Yet again we are at the end of an academic year - and what a year. There have been so many exciting opportunities for our pupils – travelling as far away as Swaziland and Iceland, visiting many universities including Oxford and Bristol, participating in numerous competitions and our pupils always being commended for their maturity and thoughtfulness.

This year we have maintained a focus on careers so that our pupils are aware of the vast range of opportunities that are available for them when they leave learning, and to increase their employability. There have been many personal achievements, with pupils participating in sport at the national level representing their country and also at regional level. These sports range from tumbling, trampolining, swimming and athletics to BMX. The list is endless but shows that there are many Barr Beacon pupils participating and achieving in sports at the highest levels.

The new build has started and it will certainly improve our current teaching spaces for maths and English. The design has the WOW factor and we hope to have it open for September 2017.

The tragedies around the world make us more aware of the responsibilities we have for our young people, and some unpleasant actions by a few have led us to review our security at school. From September, access during school hours will only be through an intercom system at the top gate which will be kept closed between 8.50am and 3pm. This will ensure that we safeguard our children and staff. We ask that you support us in this endeavour by making appointments before you arrive at school to ensure that colleagues are available to see you.

In September, we will be checking every child’s uniform including school shoes. If a pupil is dressed incorrectly, parents will be asked to bring their correct uniform into school. Pupils not following the school’s uniform rules will be taught away from the rest of the school. We know that you have chosen Barr Beacon for its high standards and we ask for your support in maintaining those high standards.

We await the exam results in August with great excitement, wondering which universities our Year 13s will attend. Results days are so very special and one of the best days at Barr Beacon.

Have a safe and enjoyable summer holidays. We will see you again in September.

Thank you for your continued support.

Presentation

We are very proud of our Year 10 pupils who were have been selected as Barr Beacon Prefects after a very rigorous application and interview process. They received their Prefect ties and badges in a formal presentation.

Our Prefects have received a wide variety of training sessions in order to prepare them for this most important role in school. Over the course of two highly intensive days, the pupils took part in a range of activities designed to challenge them and give them the opportunity to develop their leadership, teamwork and communication skills. The successful pupils have equipped themselves superbly throughout the training process and will make outstanding role models to the rest of the school.

The Prefect Team will be led by Senior Prefects: Sunil Mistry (10B1) and Skye Broad (10M1) who will be supported by Deputy Senior Prefects Mia-Rae Brown (10B1) and Jonathan Hunt (10W1).

PUPILS RACE PAST THOUSANDS OF TEAMS TO COMPETE IN WORLD FINAL OF JAGUAR MATHS COMPETITION.

On Wednesday 22nd June, Riya Mistry and Nina Howard travelled to the British Motor Museum in Gaydon to

compete against the other finalists. Just to get to the final had been a gruelling challenge: thousands of teams

from around the world, including those as far afield as Qatar, had entered the competition. Riya and Nina’s Team

Barr Beacon were one of only 16 teams to get to the final stage of the Senior Competition. To do so, they had to

prove they were the best mathematicians, applying their knowledge to a real-life scenario: how best to modify

a race car to get around a track. How would they tweak the car’s performance to navigate the various bends and

contend with unpredictable weather conditions?

It was tough, and although the girls had been preparing using the Maths In Motion software in school, the Final

required them to think on their feet.

Mathsin Motion

Riya said: “The rules are easy: get your maths right, make the correct decisions and you could win the race. Get

your maths wrong and you run the risk of crashing, blowing up the engine or not even making it to the starting

line. We were amazed we reached the final and, although we didn’t win, we made it to the end of the track, which

many other teams didn’t.”

Nina said: “We wanted to take part because we both love maths. It was great being at the Final. We’ve been made

to feel like legends.”

Prefect Training 2016Barr Beacons School’s newly-elected Prefects attended a training course at National Paintball Fields (NPF) Bassetts Pole, Birmingham, on Wednesday 8th June. The day involved a variety of activities such as inflatable action, archery, team building and bushcraft. All pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day and commented on how it enabled them to work more effectively as a team.

On the following day, they completed an intensive training day in school. They completed several sessions, looking at a variety of areas including the role of a Barr Beacon Prefect, supporting your Head of House, mediation and role play, E-safety and safeguarding. Every pupil showed us exactly why they had been selected to become a Barr Beacon Prefect and worked very well as a team throughout the two days. We are delighted to have such an outstanding team.

