September 2018 Hayshire United Church of Christ
Outdoor Worship & Picnic -- September 9th at 10:30
“Bountiful Harvest”
“When you harvest your land, don’t harvest right up to the edges of your field or the gleanings (leftovers) from the harvest. Don’t strip your vineyard bare or go back and pick up the fallen
grapes. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am God, your God.”
Leviticus 19:9-10
As always, we will celebrate the end of summer and the impending arrival of fall with our yearly
Outdoor Worship Service & Picnic. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board. Invite some
friends, bring a dish to share, and join in the bountiful feast that is typical for Hayshire as we gather
in fellowship!
September is Hunger Action Month. We will use our service September 9th as an opportunity to
support this movement. Please bring non-perishable item(s) to support our community and those
served by the Northeastern Food Bank. We fill our grocery cart with donations each month. Let’s fill
it on this one day and help our neighbors in need! Eating was very important in the Bible. In the
Hebrew Canon (Old Testament) there were tons of rules about
what people could and couldn’t eat, how food was supposed to be
prepared and cared for. In the New Testament, Jesus loved to
eat. It seems like every time he hit town there was mention of him
eating with someone – especially the poor, the hungry, the
outcasts.
Food is one thing that brings people together and we love
gathering to share a meal here at Hayshire! Food is an essential,
basic need in order for humanity to survive. What better way to
show our love for others than through sharing the Bountiful
Harvest we have received from God. Hope to see you on
September 9th!

Pastoral Reflections
“You tend the land and water it, and the earth produces its abundance. You crown each year with your bounty, and our storehouses overflow with your goodness. The mountain meadows are covered with flocks, and the valleys are filled with corn; your people celebrate your boundless grace, they shout for joy and sing” (Psalm 65 paraphrase).
Summer is my favorite time of year. The
warm, lazy days, tons of sunshine (well,
usually), and fresh produce from April –
September. I love watching the changes of the
days from the crisp spring yellowy-greens, to the
lushness that mid-summer brings to everything.
One of my favorite memories, as a kid, was
visiting the many farm stands in my home town
and helping to pick out the fresh produce for our
meals. We didn’t have room for our own garden,
so we supported our neighboring farmers by
buying from them. Today, I still try to get my
produce from the local farm stands during the
summer months. It always tastes so much
better when you know who grew it and how it
was grown. Next best thing to your own garden!
Here we are again on the downhill side of
summer – quickly sliding into the fullness of fall
once more. Our gardens are starting to
transition into dormancy as they prepare for the
colder months ahead. Many of you are canning
and freezing some of that delicious fresh
produce to carry you through the winter
months.
We are planning to kick off our fall with and
end-of-Summer, “Bountiful Harvest” worship
and a luncheon on September 9th – hopefully in
our beautiful side yard, if Mother Nature
cooperates. I know that many of the dishes we
share will reflect the wonderful flavors of the
summer harvest.
Not everyone is as lucky as we are to be able
to experience the “Bounty” of God’s harvest.
Here at Hayshire, we go out of our way to help
make sure that all those who wish to join us at
the table always feel welcome and are fed with
abundance.
For years Hayshire has been committed to
helping fight hunger in our community by
providing hot meals through Helping Hands and
our monthly collections for the Northeastern
Food Bank. For September 9th, we are going to
fill the Northeastern FB cart in one service! So,
please bring at least one non-perishable food
item with you to worship. Help us fill a belly
and put a smile on a neighbors face once again.
Come to the table. Join in the Bountiful
Feast of God.
Blessings, Pastor Brenda
Northeastern Food Pantry
An article about Feeding America was
published in June, 2018. It was called “Feeding
America: By the Numbers”. They explained, “5.4
million senior citizens currently face food
insecurity in America. Lack of transportation,
functional limitations, and health problems are
major factors. 1.5 million Veterans receive food
stamps. 27% of households with incomes above
the federal poverty level are food insecure, and
13 million American children face hunger—
that’s 1 in 6 kids.
One way to help is to donate food and
personal care items. Our needs this month are:
mixed vegetables, red beets, lima beans, carrots,
sauerkraut and yams.
We feel honored and blessed that you are
helping us fight hunger. We want to make sure
everyone in our community has enough to eat.
Messy Church starts again September 21st

