NEWSLETTER APRIL 2015 POCOCK CONFIRMED TO HEADLINE BEER FESTIVAL! Surrey CCC President Pat Pocock has been confirmed as the headline act for the famous Surrey CCC Beer Festival – and will be singing in the Pavilion forecourt shortly after play on Saturday June 27th. Pocock, one of the finest off spinners in Surrey history, is also an excellent ‘Rat Pack’ singer and has serenaded fans and players alike at club events for many years. The last time Pocock got on the microphone at a public Surrey event was at a post season dinner to celebrate victory in the 2011 Clydesdale Bank 40 competition – so his appearance on the 27th will mark his glorious return after a four year absence from the Kia Oval microphone! The gig will be the headline act of what has become an eagerly anticipated event in the club calendar, the Surrey CCC Beer Festival – which will once again take over the Pavilion Forecourt for the duration of the four day match against Gloucestershire. Throughout the game, there will be beers and ciders available from across London, Surrey and further afield with Members and fans alike able to buy beers and take them into stands or relax in the festival area. NEWSLETTER MAY - JUNE 2015 During the festival, the ground will stay open until 9pm each night, with beer being served from the festival tent until 8.30pm. The ground’s usual policy of free entrance for all from tea will still apply on all four days. Although less divisive and controversial, Pocock is effectively the club’s equivalent of Kanye West – who is headlining the Glastonbury Festival on the same night! When pressed for a quote about his big gig, all the President could be tempted into saying was simply: “I’ve emptied bigger places than the Kia Oval!” Percy’s return to the Oval stage is sure to a big night – make sure you can say ‘you were there’ on Saturday June 27th. The Surrey Academy and U17 sides have enjoyed a strong start to the season – with Bradley Erasmus and Luke Bedford both scoring tons at the start of the ECB County Cup. Following a successful pre-season tour of Sri Lanka and a rained off game against Kent, Surrey Academy beat Berkshire by 55 runs at Kidmore End. Surrey batted first and were kept to 180 all out with Alex Shoff (44) leading the way for the batsmen. However, an excellent haul of 4/36 from young spinner Chris Jones helped Surrey dismissed their hosts for only 125. Further wickets fell to Dan Douthwaite, Will Pereira and Tom Homes in a solid start to the summer. U17 competition started in May half term week with Surrey playing Kent at the Polo Farm in Canterbury and setting 250/7 for their hosts to chase thanks to 114* from Bradley Erasmus, who has also been playing Second XI cricket this summer. Kent could only muster 223 all out in their chase, with seamer Sam Curran (younger brother of Tom) taking 5/41 from 9.5 overs as Surrey won by 27 runs. They continued on the road the following day, travelling to Blackstone to play Sussex, where Surrey again batted first – this time totalling 289/8 thanks to 107 from Lewis Bedford and a further 56 from Erasmus. The Sussex chase never looked likely to catch fire and eventually fizzled out at 183 all out with 3/17 from Amar Verdi and 3/42 to Angus Dahl as Surrey won by 106 runs. The U17s will next be in action on Sunday June 7th against Middlesex U17s at Reed’s School in Cobham. ERASMUS AND BEDFORD IMPRESS IN GOOD START FOR U17S

GRAHAM FORD - A BUSY AND DRAMATIC PERIOD

It certainly has been a busy first six weeks to the season with plenty of excitement and drama and pleasingly, the Surrey lads have played some impressive cricket and have provided some high class entertainment! Those who attended the Leicester match were certainly treated to four full days of amazing cricket. The Pietersen innings has to be one of the best Championship batting performances ever. Those there saw an absolute genius at work showing that he is at the peak of his powers. It is really sad that this great entertainer is lost to the international game. His show was remarkable but it was followed by the spectacular fourth innings run chase. Those who left early thinking the only possible result was a draw, certainly missed out on a very special show. 218 in just 22 overs! Unfortunately the poor weather destroyed the Essex and Northants Championship matches but the boys did all that was possible against Northants, gaining a full bag of bonus points. Jason Roy put together a classy career best 140 and the master Sanga scored another impressive hundred. As I write this the lads have just completed a really competitive four day battle with Kent. On a number of occasions Kent seemed to be well placed to take control, but once again we showed great character and a fighting spirit, bouncing back several times and finally getting home by three wickets. It was a real team effort, with every player making a valuable contribution. Jason Roy’s knock of 60* on a tough fourth day pitch deserves special mention as he continues to show that he is someone the England selectors need to keep a close eye on for all formats of the game. We have an extremely busy six weeks ahead and hopefully the lads will continue to play high quality and entertaining cricket. Their mental and physical strength will be tested but with the attitude and team

The Surrey Second XI have started the season playing some competitive cricket against sides including Hampshire, Kent, MCC and Warwickshire.

After a season opening friendly victory at the Ageas Bowl against a combined Hampshire and Kent side in which Aneesh Kapil (112) and Arun Harinath (94 and 77) combined well to record a fought three wicket win, Surrey got their Second XI Championship off to a good start with a dominant 211 run win over the MCC Young Cricketers.

The first day of the match was dominated by a 267 run partnership between Harinath (146) and Dom Sibley (152*) as Surrey declared on 358/1 before rain decimated the second day. The two sides then got their heads together with MCC declaring on 12/1 and Surrey forfeiting their second innings to leave the opposition 347 to win on the final day.

What could have been a competitive chase did not materialise as Stuart Meaker (4/26) led a good Surrey bowling performance as the MCC quickly fell to 135 all out.

Surrey then visited Kent and came out on the wrong side of their first outing in the Second XI T20, losing by nine wickets in Maidstone before the second game was lost to an unseasonal hail storm!

A fixture in the Second XI Championship followed over the next three days with Surrey being dismissed for 189 in their first innings before conceding 360 (including 160 from Ben Harmison) .