WALSALL DANCE FESTIVALThis term the dance department performed at the annual Walsall Dance Festival. The night was a celebration of dance performances from the local secondary schools. Our Year 9 dancers did an energetic Jazz number and our GCSE Year 10s performed a dramatic contemporary piece. All pupils did exceptionally well to perform to the large audience.

CREATIVE ARTS WEEKLaunched on Friday 17th June through an exclusive Year 7 showcase, and throughout the week until Friday 24th June, the Creative Arts team at Barr Beacon School presented a range of drama, dance and musical performances to its pupils, highlighting to them exactly how much talent we have in our school. The performances ranged from devised drama group pieces, choreographed ensemble work, dance solos, rock band performances, instrumental performances, vocal solos, monologues and so much more!

There were pieces across a range of genres which were performed with confidence and musicality by all. The Year 10 band, consisting of Nadia Tarajia (10B1), Euan Woodman (10B2), Kieran Hamilton (10W1), Lara Bridgett (8M1) & Sam Basnett (10M1) performed an excellent set of three songs on Monday to a packed and very appreciative audience. There was an excellent rendition of ‘No-one but you’ by Amy Beecroft (9C1) – upcoming star of next year’s musical: We Will Rock You. Several Year 9 musicians performed their own versions of a number of pop songs which they have worked hard on, both in and out of their music lessons.

The dance studio saw some exceptional talent and a wide range of styles. Leanne Garcia (8W2), Megan Cudderford (9W1) and Naomi Fitsimmons (8M1) stole the show with their fierce street dances whilst the audience was also very complimentary of the brave lyrical solos from Claire Pincher (7M1) and Jade Mahil (10M1). Each breaktime allowed more talent to be shared and it was brilliant to see so many of our pupils coming to support their peers and enjoy a performance.

In drama, comedies and serious pieces were both excellently received with the Year 7s’ efforts not looking out of place alongside the work of older, more experienced pupils. Year 8 pupils who had focused on a range of genres this term performed their own devised drama pieces, ranging from horrors utilising creepy lighting and sound, to docudramas featuring stern, focused news anchors. These performances were punctuated by some excellent Year 9 monologues, featuring characters that had been developed throughout the year. The Year 9s who performed certainly showed the Year 7s and 8s what they can be expected to accomplish if they continue to work hard. The week was crowned by a performance by our GSCE drama group who created a moving still image performance using and inspired by the poem ‘Dulce Et Decorum Est”, highlighting the futility of violence and war.

FLEXUS On Friday 2nd July the dance department’s annual workshop with Flexus Dance Company once again left us all feeling inspired. Our GCSE dance pupils had the pleasure of watching the youth company perform before learning some of their choreography and being creatively challenged. Reagan Sargent (10W1) said: ”It was great to have the opportunity to work with different people and to watch how hard they work”. Well done to all those who took part in the workshop and worked so hard.

After weeks of preparation for The Ryman National Enterprise Competition the day finally arrived. Year 9 Enterprise team travelled to Doncaster Racecourse for the big day to present their pitch for their business idea – REVIC: a revision app that allowed more access to music once the revision had been completed. On arrival they were given welcome packs which included free stationery and chocolate. They were called to the elevator to go to the next floor to get ready to pitch. Nerves were setting in but the team controlled these and they had time to practise their pitch in a hospitality box at the racecourse until finally they were called to pitch. The team gathered themselves and took a deep breath and went in to pitch. They had 5 minutes only to pitch to a panel of judges. They were excellent ambassadors for Barr Beacon School and in style delivered their pitch. Their words were “that went well” on exiting the room. After a few photographs the team then went to explore the exhibition stands, zorbs and speak to other pupils that were pitching. After all the pitches were completed lunch was served and we were ushered into a huge room with a stage lit for special guests. The team enjoyed comedy from Dick and Dom from CBBC and an engaging motivational speech from Eddie the Eagle. In addition to this the event sponsor, Dragon’s Den’s Theo Paphitis, conducted a question and answer questions on how he ensures success in business. Unfortunately the team didn’t make the last 8 teams to pitch to Theo Paphitis but we awere able to watch the presentations and encourage others to do well. The team were amazing and a credit to the school.

