    A: Introduction: History

    William & Catherine Booth begin their

    careers in 1852 in England with the goal

    ofleading the lost to Christ

    (Murdoch 1994).

    The Booths took their message to the

    streets focusing on poor, homeless and

    other less fortunate individuals

    (Salvation Army 2012).

    In 1865 holds a series of meetings in

    east London in a grave yard. He gained a

    large following converting criminals,

    prostitutes, alcoholics and gamblers (Murdoch 1994).

    Other churches did not accept Booths converts because of their

    pasts. The converts took to the streets preaching and singing.

    History : The Christian Mission as it was called then saw its numbers grow

    from 10 workers in 1867 to more than a 1000 volunteers and 42

    evangelists by 1874 (Salvation Army 2012). Booth took the role of general superintendent followers called

    him General.

    Known as the Hallelujah Army converts spread the word of God

    from East London to other cities (Murdoch 1994).

    1878 Booth Changes the name of the organization to the Salvation

    Army (Winston 1999).

    Group faced violence , persecution and resistance in some areas.

    Expanded to British Isle responsible for over 250,000 converts

    from 1881- 1885 (Salvation Army 2012).

    Movement Gain hold in the United States.

    An international movement saw it expand into over parts of the

    world (Winston 1999).

    History in the United States Salvation Army expands to the U.S. when

    in 1879 when lieutenant Eliza Shirley

    holds a series of meeting of the

    organization in Philadelphia

    (Winston 1999).

    Group received positively in the U.S.

    (Winston 1999).resulting in Shirley to request more help

    from Booth (Murdoch 1994).

    Salvation Army saw its reach expand into

    12 states and become endorsed byPresident Grover Cleveland in 1886

    (Winston 1999).

    Today Salvation army has a presence in all

    50 states and U.S. Territories (Salvation Army 2012).

    SALVATION ARMY: A Non Profit the salvation army supports itself and the services its

    provides through donations that that it receives.

    Donation of gently used goods that are thenresold at Salvation Army Thrift Stores.

    Fund raising campaign include the Christmas

    Charity (Red Kettle Campaign).

    Over 3 million volunteers give of their time and

    talents to serve the Salvation Army helping to

    keep costs down.

    Monetary donation s throughout the year help

    to support programs including donation from estates and wills.

    Most noteworthy Mrs. Kroc willed 1.5 billion to salvation armythat grew to 1.8 billion and is instrumental in funding for Kroc

    Centers and youth activities.

    Services Offered:

    Housing and Homeless Services: group homes, emergency shelters ,

    transitional living (Salvation Army 2012).

    Family Service Programs: emergency food , housing, utility

    assistance (Salvation Army 2012).

    SAWSO 4 components : 1) HIV/Aids & Community Health Services,2) Microfinance, 3) Anti-Human Trafficking, 4) Disaster Relief.

    KROC Centers- for children and families to have recreational,

    educational and cultural activities (Salvation Army 2012).

    Youth Camps - summer camp programs provides activities for low

    income youth and their families (Salvation Army 2012).

    Adult Rehabilitation Centers (ARC) 119 centers in the U.S.

    programs funded through donations (Salvation Army 2012).

    Christmas Charity (RED KETTLE ) provides for needs of less

    fortunate during Christmas. Distributes food, clothing, toys and

    helps families to meet basic needs (Salvation Army 2012).

    Elderly Services- hot meals, education, recreation services

    (Salvation Army 2012).

    Philosophy : Mission Statement

    Core Values: Run under 11 articles of faith.

    All Salvation Army social welfare services are provided on a non-discriminatory basis; such services shall be equally available to all

    persons on the basis of need and capacity to benefit from the

    service (Salvation Army 2012).

    In 2011 more than 30 million American were served by the

    Salvation Army.

    C. Capacity Building

    In order to build capacity the Salvation Army must first identify the

    needs of their organization and the community in which their

    located. They must also develop interdependence with institutions

    and their communities. Their focus should be on identifying the

    most efficient ways to address these needs. They need to develop

    strategies and provide education that will assist their people in

    implementing programs that produce the best outcomes.

    There own training school that provides their employees withan associate degree in ministry and/or business.

    Encourage volunteerism from the people in the community
