NICHD Mission The mission of the NICHD is to ensure

that every person is born healthy and wanted, that women suffer no harmful effects from reproductive processes, and that all children have the chance to achieve their full potential for healthy and productive lives, free from disease or disability, and to ensure the health, productivity, independence, and well-being of all people through optimal rehabilitation.

 

NICHD Organization

Two NICHD Branches of Interest

Child Development and Behavior Branch

The CDB Branch develops scientific initiatives and supports research and research training relevant to the psychological, psychobiological, language, behavioral, and educational development of children. The following theme characterizes all Branch programs: Development is best described and studied as a variable process in which individual differences in cognitive, social, affective, language, neurobiological maturation, environment and life experiences, and genetics interact in complex ways.

Demographics and Behavioral Sciences Branch

The mission of the DBS Branch is to improve the health and well-being of individuals, families, and populations by adding to knowledge about human population dynamics and their causes and consequences. The Branch funds demographic, behavioral, and social sciences research on fertility, families, population movement, morbidity and mortality, HIV/AIDS, and population composition. Research on population diversity and change, studies of the consequences of population diversity and change for health and well-being, and research on the interrelationships among individual, family, group, community, and population processes are all central to this mission.

Child and Family Processes/Maltreatment and Violence Program• Areas of focus within the Program include antecedents

and consequences of child abuse and neglect as well as psychosocial and psychobiological factors that shed light on the mechanisms by which child abuse and neglect result in harmful effects.

• In addition, the Program aims to identify factors that help children cope with abuse and neglect and to develop theory-driven prevention and intervention strategies that reduce the risk for maltreatment and ameliorate its effects on development.

• Also of interest are studies that examine children’s emotional responses and physiological reactivity to trauma and conflict as mediators and moderators in the associations between exposure to parental/marital conflict, child adjustment, moral development, and cognitive and behavioral problems.

Research Priorities….

• Basic and applied studies of cognition, language, reading, math and science learning, learning disabilities, with and without comorbid conditions, in various contexts (SES, language, culture, neighborhood, family…)

• Common measures, methods, samples, pooling data to answer larger questions

• Integrated neurobiological, quantitative and behavioral genetic, and cognitive behavioral data

Program Priorities• Studies that highlight the experiences children need from

birth to age eight to prepare them to learn, read, and succeed in school.

• Early interactions with adults and peers, the early childhood education teaching methods and curricula, and comprehensive early childhood interventions that support learning and development

• Studies that explore a variety of influences on atypical development in mathematics and science learning and cognition in both humans and animal models, including genetic and neurobiological substrates, and cognitive, linguistic, sociocultural, and instructional factors.

• Studies of the association between pet ownership/caregiving and physical and mental health, as well as the involvement of companion animals in both physical and psychological therapeutic treatments

Career Development Awards – K01

•NICHD only supports the K01 in three areas:

Purpose of the “K” Award

• Provides support and “protected time”

(3-5 years) for an intensive, supervised career development experience in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences leading to research independence

Eligibility Requirements

Candidates must:• have a research or a health-professional

doctorate or its equivalent,

• be committed to developing careers as independent investigators in child abuse and neglect research, and

• have demonstrated the capacity or potential for highly productive independent research in the period after the doctorate.

Military Families Initiative

•Research on Children in Military Families: The Impact of Parental Military Deployment and Reintegration on Child and Family Functioning •PA-11-200 (R01)

Military Families Initiative Goals

• R01: Studies on the impact of parental military deployment, combat-related stress, and reintegration with the family on child social and affective development outcomes as well as on family functioning.  Longitudinal prospective studies with diverse samples would address important gaps in the literature and are highly encouraged.  Descriptive studies addressing the particular concerns of early childhood, middle childhood and adolescence are also encouraged.

• R13: Interdisciplinary conferences and meetings to examine critical questions regarding the impact of parental military deployment, combat-related stress and reintegration with the family on child social and affective development outcomes as well as on family functioning.

• R21: Developmental and exploratory studies as well as intervention studies targeting the particular concerns of early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence are also encouraged, as are the development and testing of measures to assess family functioning and child development outcomes.

NICHD Research Short Courses (R25) PA-12-207• The R25 is used for support to develop and/or

implement a program as it relates to a category in one or more of the areas of education, information, training, technical assistance, coordination, or evaluation.

• The NICHD invites applications for grants to develop and conduct short-term research education programs to improve the knowledge and skills of a broad-based community of biomedical and behavioral researchers conducting research on reproductive, developmental, behavioral, social, and rehabilitative processes that determine the health and well-being of newborns, infants, children, adults, families, and populations. The program should include both didactic and hands-on experiences. If appropriate, the program may include activities to disseminate course materials and instructional experience to the scientific community. Programs focusing on uses of model organisms are encouraged