YEAR 9 ENTERPRISE DAY

Year 12 students visited RAF Brize Norton on Tuesday 21st June. Olivia Thomas (12B1), Deputy Head Girl has written a few words about her experience.

“During the visit we learned that the RAF has a wide range of occupations. The opportunities that the RAF provides to our great nation is absolutely endless: pilots, logistics, dog handlers, personal trainers, medics, lawyers and chefs are but a few careers off a vast list of 58. Whilst exploring the ten mile radius base, we all absorbed some very intriguing information.

“We learned how accepting the RAF was of all abilities of people. On the one hand, you are allowed to join straight from GCSEs. Whilst, on the other hand, you can access a higher role with 2 A-levels. They can even fund you through university! Many jobs, in fact, can pay £28,000 straight from training. This is an annual wage that only a few young people receive. Therefore if you are a fit, determined and enthusiastic person who would work well in active teams, the RAF may be a career you could consider. We were immensely grateful for Brize Norton’s kind hospitality, viewing its magnificent planes, allowing us to play on their exercise equipment and informing us of the bountiful life that can result from joining the RAF.”

For the past three weeks, Year 9 pupils have been taking part in this year’s Science Fair.  This involved pupils working in groups to carry out some background research on a chosen topic, designing a scientific investigation that was relevant to their chosen area and then carrying this out practically.  Pupils concluded their findings and put their work into a display board format which was then presented to class peers.  The winners of each class were then selected to display their fantastic projects in the iCentre and the overall winners were judged by members of the leadership team.

The winners (pictured below, top right) were Amrita Hayer (9C2), Aneesah Ijaz (9W2) and Simrit Chahal (9C2) for their work looking at Daphnia’s response to different coloured light.

Runners-up (pictured below, bottom right) were Jake Brookes from 9B1, Scott Reid (9B1) and Jack Carter (9M1) for their work looking at how the spin in a ball effects the curve of it. Well done to all who took part in the Science Fair.  Some fantastic display work was produced for pupils to view throughout the day in the iCentre.

Science Fair

As an RE department we are extremely proud of the Holy Building Projects our pupils have completed this half-term. Every pupil produced something different and it was fantastic to see a range of Holy Buildings being produced. The level of detail included in each and every project not only demonstrated what pupils have been learning about within lessons but it was clear to see that pupils had all completed wider reading and research. This year our students have gone above and beyond expectations.

We have had buildings made from wood, lolly pop sticks and Lego (just to name a few) and some buildings even had their own lights built into the design. It was a very hard decision to choose a final four however, the final four are as follows; 1st place Arun Dubb (7C1), 2nd place Hollie Green (7W1), 3rd place Harvey Lawrence (7W2) and 4th place Jack Latham (7M2). The winning project from Arun Dubb was not only outstanding visually but the message behind the project sums up the ethos of the RE department at Barr Beacon School which is centred upon educating young people about religion so that they can learn from it and  appreciate how people of different walks of life can live peacefully side by side. Arun decided to create a building which would be open to everybody for worship regardless of religion and it was truly wonderful.

STAY SAFE THIS SUMMER | GAMING PARENTAL TIPS

Pokémon Go is a game where you collect and trade cute creatures called Pokémon (Pocket Monsters).

It's one of the first popular games to use "augmented reality" - a kind of cross between real life and an online world. The game makes it look like Pokémon appear in real life places by using the GPS and camera on your phone.

Below are a few tips from the NSPCC about what you need to know about the game and how you can help keep children using the app safe.

The RisksThere are loads of good things about the game; there's a reason it's become so popular. But it's important to learn the risks involved:

Meeting people you don't know face-to-face. The game is designed to bring people together. Usually strangers. So you never know who you might meet.

There's a physical risk It's easy to forget to look where you're going with this game, but you need to be careful of where you end up. There are already stories of people being ‘lured’ to places that aren't safe for children.

It can cost a lot of money There are in-app purchases and other incentives which can cost up to £79.99 (14,500 Pokécoins). Make sure the app's set up without payment options.

Access to personal data Pokémon Go asks for personal information like your birth date and email address, which you're asked to enter or receive through social media accounts. Parents have the right to contact the creators to stop them from using their personal information.

