I would like to thank allthe members and guests thatattended the November meeting.Kevin McCray treated us to agreat talk. His topic was his newbook "A ShoutJllJI of Orders: AHlmJty 0 the 9r O.VJ. Kevin istaking orders for his book now soif any of you would like topurchase a copy let me know.
As you know we DONOT have a meeting in Decem-ber so our next meeting will beJanuary of 2004. Our speaker forthe meeting will be ClarkeWilhelm and he will give us a talkon Winfield Soott Hancock.
As I mentioned at theNovember meeting our spring tripwill be to Sh~oh, TN. Our plansare still tentative at this time butwe plan on meeting ea'!Y (7:00a.m.) on Friday April 23 at theCracker Barrel in Grove City (1-71& Stringtown Rd). We will travelto Shiloh in a 15-passenger vanunless we have more peoplewanting to go. In that case wewill need a bigger vehicle. Theplan is to travel to Shiloh with ashort stop over at Fort Donelson.We will be arriving in Corinth, MSFriday night and will stay at theHoliday 1M Express, which willact as our headquarters for theweekend. day will be spent at Shitoh. OnSunday we will spend the entireday at Shiloh. We depart forhome Monday morning anivingback at the Cracker Barrel inGrove City Monday evening(~). The cost of the trip will be$300-$325 per person. Thisincludes a continental breakfasteach morning, brown bag lunchSaturday and Sunday. DinnerFriday, Saturday and Sunday.Hotel room, Guide and transpor-tation. A deposit of $150 perperson (cash or check) is due toreserve your spot no later thanthe February meeting and thespace is limited to the first 13people. The balance of $150(cash only) is to be paid no laterthan the April meeting. Makeyour reservations early becausethis is first oome first served.

Mr. McCray says hebecame interested in the Civil Warwhen he was 7 years old and read
"The American Heritage PictureHistory of the Civil War.. He alsorecalls a story his grandmothertold of her grandfather being aSharpshooter during the war andpart of the Honor Guard for theLincoln funeral: The family laterIeamed that in August 1862 hewas in Camp Uma and was thensent to Kentucky where hecontraded dysentery and thenspent the rest of the war inIndianapolis.
The title of Mr. McCray'sbook "A Shouting of 0nIers: A.Hi5toty of the 9t1" OhioVolunteer Infantry Reglmenfcomes from a statement made bythe regimental Chaplain. Thebook is based on the diaries andletters of Lieutenant Colonel JohnCumins, Captain Thomas Honnelland Private Jacob Earty. Mr.McCray considered the writing ofthe book as a 10-y:ear hobby.
The 99'" O. V.1. wasformed in Lima and was sent toCincinnati to defend it against anexpected attack by Braxton Bragg.They 'Hollid then be sent toLexington, KY to guard thebridges around the city.
The first Colonel of theregiment was Albert Langworthy.The regiment would fi!jrt atStones River, Snow Hill, andChickamauga. They helped tocapture Williams Island, whichwas an amphibious operation.They were involved in the fighting

Camp ClevelandHistorical Marker
On October 11 there wasan historical marker placed at thelocation of Camp Cleveland,which is now a small park ~University Road and West 10Street in Cleveland. The Site isin the Tremont neighborhood,which was originally known asOhio City.
More than 15,200 soldierstrained at the 35-acre camp from1862-1865. It had barracks for32 men each, an arsenal andguardhouse. When the troopsleft to join the war they marchedto Union Depot.
Some of the Campsrecruits were called on ~odisperse a draft protest in PublicSquare and others would be sentto Johnson's Island in 1863when rumors spread that Con-federate sympathizers werecoming from Canada.

Buffington Island Update
The Ohio Historical
Society in partnership with theBuffington Island BattlefieldGroup has been awarded a grantfor $52 000 to purchasepreservati~n easements on criti-cal areas of the battlefield site.
The grant from theCenter for Civil War LivingHistory will be used to buy fromwilling property owners preserva-tion easements that will preventthe sale of mineral rights, limitdevelopment, protect archeolog-ical resources and preventfurther loss of the battlefield.
The Civil WarPreservation Trust and theAmerican Battlefield ProtectionProgram of the National. ParkServiCe are also partners In theBuffington Island preservationeffort.