Sunbury CC triallist Chris Green (72*) led a second innings effort of 222 but Kent easily knocked off their 52 run target for the loss of just one wicket.

Surrey also recently beat the Club Cricket Conference by 90 runs at Reigate Priory CC with 79 for Ben Foakes, 80 for Vikram Solanki and 5/15 from spinner Freddie van den Bergh.

togetherness displayed recently I am sure they will cope very well through this crucial phase of the season. The busy program in County Cricket is testing for all teams and the good crowd support our lads enjoy certainly helps them dig deep and fight hard through the crucial tough sessions. And we thank you all for that! Graham Ford - Head Coach

NEWSLETTER APRIL 2015

With the 2015 General Election now in the books, we can announce that Surrey CCC Members have voted for Ringwood Boondoogle as this season’s Members’ Ale.

Boondoggle, which was up for the vote during the Surrey vs. Essex LV= County Championship match at the Kia Oval, received over 50% more votes than its three competitors, Ringwood Best, Jennings and Brakspear.

The four beers – which were all presented anonymously – were available for all Members to try, free of charge, in The Feathers, the Kia Oval’s new pub, throughout the game.

Described by its brewers as ‘a deliciously fruity ale affectionately crafted to savour and satisfy’, Boondoggle will now be sold in Members’ bars at the Kia Oval throughout the summer – alongside a wide selection of lagers and ales.

The ground will also continue to serve a selection of guest ales from the hugely popular new ‘Cask Ale’ bar in the Pavilion Forecourt, which served a well received selection of ales from the local Surrey Hills brewery during the first game of the summer.

A number of new products have been launched within the ever popular ‘1845 Range’ at the Surrey CCC shop.

Proving particularly popular are the new Feathers Cufflinks and Feathers Lapel Pin Badge, which are both newly available for £15 each.

Both products – and a wide variety of other items from the 1845 Range – are available in the Kia Oval shop, open on match days in the Pavilion Forecourt, and the club website at shop.kiaoval.com.

As well as the 1845 Range, you can also purchase Surrey replica shirts for both the LV= County Championship, NatWest T20 Blast and Royal London One Day Cup as well as a wide variety of training kit and other club merchandise – including, for the first time ever this year, an official Surrey rugby ball!

There are still 20 places remaining at the first Members’ Forum of 2015 – held in the John Major Room of the OCS Stand on Monday morning (June 1st) at 9.30am.

Entrance is free of charge and the morning will give Members the chance to question Director of Cricket Alec Stewart and Chief Executive Richard Gould – as well as benefit from a delicious free breakfast ahead of the second day of Surrey’s LV= County Championship match with Lancashire!

Whilst entrance is free of charge, Members are asked to register beforehand. To secure one of the remaining places, please either visit the Pavilion Reception, Hobbs Gate Ticket Office or the club website, kiaoval.com.

Those that have booked for Glamorgan in mid June, have a great time!

Surrey CCC have capped female cricketers Cecily Scutt, Natalie Sciver, Katherine Robson and Sarah Clarke – making them the first four women to be formally capped by the club.

The honours were handed out at the Kia Oval on Monday June 18th by Chief Executive Richard Gould, Director of Women’s Cricket Ebony Rainford-Brent and Damian Greenish, Chairman of the Surrey Women’s sponsor Pemberton Greenish before Surrey took to the field in the first ever Pemberton Greenish London Cup.

Scutt is the Surrey captain and has been at the club since the U9s. She made her senior debut for the club in 2009 and has played in 44 Championship games.

Natalie Sciver, who is also centrally contracted to England, has played for Surrey 35 times since making her debut in the summer of 2010.

Leg spinner Sarah Clarke, who first played for Surrey in 1997, has played in 102 senior fixtures and also represented England, touring India in national colours.

Katherine Robson, who also works for the club at the Surrey Cricket Centre at George Abbott School in Guildford, first played for Surrey in 2004 and has gone onto make 53 appearances.

All four players played in the subsequent match, the first ever Pemberton Greenish London Cup, which – despite Surrey’s 25 run defeat – was a great occasion and set a modern day record for attendance at a domestic women’s match.

The Surrey Women have suffered an up and down start to the summer, winning their first two games but then suffering three straight defeats.

Their season started on the first Bank Holiday weekend in May with excellent victories over Sussex and Berkshire, which left them top of the table in the Royal London One Day Cup First Division, the top domestic competition for female cricketers, in which all matches are played under standard 50 over cricket conditions.

Victory over Sussex came via a match winning partnership between wicket keeper Kirstie White and England all rounder Natalie Sciver, both of whom made 67 as Surrey knocked off the runs required with just under 25 overs left.

Surrey travelled to Maidenhead the following day where they set Berkshire 217 to win, this time building an innings behind 81* from New Zealand overseas signing Rachel Candy.

With England’s Heather Knight (65), Corinne Hall (54)

and Emily Gerke (57) all making big contributions, Berkshire were cruising to victory at 201/7 but three late wickets saw Surrey sneak a two run win.

Despite the inaugural Pemberton Greenish London Cup at the Kia Oval being a huge success as an event, with a crowd of 750 breaking modern day records for domestic women’s cricket attendance, Surrey had to watch their London rivals lift the trophy after they won a slow burning T20 game by 25 runs.

The second Bank Holiday weekend saw two more home games in Cobham – against Middlesex and Warwickshire – and Surrey suffering two incredibly tight defeats.

Cecily Scutt’s side lost to Middlesex by four runs and Warwickshire by five runs, to leave them with two wins and two defeats in the league.

They are next in action on Sunday June 14th when they play T20 matches at Horsley and Send CC against Yorkshire and Sussex. Entrance is free of charge.