Top Tips

Explore Together. With younger children, you might want to play the game together, and explore how it works. Older children may want to play alone but it's important to let them know the risks.

Set Rules.Take a battery pack. The game drains phone battery and this will avoid them getting lost without a phone.

Stay with friends.Watch out for others - people can get competitive!Establish where they'll be playing.

To avoid unexpected bills, check that your child's app permissions are set correctly.

PROM 2016Friday 1st July saw a mix of rain and shine on the beautiful grounds of Hogarth’s Hotel where staff eagerly awaited the arrival of our Year 11 Prom guests. This year bought a range of fast cars and jam-packed limos filled with excited and accomplished young people. We even had a helicopter and the Ghostbusters made a special appearance. Students spent the evening snapping photos in the photo booth, testing their balance on the bucking bronco, pleasing their sweet teeth at the chocolate fountain and even getting a self portrait drawn by our very talented caricaturist.

Once the sun had gone down, our Prom King and Queen had the duty of starting off the firework displaying that then led into a party to end all parties with our DJ. A great night was had by all and it will certainly be one to remember.

‘JUDO STAR’

LEADERS OFTHE FUTURE

“On Saturday 25th June, I took part in the Kent international BJA Judo competition. It was a very tough tournament with over 700 competitors from all over Europe. In my weight category, under 40kg, there were 8 girls. I had a few hard fights but I managed to get a bronze medal! I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I am looking forward to try to get a gold medal next year!” Holly Payton (7B1)

LEADERS OFTHE FUTURE

‘COURTING SUCCESS’

Passion is everything when you’re a leader. If you don’t care then neither will the people who follow you.

Samantha Tsvamuno (7C1) clearly has passion: she has been playing tennis since the age of 4. “I just picked up

a racket and fell in love with the sport,” she says. “My dad got me into it,” she says. “He was inspired by the

Williams sisters and they inspire me too.” On Wednesday 15th June she represented the Midlands branch of the

Lawn Tennis Association at a special event at Edgbaston Priory. Samantha was one of only 8 players across the

whole of the Midlands to be selected.

Samantha fuels her passion by going to see the professionals play as well.

“I’ve seen Nadal, Sharapova and Federer play at Wimbledon.” However, it’s her

own determined practice with a racket which has ensured her own success:

“I’m being invited to tournaments in Europe now”.

A huge congratulations to Ben Saunders (10M1) who has managed to meet the Under 17 mens English Schools qualification standard for High Jump by jumping 1.92m. His ranking in the UK has moved to 7th which is amazing and a huge achievement at 15 and in the first year of Under 17. He has also been selected to take part in the English schools’ competition for a second year! Congratulations Ben!

“PREFECT PROUD”

Olivia-Ann Saxton (10W1) is a fantastic role model for other students in school. She finds the perfect balance of studying and time for her which ensures that she is always achieving top grades in her subjects. Olivia is an extremely caring young lady and always finds time to support her friends however she can. She is always happy to offer them advice and acts responsibly if there are ever issues. Due to her overall positive attitude and good will she has been made a Wrekin Prefect, it is a role that she has taken to effortlessly and I am sure that she will fulfil the role in every aspect of her school life. We have no doubt that Olivia will be a leader of the future both here at Barr Beacon and beyond.

YEAR 13LEAVERS EVENT

Year 13 partied into the night at their Leavers’ event at the Holiday Garden Inn in Birmingham.  All dressed to impress, with many wearing glamorous cocktail dresses and smart suits.  The mirror photo booth was a great success and all enjoyed the three course meal.  Dancing continued to midnight and then most of Year 13 continued their partying at other venues.  The event was organised by the Senior Four, where they researched suitable venues in Birmingham, completed a questionnaire of all Year 13 students  and then planned and coordinated the event with staff from the hotel. “It was a great evening, enjoyed by all, including the staff.  The Senior Four deserve credit for organising such a lovely evening. ” Mrs Harper

This poster attracted the attention of Haringey Council who nowuse it (with our permission) in their healthly lifestyles report

On Friday 1st July the whole of Year 7 took part in a ‘Healthy Lifestyles’ day. The aim of the day was to raise awareness of some of the current lifestyle and diet issues, and develop skills to help in making healthier choices. There were 5 different sessions going on throughout the day:

• Quorn demonstration – Home economists from Quorn came in and cooked a range of tasty and nutritious meals to show pupils some interesting ways of using meat alternatives and explained the health benefits of using Quorn. There was also a fantastic tasting session at the end!

