We were all encouraged by well wishes before the show, particularly with the phrase

break a leg!...but do you know where it comes from?

The saying is actually a really positive wish for a great show...not a threat of imminent

    injury!

The side curtains in a theatre are known as legs. At the end of a successful show actors come back on stage again and again for their curtain calls, requiring the legs (curtains) to open and close many times, the pressure of repeat opening the curtains can cause them to break...meaning the show was so fantastic

we broke the curtains! Lara Ramrattan Oliver Director

From the moment the Creative Arts Department decided our school production was going to be Oliver there has been a buzz of anticipation amongst students (and staff). The

months of rehearsals and commitment to putting on a great show paid off this week...it was showtime! The company of actors, musicians, set painters, film crew and backstagers have put on a show that is phenomenal...dare we say one of the best yet...all three nights

    sold out!

Oliver is the last production for seventeen of our Year 13 students, many of whom have been involved in IGS shows since they arrived at school. We will miss the talents and

warmth of this group of young people and we hope they will be back soon to share with us their successes beyond IGS. We know that their support and mentoring of the younger

students means the future of our productions are in safe hands.

    Bravo to everyone involved.outstanding!

Life in the workhouse is a miserable place gruel morning, noon and night...

Oliver...did you just ask for more?

Work at the undertakers is not all its cracked up to be...

Dodger by name...Dodger by nature Olivers new family leave a lot to be desired!

    The story...

    ...no spoilers!

Bumble wants to make a quick profit

Oliver goes on the run, heading for London...and hopes of finding a new family

Whos in need of a boy? The Sowerberrys!

Can Fagins gang fill a void in Olivers life?

Will any good come out of Bill and Nancys love...or are they doomed?

    Will Bumble and

    Corney get their

    just desserts?

Were not going to give away the

ending...theres still a show left to

    go!

If you have seen the show already or have a ticket, youll know they were the hottest tickets in town. Look out next week for the

    official review.

    Will good triumph over evil?

Will Mr Brownlow save the day?

Rotary Club Cooking Competition Well done to our culinary competitors, Maxim Dale (11JLF), Holly Ramsey (11JLI) and Charlotte Whittaker Pitts (11JLI) who took part in the local heat of the national cooking competition at Craven College.

The judges commented on the enthusiasm of the competitors who displayed excellent skills and levels of presentation. A special mention goes to Charlotte Whitaker Pitts who came a close second with her chicken stuffed with feta and spinach wrapped in prosciutto served with steamed asparagus, fondant sweet potato and basil sauce. For dessert she served an exquisite milk chocolate and strawberry fraisier.

    Well done to all.

    Charlotte Whittaker-Pitts (11JI)

Congratulations to Niamh Maroney (11HGW) who entered the Colne Luther Greenwood Memorial Music Festival on Saturday 28th November in a number of singing classes. Niamh competed in four classes in the age group 15 to 18 years.

Class M23 Junior Solo up to and including age 16: Niamh sang Caro Mio Ben (Giordani), finishing a very good second in a high standard class. Class M28 Junior British Composer up to and including age 18: Singing Five Eyes Niamh came a close second to an excellent winner from Lothersdale. Class M26 Junior Folk Song up to and including age 18: Niamhs strongest class, having won in the Skipton Festival 4 years running, she performed I Must and I Will, a humorous folk song about a lady trying to find love with no luck. Niamh finished second for a third time in the day. It was very close one to call for the adjudicator. Class M30 Junior Songs from the Shows/Musical/Film: Niamh performed The Sweetest Sounds from Cinderella (Rodgers and Hammerstein) and came third.

It was a long day of performing at a high standard competition and Niamh was delighted to receive Distinction grades in her first three classes ...not a bad for a days work!

Governor Update We are pleased to announce the following new members to the Governing Body at Ilkley Grammar School:

Community Governors Catherine Douglas: I have spent the last 20 years of my career working within healthcare and currently head up Business Development and Performance for a community care provider in Kirklees. An ex Ilkley Grammar School pupil I moved back to Ilkley in 2003. I have a keen interest in childhood development and the broader development of skills and experience to enable career opportunities for young people. I have a 9 year old daughter and my main interests are Swimming and Ballroom Dancing.

Hilary Templar: I grew up in Ilkley and attended IGS where I made many of the friends I am still close to today. After studying physiology at the University of Aberdeen, I joined IBM as a software developer. Initially, I lived and worked in Warwick until a change in role allowed me to return to living in Ilkley. Most recently, I worked in Strategic Outsourcing Commercial Management and then Internal Audit as a business process auditor. While working at IBM, I was given a sabbatical year during which I trained and worked as a neighbourhood mediator with Bradfords Community Accord. Ive now been lucky enough to be able to take early retirement and am enjoying long walks, time for more skiing and travel, and the opportunity to get more involved with my local community.

Parent Governors Nick Cole: I moved to Addingham from London 15 years ago. My wife, Lisette and I have two daughters; the eldest of whom is in Year 8. Originally from Worcester I attended the Royal Grammar School and then the University of Bristol where I read English Literature. I work in Leeds as a consultant advising local authorities on the recruitment and development of their senior management teams. My experience includes work in both education authorities and childrens social care. I have served as an LEA appointed Community Governor at a Bradford primary and chaired the Governing Body through a federation with a neighbouring school. I have also been a Parish Councillor in Addingham.

Steve Spoerry: I moved with my family to Ilkley in 2010. I have a daughter at IGS and a son at Ben Rhydding Primary School. For 28 years I worked as a manager for the NHS latterly as Chief Executive of a Primary Care Trust and a General Hospital. Today I work as a self-employed interim director and consultant in the health and construction sectors. I am keen for the school to help all students make the most of their different aptitudes and aspirations.

Staff Governors Amy Bleasdale: Prior to joining IGS as the Curriculum Administrator, I spent 8 years as the School Information Manager at the North West SILC (North West Leeds Special Schools), where I was also a staff governor. I have experience of working within a wide range of educational areas including SEN, funding, data management and family support. I hold a BA (Hons) in Politics & Contemporary History, and previously worked as an events and wedding co-ordinator. Being a staff Governor is a great opportunity to get involved and my aim is to promote IGS visions and values through efficient and effective working practices, as well as being a positive voice for Associate Staff members. I currently live in Otley with my husband and 2 year old daughter so most of my 'spare' time is spent running around after them!

Neil Garrido: I undertook my PGCE teacher training at King's College London before taking my first qualified teaching post, which I held for three years, at a non-selective comprehensive school in Bromley, south east London. At this school I became the lead teacher of chemistry and in my final year at the school the KS4 science coordinator. Relocating to Yorkshire with my wife and two young children to begin my role as chemistry teacher at IGS in 2014 I now live locally and have an active interest in the outdoors. This currently includes cycling, fell running and climbing. Outside of school my interest in the outdoors has led me to compete in several mountain marathons and enter an ultra-marathon. My other, slightly eccentric, past-time is competing in village shows I was this year's winner of the Askwith show chocolate cake category (men only) and gained third place with my home-grown carrots at the Burley Summer festival! Since my relocation last year I feel that I am now firmly established within IGS and its community and believe it is the right time for me to make a greater contribution to the school through this post. Having experience of both teaching and supporting roles will, I believe, enable me to be more effective as a governor. Whilst the demands of both roles are similar they are nonetheless different and as such I hope to be able to represent and support my colleagues and the school more effectively as a result.
