Harrow International School Bangkok CEEB Code 695518 Head Master: Michael Farley School Profile 2017/2018 Harrow International School Bangkok is a member of the Federation of British International Schools in South East and East Asia (FOBISSEA) and is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) Amanda Poel, Head of Careers and University Guidance Harrow International School Bangkok is one of a family of six schools: Harrow School (London), the John Lyon School (London) and the Harrow International Schools (Bangkok, Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai). Links between the schools are strong, as demonstrated by our shared Board of Governors and staff movement within the group. Harrow International School, Bangkok was founded in 1998 and is a co-educational day and boarding school located in suburban Bangkok, providing an independent boarding school experience in an Asian context. The school currently has 1538 students on roll from Pre Nursery to Year 13, with 114 students in the graduating class (Year 13) and 13 students in the junior graduating class (Year 12). The Students Harrow International School has a student body with a diverse mix of nationalities. 77% of our students are of Thai nationality, 8% are British, 3% from other European countries such as the Netherlands, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy and Sweden. 2% of our students are from New Zealand or Australia with a further 2% who are American or Canadian. 3% of our student population are Chinese, 1% are Japanese and 1% are Korean with the remaining students from other countries such as Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Nepal, Singapore, Israel, Indonesia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Colombia, Egypt, Laos, Taiwan, Turkey and Vietnam. The Curriculum The Secondary curriculum closely follows the National Curriculum of England & Wales: in Year 9 (ages 13-14) students study a broad range of subjects across the Science, Maths, English, Art and Humanities faculties. On completion of the British National Curriculum at age 14 students study the following qualifications: IGCSE Level (International General Certificate in Secondary Education) IGCSE is taught to students between the ages of 14-16 (known as Key Stage 4). Students choose a range of subjects from those taught in Key Stage 3, whilst continuing to study English, Mathematics and Science. At the end of Year 11 (age 16) students sit for external IGCSE examinations. At IGCSE level, all students study the core subjects of English and Mathematics and then take further subjects from the choice of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Thai, Mandarin, French, Japanese, Art, History, Business Studies, Economics, English Literature, Music, Geography, Computer Science, Information and Communication Technology, Drama and PE. Our most able students have the opportunity to take additional courses of more independent study including Classical Studies, Development Studies and Astronomy. AS and A2 Levels (Advanced Levels) In Key Stage 5 (Sixth Form) students (ages 16-18) study towards A Levels. Students can study up to AS Level and receive credit for this or continue into Year 13 to complete full A Levels. Students normally study four AS Levels and sit external AS examinations at the end of Year 12 (junior graduating class). The majority of our students continue on to study 3 A2 Levels in Year 13 (senior graduating class). There is no compulsory community service component in the A Level programme, but many students choose to work towards achieving the Harrow Prize (accredited by Edexcel Examination Board, UK) which includes communication, cultural, physical activities, skills and community service components. In addition, a growing number of students undertake the Extended Project Qualification to study areas of academic interest in more depth. Reporting We do not provide rankings; however, after Year 11 IGCSE results are available. For Year 13 students external AS-Level exams will have been taken, and predictions of their final A2 results are available from the school. Students are encouraged to develop leadership skills and empathy through active involvement in charity and local community service activities at weekends and school holidays. There are numerous projects in progress, examples include Habitat for Humanity and Thai Fair Trade, and many of these are student led.