• Free Sugars – A range of activities looking at hidden sugars in popular foods and drinks. Pupils made a ‘sugar pledge’ at the end of the session.

• What’s on your plate? – Pupils used the ‘Explore Food’ website to analyse the nutritional value of packed lunches and design their own healthy meals.

• Taking the right steps – Pupils looked at the calorie content of some of their favourite snacks and calculated how many steps would be needed to burn off those calories. They then tried to complete enough steps using pedometers to count them. Some pupils had a very long way to walk!

• Daily Fitness – The PE staff led a fun fitness session, showing pupils some quick and easy daily exercises that they could complete at home.

Overall the day was very successful, with pupils saying how much they had enjoyed their activities.

Students are celebrating after winning a Young Photographer competition run by Rotary International. The competition was entered by over a thousand school and college students. Barr Beacon as a whole won a prize for ‘College Portfolio’ and two Year 10 pupils secured both of the top prizes in the Black and White category.

The final of the competition took place at Denstone College in Uttoxeter on 28th June.

Bonita-Lynn Phillips (10B1) won first prize in the Black & White category for her piece which was inspired by her work on the school’s anti-bullying committee. “I wanted to express that although everyone hides their emotions to a certain extent, everyone has something unique: their eyes. That’s why this is the only visible part of the face in my image.”

For his second prize-winning entry, Scott Robinson (10W1) was inspired by looking into mental health, which has been another whole school focus this year: “Many people view depression as a black dog, so I played around with the ideas of light and dark in my photograph. Life is a mixture of light and dark and this is what I wanted to capture.”

Miss Watson, their teacher, said: “Our pupils have worked extremely hard to capture their intended images and edit them in their own unique way. I was extremely proud with the outcome and their pictures were produced with precise skill, imagination and raw talent.”

Roger Whittaker, the coordinator of the competition, said: “This is the sixth year that Rotary have been organising the Young Photographer Competition.” He praised the photographers for the “miscellany of subjects all taken to a very high standard.”

During Earth Week pupils had a very exciting and hands on visit from the Animal Man. Pupils had the opportunity to learn about (and meet) different animals from around the world including a Chilean Rose Tarantula, two Boa Constrictors and two baby Silver Foxes! They also learnt about the characteristics, dietary requirements and habitats of the animals.

We look forward to welcoming the Animal Man again during Activities week!

Year 9 pupils have created some beautiful dresses for the ‘Dress A Girl Around The World’, campaign which aims to provide young girls in poverty with a special dress for them to wear, increasing their confidence!

Well done, it is great to see pupils are helping those who are less fortunate whilst also making use of spare fabric in Textiles!

Well done to Junaid Khan in 9M2 who has an Eco-Uniform blazer! Eco-Uniforms are produced using polyester made from recycled plastic bottles that would otherwise end up in landfill, in rivers as waste or as litter on the streets, and the polyester production process uses less energy than polyester made from crude oil. Look out for the Eco-Uniforms when you are shopping for your uniform!

ARE YOU RECYCLING CORRECTLY? Don’t forget… in every classroom there is a recycling bin. You can put paper, card, empty plastic bottles and cans in here. You should put all other waste in the normal bin.

ECO EDUCATION

Thank you very much to Mr Lawrence from local company, Selecta Systems, who kindly donated solar powered torches and calculators to pupils in Year 7 and 8. Pupils were very excited to use the torches and many were charging them in the sun at the back of the classrooms!

Sports Day 2016

It may have been stiflingly hot outside but that didn’t stop the athletes putting in determined performances on both the track and field. Going into the

competition, Wrekin had the most participation points but Bredon’s fiercely competitive spirit ensured another victory for the blue House.

However, it was the Clent who secured the trophy for House Competitions across the

whole year, leaving everyone else green with envy. At the beginning of the day it was Malvern with a narrow lead, but the Sports Day points pushed Clent past the finish line into first place. Well done to everyone who took part in Sports Day and House Competitions throughout

the year.

BREDON

What a fantastic year it has been for Bredon House. Our pupils have involved themselves fully in house competitions and we are certainly in contention to reclaim our trophy. Here are some of our highlights from the final half term.

