connection with authority over the works. A suitable
contact regarding any concerns is Mid Coast Coun-

A SMILING K-2
It has been a busy term and despite the adversities
we have all had to overcome, with home learning
and restrictions being placed upon us, we have all
come out the other end smiling.
It has been a productive term, with English and
maths lessons back in full swing, children are read-
ing new books and learning new mathematical
concepts. Kindergarten have loved reading Stella
Luna and Possum Magic and Stage One have
been indulging in books by Julia Donaldson and
Mem Fox.
Moving forward, next term our assemblies will con-
tinue to remain the same in our classroom and we
will resume music lessons with Matty Zarb and
Scripture will also recommence.
Have a safe and happy holiday.

DIGITAL RESOURCES
FOR SCHOOL AND HOME
For this edition of our newsletter, we have includ-
ed two helpful links of digital resources for our par-
ents/carers.
Our first is the State Library NSW History and Ge-
ography site where there is some great learning
experiences and fun ideas for history and geogra-
phy for students.
Secondly we include a Mindfulness Toolkit series
for students which takes a good look at the parts
of the brain that relate to mindfulness and practice
mindful techniques that help us to feel happier,
reflective and more productive.
There is also an article on page 7 with some
handy mindfulness tips for everyone.

SCHOOL BANKING
School banking has not been occurring whilst the
COVID 19 restrictions have been in place. It has
been decided that it will not resume once the re-
strictions have eased. We apologise for the cessa-
tion of this service.
ONLINE LEARNING IN 6B
6B are flying far and wide with their learning as they
find out about our world using Google Earth. In our
classroom, students have used Google Earth Voy-
ager to explore strange and unusual animals and
identify them by listening to the sounds that they
make. They have also used Google Earth to locate
cities across the globe and explore points of inter-
est in faraway places. 6B are discovering new, fun
and exciting ways of using digital technologies to
improve their geographical skills.

Kiss and Ride Zones are designed for your con-
venience and for your child’s safety. Designed for
quick entry and exit, these zones minimise con-
gestion and risk when used properly by all parents
and carers. These zones operate under the same
conditions as no parking zones, which means you
may stop to drop off or pick up children for a maxi-
mum of 2 minutes. You're required to remain in, or
within 3 metres of, your vehicle. Days and hours of
operation may apply to some zones.
To find out more information about the available
Kiss and Ride zones in your area, please contact
MidCoast Council Kiss & Ride Zones

LABELLING OF CLOTHING
We urge all parents/carers to please label all of their children’s clothing. Although we are in these cooler
months, many students are taking off their jumpers while in the playground running around. If these jump-
ers are later found, they can be returned to their rightful owner if they have the students name on them.
We would also like to remind parents/carers to please label their child’s hat.
Pictured below are students enjoying the sunshine in the playground on the outdoor court and playing
cricket.
MENTAL HEALTH & MINDFULNESS Smiling Mind is having a mindful month in June. Mindfulness can help us reduce worries, anxiety and
distress, create a sense of calm, learn how to relax and regulate emotions, improve concentration
and increased productivity and enjoy better health and sleep.
Mental health and wellbeing is important as it underpins the way children feel about themselves, how
they think, learn, and relate to others. With good mental health, research shows children are happier,
more confident, more resilient learners and able to build positive relationships. Good mental health in
childhood sets young people up for positive mental health in the future. Mindfulness is a state of being
fully awake to life; being aware and undistracted in the present moment and observing life as it un-
folds without analysis or judgement. It is about focusing attention on the here and now, rather than
thinking about the past or worrying about the future.
Practising mindfulness strengthens the minds' ability to focus, pay attention and reduce worry — the
more we practise, the stronger the mind becomes. Therefore, mindfulness is like gym for the mind.
HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT YOUR CHILD AT HOME
Mindful eating: Think about how your family eats their meals - is everyone all over the place or
do you sit down and enjoy a meal together? — Try and use meal time to savour your food,
speak to each other and be present without any unnecessary distractions.
Mindful awareness: Spend time inside your house or in the garden and take some time to simply
pay attention to what you can see, hear and smell. — It’s amazing how often we go about our
day without noticing what’s right in front of us.
Mindful communication: Try and practice mindful communication by being aware when you are
distracted and not paying attention, and bring your attention back. — Try and remind yourself
to stop multitasking and simply pay attention when you’re speaking to one another - really try
and focus on what is being said and see if you can listen without thinking of other things - its
hard, but worth it!
You can access more information at smilingmind.com.au.
The mindfulness app is free and available through the App Store or Google Play and can be down-
loaded on your phone, iPad or computer for your personal use.

A good way to explain mindfulness to those unfamiliar with the practice
is to compare mindfulness with physical exercise.

STUDENT ABSENCES
At Chatham Public School, student attendance
and safety is a high priority. We know that stu-
dents who attend regularly are more likely to be
successful at school.
If your child is absent on any school day, a parent/
carer will receive a SMS. The message will appear
on the phone displaying “0417 983 775”. Parents/
Carers should store this number as Chatham Pub-
lic School so that when a message arrives, they
are aware the message is from the school.
It is very important that parents/carers reply to
this message with the following information:
• Student’s Name
• Date of Absence
• Reason of Absence
Other ways of letting the school know of their
child’s absence are:
• Note to the class teacher or school office
• Phone call to the school office
If you know in advance that your child will be ab-
sent, the school expects that the parent/carer will
inform the school beforehand.
If you have any concerns regarding this, please
contact the school office on 6551 1081.

HEADLICE
Head Lice are extremely contagious. Early treat-
ment is recommended to kill head lice and their
eggs and to limit school and family contamination.
95% of lice are transmitted through close head to
head contact and by sharing objects such as hats,
hair brushes, head bands , pillows and towels.
Ensure that you and your household are protected
from head lice by taking the necessary preventa-
tive steps to keep head lice away.
Below are 4 crucial steps to keep head lice free;
• Avoid sharing clothing, especially hats. Rib-
bons, head bands and helmets.
• Discourage children from playing with each
other’s hair.
• Don’t share brushes, combs, towels and pil-
lows.
• Keep long hair plaited or firmly tied back to
prevent contact from other kids.
These tips will help limit the outbreak of head lice
at our school.
