This ebook outlines 'HBuild', the re-development of the Harrow BangkokCampus across a five year period of strategic development - in twophases - from 2013 to 2018. We've provided presentations, consultationand information sessions to our School's community. The details thatfollow complement these sessions, explaining the concepts, objectives, designs and time frame of HBuild. We will continue to update the ebookto keep you informed.

Harrow Bangkok has occupied its current green, 35 acre, lake side gardencampus for 12 years. The School has established a reputation foroutstanding academic results, strong 'pastoral' (welfare) support for allstudents and a rich, varied and ambitious 'Leadership in Action’Programme that allows our children to develop their leadershipattributes so as to be best prepared to be tomorrow’s 'leaders for abetter world'. We are a success story, with 1,450 students thriving in ourday and boarding school and our graduations transferring to the bestuniversities around the world.

Related to the next phase of our School’s journey, our educational andpastoral programmes are being continuously improved, as are ourfacilities. HBuild ensures that we have the necessary teaching, recreational and boarding amenities to provide for an outstanding, 21stcentury appropriate education in the vibrant context of Bangkok,Thailand; all members of our community will benefit from theimprovements.

In 1998 one of Britain’s most prestigious schools,Harrow-on-the-Hill – London – gave permission toopen Harrow International School Bangkok and ourSchool was founded. In 2003 Harrow Bangkokmoved to our current green and spacious campus atDon Muang, where a high quality British day andboarding school education is provided to aninternational group of students aged from 18months to 18 years.

In the early years an ambitious 'House system' wasintroduced, boarding provision developed, extra-curricular activities were expanded as the'Leadership in Action' Programme andPreparatory (Prep) and Pre Prep Schools were built.Over the years, Harrow Bangkok has built a strongreputation for traditional standards, educationalinnovation and excellence.

Our curriculum is broad and balanced, ensuring thatthe children have the necessary essential andtransferable learner skills to be successful in thedemanding 21st Century global community. We aimto support these educational programmes bycontinually improving our facilities to create astimulating, high quality and happy learningenvironment.

At Harrow Bangkok, students are guided, mentored and challenged toachieve the highest academic standards appropriate to their potential.

In addition they are encouraged to participate locally and internationally ina variety of service, sporting and creative opportunities and are immersedin extra-curricular activities structured according to six themes;

We believe this supports them to develop their six Leadership Attributes:

• Contributing positively to the community • Applying knowledge with compassion • Solving problems collaboratively • Solving problems creatively• Making just choices• Facing challenges with determination

As well as their core skills:

Transferable Learner SkillsCommunication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical thinking, Organisation, Independence and Resilience

Essential Learner SkillsSpeaking, Listening, Reading and Writing, Numeracy and Digital Literacy

We are embarking on an extensive site re-development programmethat will see the commissioning of new facilities and expansion andupgrade of several existing buildings. HBuild will include:

• A new and enlarged Sixth Form Centre

• Extension to our Early Years Centre

• Improved Creative Arts facilities (Art, Drama, Music & Library)

• The establishment of Design Technology at Harrow Bangkok

• Improved Sports and Lake amenities

• Improved and expanded Boarding

Our ethos is strongly influenced by boarding. Harrow-on-the-Hill has12 boarding houses and all the boys board, whether they originatefrom another continent or the bottom of the Hill. By expanding thecapacity of boarding in Bangkok, a larger proportion of our UpperSchool students will have the true 24/7 Harrow experience - perhapsas much as 50% will be boarding by 2018 - giving a moreinternational feel to the Campus and developing a real sense ofcommunity. Naturally, students will have a wide range ofopportunities to speak English outside of the classroom as it is thecommon language of the Campus.

Harrow Bangkok is the leader of boarding in Thailand due to its family feel andcommunity ethos. It is a place where both local and international students canenjoy a home from home. Already at full capacity for six years and with ever-increasing numbers of students waiting to board, the School has created twomore boarding houses to help meet demand.

The new Houses have bright spacious hotel type facilities and 'The Hub' boardingservice centre. Rooms range from single ensuites, to twin rooms and biggerrooms accommodating up to four students, allowing age and study requirementsto be taken into consideration. All the rooms have been designed by currentstaff and students to ensure they are fit for purpose.

There are small kitchenettes and common areas where students can relax andsocialise as well as work areas for revision and homework sessions.

A member of staff is located on each floor to care for the students on a 24 hourbasis. Student safety will be ensured by state-of-the-art technology which is usedfor entry to the boarding community along with guard personnel. Boarders areoffered the complete Harrow experience and given the freedom of extra time toparticipate in activities ranging from sport to community service as well ascommit to their academic studies, with increased access to tutors in eveningstudy sessions.

W h y E m p h a s i z e B o a r d i n g ?

Our ethos is strongly influenced by boarding; we believe thatthe level of engagement of the children with their schools isdramatically improved by boarding, due to the quality ofrelationships that result and the range of activities that areavailable to boarders. It is worth noting that last year’s HeadGirl and Head Boy were both boarders and this year theHead Girl boards.

You may not have realised that Harrow-on-the-Hill has 12boarding houses and all the boys board, whether theyoriginate from another continent or the bottom of the Hill.Harrow does boarding well!

By expanding the capacity of boarding in Bangkok, a largerproportion of our Upper School students will have the true24/7 Harrow experience - perhaps as much as 50% will beboarding by 2018 - giving a more international feel to theCampus and developing a real sense of community.Naturally, students will have a wide range of opportunities tospeak English outside of the classroom as it is the commonlanguage of the Campus.

The Hub (central services building) is close to boarding with its high quality catering, 24 hour medical centre and housekeeping area. The terrace overlooks the green sports fields and there’s also a second floor decking area for sporting spectators. Though this is a boarding facility, The Hub is also used as a venue for afternoon tea for students, open breakfast mornings for parents, and concerts, thus developing a strong sense of community.

We aim to minimise disruption to teaching and learning. The noisiest phases of the construction will beconducted during holiday periods. Much of the disruptive and noisy piling work in Phase 2 for the Centre ofPerforming Arts will be completed during school breaks, or after normal operating hours.

Additional piling works at the boarding house area will incur minimal disruption to the academic zone of thecampus and contractors will work to specific time schedules so as not to interfere with the regular school day.

The project management team will be in continual communication with the academic staff and classes will berelocated when necessary. Dust and air quality will also be monitored. Any deliveries of materials andmachinery will also be tightly controlled to specific times.

The construction site will be professionally hoarded and construction workers will access the siteonly during certain times or through a separate entrance.

Naturally, students will not be allowed to access the construction areas at any time.

Whilst we will attempt to complete the major piling and foundations work to the relevant areas of the Campus, the scale ofHBuild will necessitate some works continuing during the normal operating hours of the school term. This will befundamental in allowing us to achieve key milestones within the five year plan. As outlined above, however, we willminimise disruption to our normal educational programme while this work is being carried out.

The safety of our students, staff and parents is our first priority. The School will implement a number of procedures to ensurethat we are able to deal with the safeguarding and health and safety implications of HBuild. In accordance with UK safeguardingguidelines, the School has put procedures in place regarding suppliers and contractors who will be working on site.

All sections of the School where work is being undertaken will be completely fenced off for safety reasons and appropriatesignage placed. We will also keep students, parents and staff informed of progress so that you are aware of potential areas ofhazard. Our Facilities Team will direct students safely around any areas of risk. Where dust pollution is a possibility, the Schoolwill complete these works during the main school holidays.