Attendance and PunctualityWhat an amazing year it has been for Attendance and Punctuality in Bredon House. We currently have the second highest attendance in the school with 97.76%. We also have the largest number of pupils with 100% attendance for this academic year: an incredible 62! Well done Bredon House! This is a great position for us to be in and bodes well for the new term in September! Furthermore, we have also claimed top prize for our punctuality record. This is a brilliant improvement from last year. Well done all!

There have been some great individual success stories throughout the year and many pupils have received praise postcards in recognition of this. However, the overall form with the best attendance is 7B1 who achieved an amazing 97.94%. 7B1 also had the best punctuality record in the house with 19 late marks. Can you hold on to your trophies again next year?

Head PrefectsI was extremely proud to announce the newly elected Bredon prefects in my last newsletter. Further to this exciting news, I am proud to say that Sunil Mistry (10B1) has been elected as a Senior Prefect. I am sure that you will excel in this prestigious role. A further congratulations goes out to Mia Rae Brown (10B1) who has been selected to be a Deputy Senior Prefect. I wish you both the very best in your new roles. You certainly deserve it!

Progress Mentor AppointmentsFurther successes were also celebrated with the appointment of five Progress Mentors from our Year 10 cohort. I would like to thank every pupil who applied for the role. It was a very difficult decision to make, which is testament to the fantastic pupils that we have in Bredon house. I am truly looking forward to working with our amazing team. The Progress Mentos are Shania Patel (10B2), Chloe Hetherington (10B3), Zahra Khan (10B2), Jack Davey (10B3), Charlie Bland (10B2).

AssembliesI would like to say a big thank you to 9B2 for their outstanding assembly about activities to participate in during the summer holidays. The pupils were very confident when presenting their ideas and the information they provided us with was truly fantastic.

Dancing Star - Zoe Lo 8B2On the 24th June, I travelled to Blackpool to dance in a competition called ‘The Worlds’. For the fast freestyle dance I reached the semi-finals! It was an incredibly hard competition as I was competing against countries from all around the world. On the 3rd July, I went to Stafford Leisure Centre for another dance competition. In the slow freestyle category I came in 2nd place!

Head Teacher AwardThe following pupils have consistently worked hard this year and have now achieved their Headteachers Award. Well done all! This is an outstanding achievement. Jack Mander (7B1), Ajai Aujla (7B1), Emilie Walters (7B1), Ajai Aujla (7B1).

And finally

I hope you have a relaxing Summer Holiday and I look forward to seeing you all on the first day back.

MALVERN

We have had a brilliant term for Malvern and although the weather hasn’t been the best it hasn’t dampened our spirits. We have had brilliant participation in House events and excellent camaraderie during the Sports Day heats. Whatever happens regarding the trophies we are all winners. We still have 48 pupils in the House who have 100% attendance this is a fantastic achievement, not one day off all year, so well done to those individuals. 7M1 have continued with their fantastic attendance and are still at the top of the leader board with a form attendance of 98.27. A very big well done 7M1!

I wanted to say a big thank you to the Prefects for all of their support with the Year 6 induction evening and day you were very helpful and made sure all pupils enjoyed their day. We have now selected our Malvern Progress Mentors who will be a vital part of the Malvern team in supporting a variety of pupils in September. A big congratulations to our 2016-17 Progress Mentors; Rebecca Coates (10M2), Akira Blake-Waldo (10M1), Bailie Sowambur (10M1), Max Rowlands (10M1) and Georgia Jordan-Farmer (10M1). You will be invaluable in September. Well done all.

With our sports day heats came a key role for our Malvern sports ambassadors: Ben Saunders (10M1), Harvey Moran (7M3), Oliver Dean (8M2), Owen Wyatt (9M2). Well done to all of you and the help you provided staff and pupils. You made us proud and showed exactly what Malvern pupils are about.

Oliver Dean (8M2) has recently visited the British Championships in Liverpool to compete in tumbling. Oliver trains very hard each week and shows a real dedication and determination to do well. This is the first time Oliver has made it to the British Championships and came 4th, which is a brilliant achievement. Well done Oliver, Malvern is extremely proud of you!

