HAZELWOOD HIGHLIGHTS NOVEMBER 2018 Fall Greetings Hazelwood Families! October was a tremendous month of learning and growth. Parents and teachers met for conferences. Our PTA conducted a successful cookie dough fundraiser and a fun costume party. They also hosted and put on a theater camp with around 50 students. Our P.E. teacher, Mr. Scott Boyce and paraeducator, Ms. Mona McDonald began our before school fitness class, “Move 60.” In addition, Mr. Boyce and 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Bromley coached a Hazelwood Cross Country team! Students really began to dig into their studies. Teachers taught amazing, engaging lessons, which both encouraged and challenged our students. Hazelwood is an amazing environment for learning in academics as well as in the social and emotional realms. November is a time to express our gratitude. At Hazelwood, we have so many reasons to be grateful - too many to list! I am grateful for our 65 compassionate, hard-working, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and skilled staff. We have amazing teachers and “certificated” faculty members. We have amazing paraeducators and “classified” staff. We have 466 hard-working, creative, caring, and smart students. Our 360 families, parent community and school district are very supportive! We have 290 people volunteering in our school. That’s amazing! To thank our Veterans we will have a special assembly on Thursday, Nov. 8th. Of course, our country is celebrating Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 22nd (No School November 21-23). Thank you for all you do to support us in educating your children! Dr. Tim Parnell (Principal) & Mrs. Norma Lee (Assistant Principal) 1

SAFETY & EMERGENCIES at Hazelwood Student safety is one of our top priorities. Whether it's in the classroom or playground we work diligently to insure that our students are safe. One of the ways that we accomplish this goal is by holding monthly safety drills to prepare staff and students for different safety situations that may occur during school hours. That’s what we do at school, but there are things that you can do at home to prepare students for emergency situations. Below are a few suggestions to get things going.

1. Teach student how to dial emergency numbers and what info to communicate. 2. Explain how to evacuate the home and develop reunification plan. 3. Show students where the fire extinguisher is located and how to use it. 4. Earthquake: Drop, where to find Cover (Away from falling objects), and Hold on.

The most important step is to talk about emergency preparations with your family so that everyone knows what to do. Discussing ahead of time helps reduce fear, particularly for younger children. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Shaw.

Staff & Volunteer Spotlight  You may have noticed a smiling man in a reflective vest; greeting students in the morning at the front of our school. His name is Mr. Brian Smith. He is a volunteer and the grandfather to a first grader. He does this for fun and as a way of giving back and serving. We are fortunate to have volunteers like Mr. Smith. If you’re interested in helping out, please visit the school office and complete the paperwork. Hazelwood would love your help. THANK YOU

Mr. Smith!   Mrs. Julie Baird is our primary intensive support program teacher. While this is her first year at Hazelwood, she is an experienced special education teacher. The last several years she taught at Mountlake Terrace Elementary School. She graduated from Washington State University; earned a Master’s degree in Music from Oklahoma City University and another Master’s degree (Special Education) from the University of Missouri (Kansas City). She has a kindergarten daughter attending Hazelwood. She loves reading detective novels, lasagne, Hawaii, the colors blue and green, and most of all, helping children learn and grow. Prior to teaching she was an actress and singer!

Again, it's important that we have your current address on file, so please contact our office soon! Update your phone numbers! If your phone number has changed, or you have updates to your emergency contact information, please contact our office. It's important we have your most recent information on file should we need to contact you or another adult should your child need to be picked up from school.

Hazelwood is in the Money!!! THANK YOU to all who participated and/or donated to the Foundation for the Edmonds School District 5K Monster Mash Run/Walk. As Hazelwood had 36 participants/donors, we will earn back a dividend for our school. This extra funding is always put to great use to continue making Hazelwood a safe, caring, community of learners! Muchas Gracias!!!

Edmonds School District Support  Our school district has provided our teachers with two technology/ instructional coaches to help us improve upon our teaching. These coaches work in five different schools.   Mr. James Bettis is Hazelwood’s technology instructional Coach. This is his second year in this position, but he’s new to Hazelwood. He works in 5 different elementary schools across the district partnering with teachers to integrate technology into instruction across all subject areas. Previously, he taught in a bilingual program in Northshore School District for 8 years. During that time he taught 4th, 5th and 6th grades. He has 4 year old twins, so much of what he does at home involves them. He enjoys riding his bike with and sometimes without his kids. He also enjoys hiking, snowboarding, playing soccer and other outdoor activities. He likes to travel and feels fortunate to have seen much of Central America while traveling and volunteering during 2012-2013 when he lived in Honduras. He’s excited to be a member of the community at Hazelwood and looks forward to working with teachers, students and families.   Mrs. Anna Belkin Stuart is Hazelwood’s instructional coach. Her role involves partnering with teachers to improve their instruction so we can all improve student learning! This is her fifth year of coaching, and her third year coaching at Hazelwood. Prior to this, she was a kindergarten and then first grade teacher. She loves that this

job allows her to spend time with children of all ages and work together with teachers to find the most effective and innovative ways of helping students learn! At home, she enjoys spending time meal planning and cooking, exploring our parks, beaches, and forests, and together with her husband navigating parenthood of a 10-year-old and 1-year-old.

Hazelwood Attendance Line (425) 431-2601

Reproductive Health and Disease Prevention Parent Review Night Two parent review nights are scheduled for families to learn about the Reproductive Health and Disease Prevention Curriculum that is taught Edmonds School District starting in grade 5. Families interested in previewing the secondary curriculum (grades 7-12) can plan to come on Thursday, November 15; elementary families (grades 5-6) can plan to attend on Thursday, January 17. Grades: 7-12 Date: Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018 Location: Boardrooms – Educational Services Center, 20420 68th Ave. W. Lynnwood Time: 4-7 p.m. – Parents are welcome to drop in anytime between 4-7 p.m. Grades: 5-6 Date: Thursday, January 17, 2019 Location: Rooms 101 and 102 – Educational Services Center, 20420 68th Ave. W. Lynnwood Time: 4-7 p.m. – Parents are welcome to drop in anytime between 4-7 p.m. There will be health teachers, classroom teachers, and a school nurse present to help answer questions about sexual reproduction lessons, HIV/AIDS lessons, and puberty lessons which are all a part of the FLASH & KNOW curriculum.  FREE PARENTING TIP: When your child comes home after school it is natural to ask, “How was school?” The majority of students will answer that question with a one word answer (e.g. “Fine,” Good,” “Terrible,” etc.) Instead of asking a question that can be answered in one word, try to ask a more open ended question to help them better reflect upon their learning experiences. Here are some examples:

1. What did you eat for lunch? 2. Did you catch anyone doing something funny? 3. What games did you play at recess? 4. Did anyone do anything super nice for you? 5. What was the nicest thing you did for someone else? 6. Who made you smile today? 7. What new fact did you learn today? 8. What challenged you today? 9. What would you rate your day on a scale of 1 to 10? Why? 10. If one of your classmates could be the teacher for the day who would you

want it to be? Why?