We will be taking pre-orders for the cookbook in

From your President---
As summer starts to close, we look forward to
cooler Fall temperatures, so does our church
season. On Sunday, September 9, we will hold
an Outdoor Worship Service, at 10:30 am. This
will be the beginning of our normal worship
time moving forward, at 10:30. The choir will be
presenting its first anthem of the church season.
Also, the new church season brings about
other opportunities for learning and
worship. Faith Time for our children will
resume in September. The adult Journey class
will begin a new season. And Messy Church
resumes later in September.
The new church season provides many
opportunities for us to renew our faith
exploration and learning. Hayshire will be filled
with excitement as the children go back to
school and so do we.
I encourage everyone to take part in the
many upcoming events as a means of fellowship
and learning. All are welcome at Hayshire!

Dinner and a Prayer Cookbook
The cookbook is almost ready! We
are down to making just a few more
changes. And then we are off to
printing one for viewing.
Keep your ears open during
announcements for updates and
watch for pre-order sheets in your
bulletins for when we are going to start taking
pre-orders.
Tell your friends, family and neighbors that
the cookbook will be available for purchase at
our annual bazaar on Saturday, October 27th.
We will have all pre-orders ready for pick up
starting October 28th after worship.
Reminder the cookbooks will make perfect
gifts for Christmas, weddings, housewarming,
etc.
This cookbook is also a great way to pass a
little of the Bible along the way.
“Eunice” by Eileen McNamara will be the
book for discussion at the September 13 meeting
of the Hayshire Book Club. Eunice Kennedy
Shriver was the sister of President John
Kennedy and the founder of Special Olympics.
The club will meet at Friendly’s on route 30 at
2:00. Please join us for a discussion and a sweet
treat!

Helping Hands
Our next scheduled Helping Hands for the
Homeless Food Run is Saturday October 6th. I
am unable to be at the church in the afternoon,
so will need a volunteer to take charge and
coordinate the prep and get all food, supplies,
and volunteers to the first site, where I will join
you. I can have all supplies purchased, set up,
and can take care of all clean up. Please let me
know ASAP if you are willing to assume this
responsibility so that I know if we will be able to
host the food run.
Volunteers are also needed to help prepare
the brown bag lunches at the church at 2PM,
and to help serve the meals on the street at
5:30PM (leaving the church at 5PM). A sign-up
sheet will be posted on the bulletin
board. Please sign-up if you can donate
supplies, monetary contributions, and
assistance with baking lasagnas and helping
with preparation and serving.
Thank you,
Wendy Parson

ONA News
Equality Week has recently passed and
Hayshire was involved in a number of the
events. A group of Hayshire folks participated in
the Equality Festival, along with the other York
UCC ONA churches. Although quite warm, we
enjoyed our time talking to attendees and the
other churches. It is through these conversations
that we can grow in our ONA journey as
individuals and as churches. There were also
several commitment ceremonies presided over by
our clergy, including Pastor Brenda.
Several Hayshire folks also attended a forum
held at Dover UCC (Eva’s church), with a panel
presentation on Sexuality and Spirituality. It was
a very enlightening event, with panel members
from a variety of faith and belief backgrounds. A
dinner was also included, so we were given the
opportunity to hold interesting conversations with
the panel members and members from other
churches.
The York Association ONA coalition will be
meeting again in September to continue
discussions on our next events. We look to
continue to offer opportunities to our church
members, to our churches and to other churches to
help grow in our ONA lives.

Friday, October 19th, 6-7:30PM
Martin Luther once wrote : “The Bible is alive, it speaks to me; it has feet, it runs after me; it has

It is in this spirit that we will be introducing a
pilot program of casual discussion around the
table (light dinner) with adults and older youth
(when available). There will be a selected theme ,
but who knows where the conversation will lead
us. In addition, our younger group will be
introduced to, “Table Talk for Messy Moments –
for all ages – A Game of Conversations.