As always this half term a number of pupils have achieved Commendation Certificates:

Beth McGuigan (8M1), Thomas Manion (8M1), Ben Clougher (8M1), Hannah Cartwright (8M1), Shawn Hughes (8M1), Sophia Khan (8M1), Asad Kalang (8M1), Allahna Brittle (8M1), Ibrahim Soahail (8M1), Stuart Beebee (8M1), Jodie Reeves (8M1). Congratulations on achieving your Bronze Awards.

Hadeeqah Hussain (8M1), Naomi Fitzsimons (8M1), Abbey Oakley (8M1), Thomas Mills (8M1), Sherese Lewis (8M1), Ibrahim Soahail (8M1), Surina Sherghil (8M1), Hibbah Umar (8M1), Arjun Narwain (8M1), Reece D'Souza (8M2), Azaan Bashir (7M2), Brandon Giusa (8M2). Congratulations on achieving your Silver Award!

Tyler Wright (7M3), Taylor Bryant (7M2) , Victoria Murrin (9M1), Zainab Anwar (9M1), Charlie Palmer (7M2), Maisie Ford (7M2), Ryan Ford (7M2), Kira Clarke (7M2). Congratulations on achieving your Gold Award. Well done!

8M1 delivered an inspirational assembly on child labour which really opened a lot of pupils’ eyes to what other children their age have to go through day to day. A special well done to the form for being very confident and using the hall in a creative way to create the feeling we were all involved. The form created a great interactive assembly that we thoroughly enjoyed.

I would also like to mention 9M1 who did a very informative assembly on refugees and detailed some of the reasons why people would leave their homes and it gave us all time to reflect on how lucky we are and perhaps think about what we can do to help others who could be living in tough situations. You provided us with a lot of information and it really made us think.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working with all of you this year. You have all worked really hard and should be very proud of yourselves for everything you have achieved, as I am. I wish you all a fantastic summer break. Relax, enjoy yourselves and keep your fingers crossed for the sunshine.

WREKIN

Mr A GrocuttHead Of Wrekin

WOW…What a great year it has been for Wrekin House. Pupils have gone above and beyond to involve themselves in everything that has been on offer to them. Here are some of our best bits from the final half term…

Attendance and PunctualityWrekin have had a great end to the year in terms of punctuality and attendance. Since March, Wrekin have climbed all the way to the top of the pile in terms of overall House attendance with an amazing 96.84% so a huge well done to everyone for making that possible. Unfortunaltely we were just pipped to the top spot of 100% attendees this year but still a great effort with 53 students having not had a single day off during this academic year.

There has been some great news in the House also which has been recognised with praise postcards and commendations including 7W1, 9W1 and 10W1 holding the top spots for attendance in their year groups which is AMAZING! It has given us a real platform for next year to really push to be number one across the board.

Head Prefects It was my honour to announce the new Wrekin prefects in the last newsletter but a massive congratulations must go to Jonathan Hunt (10W1) who was chosen as a Deputy Senior Prefect which is a great privilege for him and a role that I know he deserves and will complete with great pride. I wish him and the Prefects luck in their new roles.

Progress Mentor AppointmentsThis term has also seen our newly elected Progress Mentors who were put through their paces with some intense training. I am sure that they will do a fantastic job and be a real credit to Wrekin house. I look forward to the help, support and guidance that they will give to our younger students.

The Wrekin Progress Mentors are Blake Lewis (10W1), Lydia Guisa (10W1), Sophie Day (10W1), Hannah Bates (10W3) and Charlotte Fearon (10W3).

AssembliesI would like to say a big thank you to 7W1 for their outstanding assembly about staying safe in the sun. Their informative and theatrical assembly really had everyone engaged and it was a great message that they gave to Wrekin house.

Sporting SuccessWell done to all those Wrekin students who were nominated at the school PE and Dance Awards Evening. Watching each of them come up for their nomination or award filled me with a lot of pride so a massive congratulations goes to them.

Headteacher AwardsAliyah Begum (8W2), Mia Jackson (7W2) and Jack Bullock (7W1) have worked really hard this year and have managed to achieve their Headteacher’s Award. Well done all! This is an AMAZING achievement.

FinallyI hope that you and your loved ones have a great summer holiday and take your deserved rest. I look forward to seeing you all fully recharged for the new academic year.
