Newsletter No. 29 8 th September, 2015 In This Issue: Open Night: ‘Long Ago and Yesterday’ Staffing Student Safety Prep-2 Athletics Sports Fathers’ Day Stall & Breakfast Reminders Dear Parents, The undoubted highlight of this week will be Open Night on Thursday evening from 6.00pm - 8.30pm. The evening will commence in the hall with performances from the senior and years 3 & 4 choirs, the drum band, a rhythmic gymnastics display and a performance by the Senior Strings. From 6.45pm there will be static displays and activities involving the students in each of the learning communities. The program detailing these activities has already been posted on the Skoolbag app and will be sent home as a hard copy to each eldest child on Wednesday. This year the focus of the students’ inquiry has been the history of Australia and we have called our inquiry unit ‘Long Ago and Yesterday’. As you journey through the learning communities I encourage you to look at the learning that has taken place. The inquiry process develops students’ knowledge and ability to question, interpret, research, collaborate and present their understandings in a variety of ways. It is important to emphasise that their finished product is secondary to the development of these skills. I am sure as you visit each learning community you will enjoy looking at the work and performances by our students. Throughout the evening there will be a Book Fair in the room adjacent to the library so if you want, you will be able to purchase a book for your children. The Good Food Shop will be open from 5.30pm and will be selling sushi, party pies, beef pies, roast vegetable and chicken pies, choc tops, muffins, fruit tubes and drinks. This should help families who do not have time to have dinner at home prior to coming to school. Staffing Mrs Lauren Cummings will be returning to work next Monday following a period of family leave. if your children access such social media sites, [and in most cases to do so the minimum age is thirteen], they do so in the family room, kitchen or other places where you can supervise them; and to regularly check the security / privacy settings on all devices used by children. Experts recommend that the use by young children of chat rooms, email etc. should not happen in children’s bedrooms where they cannot properly be supervised. It is natural that children will be curious and we need to make sure that they are using safe sites when online. Prep- 2 Athletics Sports The children in Prep-2 participated in their inter-house athletics sports on Friday. They all had lots of fun and performed enthusiastically and to the best of their ability. It was fantastic to see them dressed in their house colours and competing so well. Congratulations to the house captains, who urged, supported and coached their teams. Fathers’ Day Stall and Breakfast Thank you to Carolyn Fern and her team of parent helpers (Sarah Castle, Jehanne Lielnors, Bernie Renggli, Anna Glenn, Natalie Lode, Meta Holdgate, Melissa Wong, Maria Xu, Kayt McDonald, Nat Howell and the other mums who lent a helping hand) who purchased, set up, sold and cleaned up after the Fathers’ Day stall on Thursday morning. The ladies involved in events such as this really do a fabulous job with a minimum of fuss and they certainly deserve our praise. The children enjoyed selecting an item for their father and most did so with a lot of thought and care. I hope all our dads had a great Fathers’ Day. The Prep students held a Fathers’ Day breakfast for their dads on Friday before school and it was fabulous to see so many dads attending. They enjoyed a yummy breakfast of pancakes and the children very proudly showed them their learning community and school work. Thanks to the Prep teachers and the mums who organised the breakfast. PE UPDATE Glen Iris District Athletics Carnival – Wednesday 9th September Best of luck to our 95 athletes who will compete at the District Aths Carnival this Wednesday at Bill Sewart Athletics Track in East Burwood. We have a very strong team who have been training hard this past week. The carnival will be a great opportunity to test ourselves on the track and field. Congratulations to our Athletics Captains for 2015. Marcus D and Rebecca W are our Track Captains and Cassidy R and Marcus W are our Captains of the field team. Well done to these athletes. Thank you to Brad Boag for his relay training throughout the week. Athletes please remember to meet in the gym at 8.45am on Wednesday morning. Go Hartwell!

Athletics Training Session Thank you to those students who came along to Angela Phillips’ training session last Friday. Angela will continue to run her coaching sessions in Term 4 on Thursday morning before school and now on Friday after school. Please contact Angela directly to enrol: 0402143669.

Prep-Year 2 Tabloid Athletics Day In glorious sunshine, the Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students had a fantastic Tabloid Aths day last Friday. With a focus on having a go and doing your best, there was much laughter and plenty of

Page 3: HARTWELL PRIMARY SCHOOL 4055 Milverton Street, Camberwell ... · helpers (Sarah Castle, Jehanne Lielnors, Bernie Renggli, Anna Glenn, Natalie Lode, Meta Holdgate, Melissa Wong, Maria

smiles as athletes rotated through eight different modified athletic events. I am very pleased to say our athletics team looks very strong for many years to come after the performances of last week! Thank you to class teachers for their support and organisation of students before the event. Congratulations to the Year 6 House Captains on their outstanding effort in running the events throughout the day. It was a full day of coaching and mentoring for them and they did a magnificent job. Thank you to: Niv, Hayden, Hugh, Jack, Rebecca, Brianna, Zac, Alex, Grace M, Kathy, Roy, Riley, Lucy, Sophie, Lyla, Grace G and Gen. It was lovely to see many parents, siblings and grandparents come to support the event.

Senior Hoop Time Another brilliant Hoop Time Day was enjoyed by Year 5 & 6 students in our Future Stars and Rookie teams last Tuesday at Nunawading Basketball Stadium. We had five teams playing which highlights the terrific sport participation rate we have at Hartwell. As teams consist of players of varying experience, it is always impressive to observe the co-operative and collaborative skills, along with the inclusiveness and sportsmanship that our players demonstrate to ensure every team becomes a very tight unit very quickly. Each team played four pool matches before finals. Well done to the Hawks and the Hornets who both made it to the semi-finals. However with a focus on developing our basketball skills and working as a team, every team improved throughout the day whilst individuals grew in confidence and self-esteem. Thank you to our coaches for sharing their extensive basketball knowledge and for covering more than one team: Mr. Maloney (Yr 5), Scott Taylor (Romy’s dad) and once again, the ever dependable Nick Holdsworth (CA). Thanks to the parents who scored for us and those who came to cheer us on. It really was a fantastic day.

Have a great week. Jo Bayes PE Teacher & Sport Co-ordinator
