall Convenor [email protected] T: 0425 768 515
